Lumpy tickover.

Hi , we have just bought a 2001 a4 tdi 130 sport saloon , its just done 119,000 miles , it has a couple of issues which i would like to sort before we take it to austria on holiday, firstly when it ticks over it sometimes shudders , this goes as soon as you increase the revs fractionally , The other fault is throttle response is better if you are carefull ie don't floor it, it pulls much harder with smaller throttle openings ? The car is perfect other than these two possibly related problems,any help would be greatly received.

The throttle sounds like an over fueling issue possibly? is there lots of black smoke when you use full throttle? possible intercooler gunked up too?

Not noticed any black smoke at all , looked under the bonnet today and noticed the egr valve is oily ? looks like a pair of 4mm holes are breathing , could this be part of the problem ?

Im no expert but the egr valve can cause issues! i believe you can clean it out with parrafin or something like! is it manual box?

Yes manual box, it seems to run well very smooth etc and it's doing 56mpg on local country roads, but it's better(faster) on part throttle , then occasionally its lumpy on tick over .
