    Clutch slip

    Hi ...
    having just started to fall prey to the clutch slip fairy , (GIAC hammer map) at 32000 miles what are the chances of getting this done by the dealer with the map switched of , this is assuming it will do it with the map off, Has anyone managed to get one replaced under warranty as yet ? it is a 2007 s3 btw

    At 32 000 miles?.....I think you'd be wasting your time.

    You've actually done very well to get to that sort of mileage without problems,and even without a remap,most cars would be up for a clutch around this time.

    The clutch is a `wear item` so AUDI wont want to know.

    Unless you can prove it is the DMF that has failed (which is often the case) and you will have to pay to have the geabox out to prove that.
    That said, if it turns out to be the DMF then AUDI will replace the lot for nowt.

    Depends whether you want to take the chance.

    I know clutches are a wear & tear item, but i've never got close to wearing a clutch out so quickly. They should be fit for purpose circa 60k surely..............on standard power obviously.

    They are definitely a wear and tear item,but are we both talking about the type of cars here?

    My comments relate to turbo engined cars developing 300bhp or more,and at that level,you will find that wear is a bit faster than on normally aspirated cars even of the same power,where torque will be lower.
    Even so,to expect or even ask a manufacturer to think about replacing a clutch under warranty at 32k miles is expecting a bit much from them,when we all know the answer.

    Can't really expect them to change it on a modded vehicle can you..... I know everyone seems to begrudge Audi but this would not be a fair claim would it!

    OK thats what i thought , i have switched the map off and there is no slip and i am trading it in soon for a 996 so its not a biggy.

    My 2007 57plate 45,000miles S3 is in Audi at the minute, its had the clutch replaced under warrenty. Should be ready tomorrow, they also have done the wheel alignment as they drop the subframe. My mate with the same age, mileage car etc has also had his replaced under warrenty. Not sure if they have replaced the DMF yet as that what i was hoping so i can put the sachs uprated clutch in.

    I removed the revo stage 2+ map, intake and dv and left the milltek on

    I'm begining to have clutch issues too. Its slipping quite baldy if I launch quite hard. Never used to happen! im on 34000 Miles..
    Will have to take off my CAI and put back the engine cover if I take it in. Im not sure if they will cover it though!

    All this talk about changing clutches at such low mileage is another reason why I will not be having another Audi. My S2 had 140K on the clock with the original clutch, the A4 1.8TSQ had 95K and the 1.8E had 130K also had original clutch......so, I know the BHP is up on mapped S3's, but honestly, replacing the clutch at 30K can't be acceptable regardless of it being classed as a wear item

    I spoke to my service manager and he said they will cover one clutch under the motorplan and after that you pay!

    But it might be different in South Africa compared to you guys but what the heck if I were you I would still give it a try!

    As we know its the hike in torque that really kills the clutch, from personal experience and whats been written, a large part of the VAG range has suffered this over the years AFTER remapping etc.

    I agree though, there should be more of a margin designed into these components. And if they dont even stand upto Stage 1 tuning it does raise doubt over longevity in stock form.

    If my clutch does fail prematurely then it would affect my decision on whether to buy another 20T VAG car.

    If the clutch was failing prematurely (say <50k miles) on stock cars, I would say you would have cause to complain.

    But you cant complain one bit if the clutch wears out early on a car that you have modified for more power and torque.

    I can't believe the question has to be asked, if the clutch fails on a car producing more torque and power than Audi designed it for as a direct result of a remap then you should expect to foot the bill or revert to standard, we can't have our cake and eat it. But having said that in the current climate many dealers are keen to carry out work under warranty and keep the workshop ticking over, so in this case no need to feel guilty as its the dealer bending the rules not you ! If mine goes I think I would just go for the upgrade as it's inevitable at some point and I couldn't live with standard.

    But `back in the day`, old skool (sorry for cliches) hot hatches only needed uprated clutches when you were extreme tuning. With modern engineering I would expect premium stuff to stand up to Stage 1 tuning as a minimum.

    I am wanting to upgrade my clutch to helix or sachs - will i definately need to replace the flywheel as well? I dont think there is anything wrong with it at the minute!

    I agree with part of what you said, but we are not talking about massive gains in BHP/Torque when peoples clutches are going. As far as I am concerned a clutch should have the ability to handle a lot more than standard power......if the tolerance for wear/power/toque is that tight I can't see a clutch lasting 100K. Not unless you are driving like Miss Maisey

    I have been told by Steve at Statller it is fine just to upgrade to sachs clutch kit and keep the DMF (as long as it is working order / visual check when apart) this is what I will do when the time comes.

    Not sure if you've seen my thread about the Helix clutch I had fitted on friday on my ed30, but my DMF was perfectly fine so wasn't replaced.
    The difficulty is you cant really how bad it is till you you take the clutch apart so I guess you need to prepare for the worse just in case.
    Interestingly when my old clutch came out it appeared to be perfectly serviceable. The friction plates had plenty of meat on them and the tension springs visually at least appeared to be fine but trying to push 360lbs through it was never going to last too long.

    My clutch started slipping regularly in December last year which meant any spirited drive would cause problems so I limped along like this till last friday.
