How do you get the leather handbrake handle off?

I want to take off the leather handbrake handle so i can change it over to one of the S3 type ones but i have tugged and pulled at it and still cannot get it off the actual handbrake. how do i get it off?

There is a clip on the top of the rear side approximately 1cm from the rear end. Insert a slim screwdriver in the middle top trying to pull the handbrake out.
