I know what the R stands for, REALLY expensive! Lol!
I just used VW's online config and if I spec a golf R to the same spec as my S3 it would cost £35,500 !!!!!!! My S3 was £31k. Why on earth would anyone choose to buy a Golf R above an S3 then? The S3 has a better interior, is better made and above all, it costs less! The performance looks to be identical as well. Also, IMO of course, the S3 is an Audi (my experience of VW dealers from having a mkV GTi for two years from new tells me don't even go there) is better looking, way better made and more desireable. I'd be suprised if VW sell many Golf R's as if you add in Recaros, DSG and a few other options the cost gets up to £37k! Feck me and then some more - that's just taking things a bit too far IMO. In fact, I just had a look at a GTI with a few trinkets, Sat Nav, dynaudio, leather, park sensors, xenons, tracker ... that was nearly 30k. Oh dear... no wonder I've not seen many new GTI's on the road!
I guess there's always the Scirocco R? Nice looking, better priced... but crap interior (think EOS), VW dealership experince/build quality oh and 261bhp through the front wheels - Ok in the dry and in a straight line, but it rains in this country, a lot... take yesterday... Mr Bright Green Focus RS who pulled up alongside me at the A10/A14 interchange... I simply left him for dead (and I know he was trying as it was a mate of mine driving it). Sorry Jonno, should have gone S(3)pecsavers
