Car White smokes for a while wen started up

Can any one tell me y 1.9 tdi White smokes for about 3 minutes maybe longer wen ticking over

its at the back of the engine from memory its in the same housing as the thermostat is the car taking longer to warm up or not getting up to the 90c if so probley is this
