development. I have swapped the fuel pump ecu relay and the problem has been reduced quite a bit. its still a little fluffy, but how can it reduce the problem but not clear it? what are the odds of having 2 faulty relays?

I am wondering if this is a bad earth fault?

Don't suppose you have disturbed a corroded pin socket on the relay board. by swapping the relays you might have got a better contact but not a perfect one ??

I wonder if changing the relay has reset the ecu?

nah i doubt that will happen, no power has been cut to the ecu, and even if it did that wouldnt reset the ecu immediately.
and I have vag commed the car and reset the ecu before and it never made that much difference.

hmmm, I wonder if there is a fault with the relay board?

I just can't see it being anything to do with the fuel pump relay, surely all that does is turn the pump on/off, it won't control the actual fueling.

Maybe it is then, but why would it be always at the same point in the revs.
It could be that my chain rattle is a seperate issue but I don't think so, it's too closely connected to the misfire that I'm getting.
I may give the garage a ring tomorrow to see if they've diagnosed it yet, although I've been told by my better half to stop poking my nose in

Yeah chase them up see what they have to say
Who knows what effect a dodgey fuel pump relay will have. It could be having a spiking effect on the vvt actuator, or it could even be supplying power to the VVT solonoids or something.
I will see if my fuel economy improves any.

Paddy - can you find the location of the camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 I am assuming its the solenoid. bet its a rocker cover and side plate off job.

The Camshaft afjustment valve (N205) is number 3, That's already been changed on mine and yes you have to remove the cover to get at the fixing bolts

I am beginning to think this could be different faults we are chasing.

If i drive at exactly 2k in 6th, my car feels like i am intermittently lifting my foot off the gas for maybe 1/2 second every 2-3 seconds. If i could dab the brakes really quickly that would be about it. At first i thought it was right on the point of changing gear . Problem has passed by 2300 rpm. It is more noticeable obviously up hill, under load which is why i doubt its chains on mine, especially as i have only just hit 40k miles and it started doing it shortly after its 36k long service.

What you guys have seems a little more extreme ??

I agree with coxy that its electrical on mine. I had something similer on a bike once and i traced it to a plug lead shorting out intermitantly under load..............after i had changed the coils and the ECU

    Thumbs up

Well I drove to work today with no issues to speak off. The problem manifested it self on my car most if i had a very small throttle opening, from 1500rpm through to about 2500rpm where the car would feel exactly like paddy says, slightly on and off the throttle - like minor driveline shunt.

I actually think i could feel this issue right up past 3000rpm, but its masked more by the speed of the engine.

Didnt get that at all this morning, and the car holds 2000rpm now, although the throttle can still be a little fluffy at these openings I suspect I have now sorted my problem. I might invest in a brand new fuel pump relay, and do a full ecu reset and throttle adaptation again.

Will let you know how I get on.

    Ian

edit: point to note, the relay I took off had 'kracker' written on the side of it, and was white, where as the relay i put in from my spare board looked like a proper vw one with the big number on the side of it.

Sorry Ian, what have you done that has sorted it?

The oil change? or have you done something electrical as well?

Although it feels like a gearchange, I don't believe it's related, I just think there are more dsg 3.2's than manuals!

I'd love a mini meet from anybody local to me to compare the problem, Im in Bradford but don't mind a bit of travelling.

Mines actually MUCH worse now than when I got it. I'm also hoping to get it in this week once and for all and it IS chain related on mine. I have the following fault codes at the moment:-

    16395 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
    P0011 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

    16398 - Bank 1: Camshaft B (Exhaust): Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
    P0014 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Audi want to strip out the gearbox and open it up to see whats going on, but i've read loads of stuff on the internet about 3.2 chain problems from tensioners to chains to oil pressure and problems related to the variable service interval and I reckon it could be that the tensioner is not adjusting properly. I've been monitoring the chain for lengthening from day one and it's well within tolerance at 2 and 1 (out of tolerance is over 8) and it's never really moved from that.

Hi live near Bingley if you want to come and have a listen, Mines a manual and find idle sometimes affected by fuel. ticks over better on 98 ron fuel rather than normal unleaded where the tach needle wobbles abit. Apart from that runs well.

Hi there Simon and thanks for the offer. The cars in at the dealers at the moment and it might come back sorted out...... lol!!.
I rang them today and surprise surprise, it's not been worked on yet. Apparently they've listened to the engine and decided the gearbox has got to come out before they can find out what is going on with the rattle. I asked him if the misfire was related and he said.....................Oh has it got a misfire!. Not exactly confidence inspiring is it!

I expect it'll be in there all next week.

How's the car Ian, fingers crossed it really was that simple!

spoke too soon, it appears to be back...hmmm I wonder if this relay is knackered too, as it definately ran a hell of a lot better when i plugged it in.

Going to strip the relay down and spray it with contact cleaner, and see if it makes it any better. If it does, then its new relay time!

If you take my chain noise out of the equation, that's how mine is so I do think they are all the same problem. It's too much of a coincedence that we all have very similar symptoms.

so i went and bought a brand new fuel pump relay, no joy.

so, its not the maf, cam sensors, fuel pump relay as I have replaced those. Its not the vvt actuator as 3.2 Ju has replaced those. Not sure what else there is?!

Has anyone with this problem actually had their cars remapped? It would seem every who has this problem has always had it from day 1? Could be just a batch of bad maps or something. I have a spare ecu that i am going to try see if that has an affect. Other than that we are looking either earth/wiring faults, or a problem with the oilways in the vvt?

Its a head scratcher. I honestly dont think its the chains as it wouldnt pull so well if they were all stretched and knackered.

Huddersfield were good when I bought mine from them. The service has always been good also.

I went to Harrogate as they are my local dealers and was getting abit annoyiong drivng to Huddersfield.

Harrogate cocked up big time on some paintwork and were found to be utterly useless in that respect. Prior to that the car had it's MOT done there and no complaints.

I think they should be ok mechanically but I would never take mine back there for bodywork. You only have to look the cars they have for sale...... Swirl heaven.

Coxy, I have always thought the problem might have been sorted through a re-map.

As you know the Mk4 had to have a map recall at the exact revs you lot are having issues at.
