A3 3.2 V6 DSG Niggles

Hi Everyone,

Haven't posted before however have been lurking since purchasing my 54 reg 3.2 V6 DSG back in June 09.

I have loved the car and up til now haven't had any issues with it. When I bought the car the garage had taken it to Audi to have £2000 spend on replacing and repairing various parts for the DSG box this was only 2000 miles ago but now i'm experiencing some odd behaviour from the car.

When sitting in stationary traffic the revs willtart to flutter and then get gradually worse to the point that the car is rocking forwards as if it has kangaroo petrol syndrom....but stationary, its quite violent at times and happens in D with brake on or N with brake/handbrake on and also in P.

I intially thought maybe it was just not agreeing with recent cold weather but I have checked fluid levels and they are fine and the car has recently been serviced and sitting at 78,000 miles.

Its been happening for past 3 weeks but not on a regular basis and can go a few days without problems. However its now getting to the point where at slow speed the car is surging and running rough,the bove happens but after Iput my foot down on a clear traffic free road the problem goes away.

Has anyone had any similar issues,I have read the long thread thats currently going on here with regards to the 3.2 and DSG however it doesn't sound like the problems i'm experiencing.

Also I am constantly changing the tail light bulb on the nearside lamp on my car as it goes dull then blows...is this a common Audi issue?

Despite the problems I love my car, its not the fastest out and out car I have had but overall it has everything going for it bar the sometimes worrying problem!!

To clarify the revs will dip and increase of its own accord and then together with this the car will start to shake and rock forwards and backwards until I give it a good blast and then the problem goes away.
 
If the box repairs are 2k in, then take it back to garage & get it sorted there as should easily still be covered by audi repairs warranty, easily.
 
Not convinced its anything to do with the DSG itself as the car changes up and down gears silky smooth and I have no lose of power at all

I did start to wonder if the car wasnt agreeing with the 95 unleaded I put in but think thats optimistic.....
 
I'd put money on it being the VVT solenoids. I had very similar symptoms. I hope it's not that, as it's a 4-figure fix, but it sounded like I was reading about what mine started doing...
 
If it is the VVT solenoids Pete then it shouldn't be that much unless they start on the timing chains etc. the solenoids should be an engine in job ?

Engine in, but quite a lot of parts need removed for access I believe. The parts were approx £500+VAT, and they advised something like 12 hours labour... my original quote was about £2500 just for the solenoids.
 
Holy mother hope its not that bad................will take it to Audi to see what they have to say....oddly it does it once a week if that but clearly something is wrong with the car!

I don't want to be negative, but it is very likely to be that bad - my car was just the same - it was intermittent, and varied from rough idling to the whole engine shaking the car. The issue was at low revs, and didn't happen when driving hard. The symptoms sound identical, sorry :(
 
Just looked at the Paper work and it was the chassis ECU and Sender that was replaced along with a few other parts in July 09...V6 Pete what was the cause of your problems...I mean was it a fault or was it something that caused the VVT solenoid to fail?
 
My car had a new DSG box before I bought it. It then had another new DSG box under warranty - it's quite possible that the fault were misdiagnosed as a DSG issue hence the replacement. Since my solenoids were replaced (and the chains and cam adjusters, but they were probably fine - long story...), the issue has gone away.

As far as I'm aware, the failure wasn't related to anything else, and was just one of those things. I'm not aware of it as a known fault on this engine - unlike the chain stretch which is now getting more common - but your symptoms as mentioned before are basically identical to what was up with mine.

One thing I would say is the dealer spent several hours disassembling parts of my engine in order to fully diagnose the problem - with the promise of a max of 1 hour labour billed for diagnosis - obviously some specialists would be more reluctant to take that approach, so bear that in mind. My fault was originally mis-diagnosed as chain stretch by a specialist - not their fault to be fair, as that was the best diagnosis they could make from the info they had, without investigating more thoroughly.
 
Little update..........the car has shuddered and rocked twice since my last post...today I moved my car to wash it and once finished took it out of my drive onto the road and notice the PRNDS lights flashing on the dash, thought it was odd so turned the engine off and restarted and the lights didn't come back on until I parked it again and they flashed. Anyone heard of this happening before I'm now convinced its the gearbox so its booked into Audi for tomorrow morning, luckily with it being replaced less then a year ago by the previous owner/garage I bought it off hopefully the bill will just be labour!!

There are various reasons the lights can come on, all related to DSG failure. Plugging in is the only way to know exactly what the issue is.

If the box was fitted by Audi under a year ago then the warranty should cover parts and labour to rectify.

I hope this is the case, but still not convinced it is a DSG issue causing the issues...
 
Well I took the car in and left it with Audi for the day.....got a phone call to say everything is pointing towards the ECU at a cost of £1800 and a 14 day wait....they then said its all free and I didn't even have to pay for today as that will be covered by them. tehy also found out I need a CV boot and wheel bearing which will be around £500 all in but thats better then the £1800 so i'm happy just hope it fixes the car
 
Is the car under warrenty still? Or is it good will...

Let us know what solves it!
 
Nope have no warranty on the car....they said that it was good will and will cover costs seeing as an Audi dealer fitted the new part and its failed in a short space of time...overall impressed so far as I didn't ask they agreed straight away!

Car has not had any running issues since the weekend........
