FAO Experts / victims of 3.2 Stretched timing chain

These problems seem to be getting pretty common now.

Has anybody had any joy getting Audi to pay for / contribute towards a repair? I'm haggling.

Also what parts have you had fitted? APS quoted 350 approx for parts - chains, tensioners, oil pump etc. Whereas my local Audi dealer said they wouldn't be confident doing the fix without also doing the cam adjusters at the same time, which are approx 400 for the pair. I'm not aware of an issue with these, so concerned this is an unnecessary addition.

Car has 61k miles, 2004 with FASH.

    Cheers,

    Pete

Audi has recently halved the recommended life of their timing belts....I don't suppose the life of their chains will bother them. They even wrote to me to tell me the timing belts on my 3.2 would need changing !!!! beat that.

Had to postpone my upgrade today till next Friday as the garage had computer problems. did get 251 bhp on the rollers in stock trim before it went futt

Not sure on what's being replaced on mine, I just know they've been waiting for parts to come in. Hopefully I'll get a full run down when I get it back next week.
I did get quoted 2030 and 2200 by two Audi dealers. The first one broke it down as 800 parts and 1200 labour.

Cheers for the info. Sounds about right - my quote is slap bang in the middle of those. Similar parts quote, so I guess they were doing the same parts.

I can understand the changing as much as possible approach if it's a warranty job, but if it's a chargeable job, I'd like to think they'd be careful about exactly what does or does not need replacement.

What upgrade have you gone for?

The life of the timing chain will start to bother them if they're handing out goodwill payments left right and centre. Still cheaper than admitting there's actually a problem I guess.

FFS... spending 3K on an engine in a Vectra must have been quite painful?

TBH none of them seem to know what the exact problem is and feel it's safer to replace the lot. I'm afraid it's a pluck and chuck society. They aren't even called mechanics anymore, just technicians lol!

Where did they go wrong ? i did 100k in my VR6 and the chain was fine.....mind you the thing had a total loss oil system by then........a gallon every 4k miles and a lot of smoke..

the fact is you pay a lot of money for a quality car and then you find out that really its no better than you average Ford or Vauxhall. Its very clever marketing that puts Audi where it is. Merc's are very much the same. to us its a quality car.......to the middle east its a taxi...We really are suckers for the spin in the UK.

Its not just the Audi, we had a Mec 2.0 E200 towed in. Ran Scan & came to the same conclusion owner had (god bless the internet forums LOL) that the chain had stretched so much the timing was out. We passed on the job, specialist in Glasgow took it on.

I spent this afternoon in a garage surrounded by Ferrari's, TVR's, Scoobies, Skylines, etc

It made me realise that trying to squeeze a few bhp out of our little hatchbacks is a little futile......
There are plenty of people making tunable performance cars and Audi probably is not one of them......
Its a different world....You see that 246 Dino on the ramp ? the owner has a 4k a month contract to with this company to keep it competitive and running in the club race circuit....thats 50k a year....

I like serious sports cars as much as the next man, but that photo doesn't do the place justice... a piece of crap Skyline, piece of crap generic Jap shed in the middle and a 12 year old Cerbera. Your "little hatchback" is probably worth more than most of the cars in that pic!

There are two more bays like that and a car park outside just dripping nice things.....that 246 Dino is worth more than all our 3.2 put together.

I take your point but all those cars were far from std ...

I just wonder if your chasing HP then maybe we haven't got a great starting point...maybe i am wrong..who knows ?

I have been looking at Remus back cans and the part number for the Audi A3 3.2 is the same as all the other A3's including the diesel. did you have to cut the valance to fit yours ? and did you need the adaptor section they advertise ?

Maybe it was just that pic then... just saying not to put your car down, an A3 isn't the best car on the road, but I'd rather own this than a ropey old Cerbera!

No definitely no adapter needed. I think they are just for the smaller engine models with a smaller bore exhaust. It was a direct fit to the 3.2. No cutting of the valanace was required - it fits the same as the original exhaust, just slightly larger tailpipes.
