I would also add that again Nige is right when he says parts are of a lesser quality due to costs. I have been looking at a 996 but without exception people say its going to be unreliable. I looked at a merc 350SL and again i was told that from 96-06 the quality/reliability was very poor. Audi are just another German make with a failing reputation simply because production costs in Europe are so high, from components to raw material to labour costs. financially, something has to give and that invariably has to be quality. we saw it with the British car industry where as manufactures were forced to take the cheapest quotes/tender from suppliers in order to compete with the Japanese who had better manufacturing facilities and cheaper labour. the British motorcycle industry went the same way. Germany is now having to compete with a Japanese car industry that has super high tech manufacturing facilities in the country's they supply while electronics etc are made in China at Japanese run factories ( very cheaply). the Germans cant afford to let quality slip as it is doing because they built their market on that quality and if the French can produce a new Renault megane cup with a 250bhp turbo 2ltr engine for Ł10k less than an S3 people will start to wonder why they are paying 35% more for German.

The quality isn't what it was - years ago you could buy a Merc and expect it to go on forever - that certainly doesn't seem to be the case now. It's a shame, as there are some great deals to be done on the CL/SL, but it could get expensive...

With French cars, even if the reliability is better than it used to be, the build quality is still lacking - from panel gaps to trim to dash, etc, the German cars are in a different league. But you certainly have to pay a premium for it.

If you want an Audi with a small price tag and crappy trim, then you can buy a Seat - the Cupra R is an S3 in a shellsuit minus 4WD. Other than that, pretty much the same car underneath the cheaper plastic.

Jap cars may be reliable, but I'd rather walk to work than buy a Jap car, they do nothing for me whatsoever! Other than the new R35 GT-R that is...

I have been in manufacturing/Engineering for 35 years and if my company turned out a product with the sort of issues Audi 8p's have i would have gone bust years ago. all these warranty issues have to be paid for and that is reflected in the price of the car. Its very clever marketing that sells you an A4 that frankly is not a patch on the new mondao either in build quality, ride quality of equipment and gets the customer to stump up Ł5k extra for an inferior product.
How can you possibly compare a Ford with an Audi, Fords are at the bottom of the pile along with Vauxhall & Renault. They cant even make there own engines, they have to go to Peugeot for them.
My business keeps me at the sharp end of the Motor trade, week in week out i learn what is good & what is bad in terms of cars breaking. Believe me Audi is on top along with all of the German Manufacturers.
There is not a manufacturer out there that does not have some sort of trouble with every model in its range, just some are better than others.
The main root of the problem today with all engine troubles, has been caused by strict emission controls. If you look back, as soon as the manufacturers had to tighten up its emissions thats when the problems started. They have got progressively worse ever since. Manufacturers are under huge pressure to deliver better emission control, & at the same time deliver better MPG results, & a high power output. Engines today are so stranglesd its untrue, & something has to give. Unfortunately the end user after 3 years when the warranty is out, ends up paying the price.
For my money through personal experience i have to say that VW are on top for a no quibble warranty, Audi is a close second.
Ford & Vauxhall are just pure vagabonds.
Mercedes believe it or not are pretty rubbish too.
Ive got an 06 s line 2.0 TDI that has not missed a beat, but like anything mechanical, its not what its done its how its done it.
Ive got a 97 Golf 2.0 GTI here at home that drives & performs like the day it came out of the factory, sadly those days are long gone.

I agree with the engines - everything is pulling in different directions. Better crash protection, more comfort, toys but more power & more MPG.

Sorry but statistics dont agre with you mr angry. The A3 has a 3 star rating from its owners.
any one who drives the new mondeo and then a new A4 then buys the A4 is simply buying the badge. the focus is a much praised car. handling build quality and cheap ownership. ie: no Ł150 an hour service costs. when did you last read about the brilliant handling, cheap to run, superbly equipped and great value A3 ??. sorry but the times are a changing and the idea that you can live on a reputation set in the past and turn out unreliable over complicated expensive to run cars with a ultra poor dealership network and carry on like nothing has changed in the last 10 years is not very realistic.

I think we should keep this thread on topic and avoid any talk like that.

I know thisi s getting off the subject, but Fords are bought by people who only have ever bought Fords. Just as they will only vote Labour as there Father & Grandfather did before them.
Focus does handle well, but that is it.Build quality, what build quality.Dont get me wrong, i had Fords when they were good rs2000 & 3 litre capri. But they were only good as they had no competition. That was until the 1,8 mk1 golf gti & 205 gti came along.
The A3 8P is no slouch in the handling department, dont really see how you can complain about them in that department.
As for Ł40k cars, dont you think that Ł for Ł, cars are now cheaper than they used to be when they were built properely ie mk3 golf.
If you compared salary`s & cost of living at the time when mk3 golf`s were out, dont you think they would of been a comparible Ł40k car then.
Ther is so much in the modern vehicle to go wrong, much more than there ever was 15 years ago. Thats the point i was trying to make.

Can we keep this thread on topic please, I've had to edit this thread on more than one occasion today, as the 'report post' button is starting to wear out. I'm all good for open discussion and personal opinions, but please don't direct your personal comments to other members as per forum rules.

    Thanks.
