Since the mornings have started to get colder I have noticed that first thing when I drive off and go from 1st to 2nd gear there is a crunch/snagg which will almost disappear as the car warms up. I have had fresh oil put in the box and hasn't really made much difference.

I was thinking that perhaps it could be the baulk ring on the 2nd gear syncro but then someone else mentioned that it could be a weak clutch pressure plate so try double clutching before I go into 2nd and see what happens.
So I go clutch down and into first, pull away then clutch down, out of gear, clutch up and down again and into 2nd and then it doesn't appear to crunch.

I have also tried this before changing into 3rd,4th,5th and 6th and it does appear to make the gear change much smoother. Also works better for changing down the box.

What is clutch drag and how do I tell if this happens ?

So does this make sense to anybody on here or can the suggest anything else I can try so I can determine whether it is clutch related or gearbox related ? Sorry it is a 2.0tdi 6 speed. with 63k on the clock.

Thanks in advance

clutch drag is where the clutch plate isnt fully disengaging - it makes it difficult to change gear particularly 1st/2nd so would fit your symptoms

my be release bearing wear or pressure plate worn out, i dont know if there is any adjustment in the peddle to make sure the clutch is fully disengaged with less peddle press?

the gearboxes are generally very strong so i would suspect clutch rather than synchro

sounds like you are in for a clutch/plate/bearing replacement soon

Thanks for your reply. Do you know why it appears to only affect 1st to 2nd the most, is it something to do with that syncro has to slow down the greatest speed difference between gears ?

Would you say I am looking at a massive expense ? should the dual mass flywheel be changed at the same time ?

Can anyone suggest a good place to get a genuine Audi clutch and flywheel but not from an audi dealer ?

Dave, I got my kit from Midland Car Spares, 01902 717313. This was for a Sachs clutch kit - Clutch, DMF and release bearing. £385 plus £15 postage to Belfast. Think the postage is waived if you are mainland.

That was for my 1.9tdi Sportback, but give them a shout and im sure it won't be far out.

Thanks for that, what happened about your starting problem tates1979 ?

Just received new starter - my brother in law is gonna fit it on Saturday, fingers crossed!!

Did you manage to get your new starter fitted at the weekend ?

Also my car has been to my local audi specialist again about the clutch/gearbox issue and I have been told that it isn't the clutch or flywheel playing up it appears to be the 2nd gear synchro. Total cost to have the box over hauled with all new bearings and rings plus labour comes to £1350!!! If I want to put a genuine clutch and flywheel in at the same time then it goes upto £2010!!! :( Would you say this is far too expensive or about right for this kind of job ? Are there any cheaper alternatives ? Car only has 60,000 miles on it.

I would be looking at aftermarket Sachs or Helix IIRC, these are better if you're having to do clutch aswell.

Eurocarparts or GSF have the sachs clutchs and flywheels in stock - I guess either of these would be ok even though they are not genuine audi parts ?

Is it worth trying to chase audi for any kid of goodwill towards a gearbox repair/replacement as it has always been serviced by them ?

Hi,
My 2.0TDI A3 used to have a lurchy/rough 1st to 2nd gear engagement no matter how smooth I tried to be with the clutch, I fitted a Uprated dogbone mount from awesome gti, and it has really smoothed out the gear change from 1st to second, maybe try this first to see if it helps, they are only £40.

Yeah mate go for it, 60k car, is it less than 5 years old as this helps if you want any help from audi uk.

It has just turned 5 years old a few days ago!!! I will ring a dealer and see what happens. Would it be ok to use parts from either euro car parts or gsf or would you recommend genuine ?

Thanks for your help, I will try those email addresses you have given me. Can I ask again if you think using GSF or Eurocarparts clutch/flywheel is a good idea or should I stick to genuine ?

Thanks

Oops sorry mate I read that bit was gonna reply then clicked submit, tit huh, lol.

Well if they are selling a sachs or helix kit then I'd have no issues with buying them given, they're the uprated ones, interms of a pattern part for that component, I'm not to sure thats a good idea, given how detrimental it is & if it did go faulty due to inferior manufacturing then whats the damage to the rest of the car, but sachs & helix are a good move overall, better than oem for sure.
