The car's at Harrogate. It's not my choice but I've nothing against it going there, it was sent there by the dealer I bought the car from.
MPG wise, I don't think mine is pretty much off from where it should be. Depends what you mean by steady driving? Anywhere around Bradford you'll be lucky to get into the mid/high 20's. On a motorway I can stretch it to mid 30's with an economical right foot!, but the reading on the dis for the overall mpg is nearer 21.
That is pretty much what I used to get with my old 3.2 sportback which was perfect.
I'm currently running around in a B150 and ignoring what the dis says, it's actually not much better than the A3 IMO.
What problems are you having with yours exactly?

Yeh mine shows about the same ...its just im sure it used to do more mpg ??? i have had the car a few years now .. had a new gearbox and the ecu at 28k, since then a new maf ..two new coil packs ... but had the above problem from about 35k .. the car was sweet after the gearbox change but since the warrenty run out just been a nightmare ...
keeping an eye on the thread guys are doing a great job.

Hold the bus - the new part is near enough identical to the old one. I was convinced it was worn, as it only times up properly when you pull on the cam and take up the extra slack... wierd.

Oh well, I guess i am now putting everything back together and seeing if changing the chains has helped at all.

should have the car back together over the weekend.

    Doh!!!!!

At least that means the rest of us shouldn't have that wear issue on that part!

    Good luck!

    might have found something tonight.

Just about to bolt my flywheel up, when i noticed an awful lot of side to side movement, I dont mean rotational side to side, I mean lateral side to side movement. Then my mate recalled a situation where a failed dual mass flywheel on a commercial van was triggering off the knock sensors, causes near untracable faults like the ones we are experiencing.

Question is, how much side to side movement is normal?
    Anyone know?

Symptons of a degrading dual mass flywheel are:

    1) Excessive vibration, sometimes worse on overrun
    2) Juddering
    3) Clunking between accelleration and decelleration
    4) Clutch may have good bite, but may feel "rubbery."
    5) Rattling

are you talking about crankshaft end float ?

Just thought i would let everyone know that my car is now fixed.

ended up being a total mare engine out job, and I have fitted new chains (old ones had a combined 5mm stretch on them) and fitted a new flywheel (well not new but better than the heap that came out!)

car now runs and idles perfectly and everything is very smooth.
    Hesitation is gone.

If i were to stick my neck out i would say my problems were caused by the flywheel setting the knock sensors off, but while i was there i would have changed the chains at the same time anyway.

Off on a trip to scotland in it tonight, lets hope i tightened all the bolts up properly lol

    happy days

well, you will be pleased or not pleased to know that the fault still exists on my car after a replacement flywheel and new chains.
both were worn on my car, but didnt really have an effect on performance.

my car is still fluffy below 2000rpm, and appears to have gotten worse a few hundred miles after the engine has been put back together.

I didnt really have a look at the VVT actuators and i am kicking my self for not doing so, but one of them did stick when i first fired the car up. and stuck the inlet cam in the wrong position, which really accentuated the problem. i stuck a 12 volt supply in it and clicked it in and out a few times, and it freed it up. that is the only thing left to try now, well that, coils, and plugs.

Well after 5 weeks, mines actually done now and waiting to be picked up as soon as the bill is paid. I have the final Invoice and EVERYTHING has been changed, both chains all sprockets, tensioners, guide rails, top case AND the vvt's. Total Bill just over 3100. Hopefully I'll get the car back this week and I can see if it's done the trick. I know the chain noise has gone as I was there on Saturday but didn't have the opportunity to check the misfire.

well mine felt good this morning, i dont know whether I am just being stupid or not.
I can actually hold the revs at 2000rpm, it doesnt jump about like it did before. but it still a bit fluffy below that, and i can tell when i am doing slow maneouvres as the dsg box seems to sense that theres no torque in the fluffy region just above idle, and doesnt engage, then i give it a bit of revs and it lurches forward.

plugs looks ok to be honest, but then i have seen plugs that look perfect are and knackered.

I have 2 spare coils, but i dont know the condition of them. I suppose i could start swapping them about, to see what happens.

I thought the coil packs just fail completely? you can actually hear the thing misfiring every couple of seconds or so when you hold the revs.

Got the car back today and I can report that I have no chain noises and today it drove perfectly smooth with no hesitation that I could feel. However I still cannot hold the engine at a steady 2k rpm, it bounces around just as before. I can confirm that everything has been changed on the flywheel side of the engine apart from the flywheel and also it's had another set of plugs (the 3rd since I've had it). So the issue, if there still is one, lies somewhere else!
I'll evaluate it over the weekend and compare it to my mates known to be perfect 3.2 to see how his revs.
For now though I'm glad that my 5 weeks and 2 days of torture is over

Trying to load the new map but we get an invalid address error code. Been in touch with the equip suppliers in Italy and we think we have a protocol code now that will work......fingers crossed.

unless you have had it categorically fixed by changing these then i would not take it for granted.

we have had people on here change the solonoids and the effect persists.

my plugs will be here tomorrow, so thats another thing to tick off the list.

Well I'll know next week when they've finished with it.

New chains, tensioners, oil pump etc. along with new solenoid. If the problem is there, Audi will have spent a week on my car and fitted 1000+ of parts for nothing!

Tried plugs and coilpacks already, no change.

I wouldn't hold your breath mate, I've had mine changed and although mine drove perfect yesterday, I'm not sure it's cured as I still can't hold steady revs below 2k rpm.

Oddly enough though, with a cold engine, I can hold the revs without any issues. Would that be down to fueling?

My problem is a little different though - it's not so much a problem holding steady revs, but intermittent issues of serious misfiring / bouncing revs / etc.

We do have exactly the same problem.

so far we can rule out all chains, sprockets and tensioners, VVT solonoids, I am going to try some new plugs today but i am not holding my breath.

    Only coils left?
or engine mapping, but why the hell would the engine ECU start to do that? unless its always done it and people havent really noticed.

pull the plugs off the side and tap a 12v supply on and off the contacts to actuate the solonoid about 20 times, bet it clears your problem up.

The car is currently in pieces in Northampton Audi, having this and all the chains, etc. replaced....
