The manual says every 80,000 miles, but I prefer to change the belts on any car ever 60,000 miles. I believe all VW engines are interference motors meaning if the timeing belt breaks or the cam belt breaks you can ruin your valves.
Another bit of advice, if you hear a knocking when pulling off after your cambelt change.... its your engine mounts that need changing.
It happened to me.
Spoken to a few mechanics now and it's not unusual that after the mounts are disturbed during the cambelt change they can fail.
