Ordered VCDS today :) cant wait for it to arrive, been reading through the manual you can download from the site. There are alot of statements in it telling you to check the repair manual for your car: "The only way to know what the values mean is to find a reference to this function in the Factory Repair Manual for your car"

Just a quick question to see what Repair Manual the guys using VCDS refer when working on Audi S3 8P and where i could purchase the correct manual??

Cheers Davie

The correct Repair Manual in this case would be the Elsawin software package. This is the manual used by dealers although it may not give all the references required. The best way to get a copy of this is through eBay. The are serveral website which may also be of help:

Beware Elsawin. I brought it from e-bay twice !! First version came on bootleg disc's from Ireland that didn't work. 2nd version was on a 6gb download but you only get the basic manual ! most options like repair info and technical solutions flow charts and spec's are disabled. It tries to go online to verify your VIN but cant contact the web site as well, you certainly will not get VCDS type data from it.
As staz says, your best option is to ask here and search the VCDS site.

I bought elsawin a few months ago but i could never get it to install properly so i gave up the setup intructions with it was shocking! typical ebay rubbish ha. I was just concerned i might try and use VCDS and i end up having to get a repair manual to fully understand what is going on. That has put my mind to rest.

Cheers Davie

I have had several versions of Elsawin over the years and so far I have always got them to install OK. My current copy is the latest version 3.61 and it gives me access to everything where an internet connection is not required. The main ones of the Workshop Repair Guide and Current Flow diagrams all work as they should.

My copy is version 3.70 and covers Audi, VW, seat and Skoda and cost me £25.00 from an eBay suppler called darnit2001 and came with a copy of Etka 7.2 as well. The instructions that came with it were fine and the installation CD came with a copy of the 'keygen' software that is need to generate the final code from the provisional code so that it all works as it should and does not keep trying to contact an internet server.

Elsawin is normally only available to dealers who have the necessary codes to connect their version to the central Audi computers so that they can work with Vehicle VIN numbers.

One problem can be that for example the instructions that came with my copy specifically say that the package is NOT compatible with Windows Vista. I am still using Windows XP but I know some people are using it with Vista but I think that is where the program has already been installed and then the computer upgraded to Vista and that seem to work OK. I have a partition on my current desktop with the new Windows 7 installed and I'm going to see if my current copy of Elsawin will install into that.
