Having trawled throught the threads on here http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=48471&highlight=upgrade+headlight+bulbs am still to discover a definitively agreed suggestion for upgraded bulbs that could replace the current halogen bulbs, and are a legal alternative.
If anyone can let me know of a tried and tested buld that is better than standard and I will not be wasting my money on Please let me know...

Auto Express test halogen uprated bulbs every year and published the results of this year's tests in their 14 October issue.

The best, according to their tests are:

Plus 30 bulbs: Philips Premium - 5 star rating - Beam rating 130

Plus 50 bulbs: Philips Vision Plus - 5 star rating - Beam rating 154

50 Plus bulbs: Philips X-tremme Power - 5 star rating - beam rating 172

The also popular Osram Night Breakers only got a 4 star rating with a Beam rating of 142.

To get the the Beam rating their used the industry formula adding the 50-metre readings and doubling the 75-metre readings - where light is most needed.

Hope this is some help to those trying to decide what bulbs to buy.

Why don't you retrofit OEM xenons, gives the front end a far more aggressive look also...

Yes but that will work out considerably more expensive that a set of upgraded halogen bulbs!!

I don't know how much you would need to spend on OEM Xenons, plus automatic self-levelling and headlamps washers (legal requirement with Xenons) but it will be a lot more than two pairs of Philips X-treme Powers bulbs at £27.85 per pair.

Had thought about upgrading to Xenon but just too much hastle and have other mods which are far more pressing for me. So went for crypric23's bulb which he rated and also had purchased some orsam which were only a tenner!!

Will post some pics when they are in and let you know my thoughts.
