    GSM Iphone Cradle

    Hi All

Just a quick question regarding the iphone cradle for the GSM phone prep. What is the actual point of this and what will I gain with one. I have searched and the only thing I can see is that my phone will get charged when its in the car. A few posts mention the phonebook being displayed in full on the display. Just connecting with bluetooth gives me that, so is there something i am missing or would I be paying 90 just to charge the phone?

Yep! That's why AFAIK most people (myself included) have never bothered with an adaptor.

A fool and his money are easily parted, so I'm coughing up the cash for one of these. I'm not really sure why, to be honest.

    +1

Nice to charge the phone without cables dangling around the car. As I go into the last throws of S3 ownership a cradle finally arrives!

I guess when you have a phone where the battery life is a bit pants then it's a useful thing!

    GSM phone prep

Block, ur correct, the phone prep does connect to shark fin on roof and gives better mobile signal, saving ur phone battery. However, I cannot understand how a company havent found a way to make cradles for new phones. Audi are so slow to upgrade the cradles and it is pointless having this setup on my dash for nothing.

I dont want to buy an old 2006/07 phone. Does anyone know anyone / a company that tries to use the factory prep but use new cradles??

And if not, is there a way to remove this piece of plastic on my dash??

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the bluetooth unit uses the sharkfin antenna too so it's just the same signal without the adaptor.

I meant to post this when Block posted the above, I spent ages looking for where I read it and then gave up.

My understanding is that this happens with virtually all other phones. The iPhone cradle, for some reason, is unable to utilise the car's external aerial.

Or so I have been told.

I believe this is the case due to Apple not supporting the aerial in/out through the 30pin Dock connecter.

Anyone any part numbers for the iphone cradle?

I have the GSM prep but no cradle and now have the iphone - no where really to keep it and may as well use what the car was spec'd with!

    Thanks

Guys, I beleive the Phone Cradle does have other benefits, particularly rSAP but weather the IPhone supports this technology I'm not sure as I don't have one................................yet!

Bluetooth cannot use the shark fin aerial because the GSM/PCN transmitter and receiver are in the handset not the cars bluetooth module. The phone does not send the tx/rx signals over bluetooth.

Don't think so . I'm off to try and find out if the iphone has an external aerial connection as my BMW iphone cradle says it connects to the external aerial.

I'm not an expert in this, but let me add my 1's worth

The car kit cradle has two purposes.

    1. It provides you with an interface that allows you to purchase (from Audi) a range of mobile phone specific docks. Its quite a limited range, mainly older phones, however they have added the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS (note two different docking cradles) I'm not sure of all the features supported by the iPhone port. Charging for sure, along with DIS support, MFSW control etc. There is no physical connection for the sharks fin aerial on the roof, however I believe there is an induction type interface which allows the iPhone to utilise the roof aerial. Not quite as efficient as a physical connection, but better than no connection at all. The iPhone does NOT support remote SIM Access Profile (rSAP)

Biggest pain I find is that the number of characters supported by the DIS is quite limited. If you have an address book contact named John Smith and another named John Smitherington both will only show up on DIS as John Smit... if your lucky! (on the A3 with just DIS. I think RNS-E owners are better off) Adding the cradle doesn't improve what you see on the DIS.

    2. All modern mobiles now have Bluetooth built in, and all to the same Bluetooth standard (I know some people have various connectivity/address book issues but not going to address that here) That's one reason why Audi are not churning out phone specific docks. Bluetooth can do almost everything the dock does with two exceptions: Charging the Phone and connecting the phone to the external aerial. But even Audi (and the mobile manufacturers have thought of that)

Remember the rSAP function mentioned above? (that the iPhone DOESNT have?)

Well rSAP allows, via a Bluetooth interface, your incar kit to access the SIM card inside your phone (hence the name rSAP) It can transfer all your contacts from phone to car kit (just like regular Bluetooth) and it uses your SIM card to make a call over the operators network (just like bluetooth) BUT it places your phone into a sleep mode (saves your battery life) and uses the roof mounted aerial to place the call which "normal" non rSAP bluetooth cant do.

Of course providing rSAP comes at a cost. The rSAP module from Audi is about 300 (and plugs onto the cradle already provided as part of the phone prep) and not all mobiles have the rSAP feature built in (but lots do) The Audi module supports any phone that has rSAP functionality - but it doesn't give you somewhere to securely hold the phone! It is an expensive option, but if your keeping the car for a while, you only have to ft it once and you can change your phone model as often as you like (as long as its rSAP enabled) If you buy a dock for every phone you get that could work out even more expensive at around 100 a pop.

Details on the Audi rSAP module on the below link>

One on Ebay at the minute for 80+3 p&p matching the same part number given above - however, the ebayer says it works for both 3g and 3gs? I thought you needed separate cradles for this?

I want one of these, but as the iPhone 4G is due out shortly it makes me wonder whether it is worth spending the 100.

Problem is these docks aren't cheap, and by the time Audi's development team send them out, you're almost ready to change your handset for a new one.

Is rSAP the only way the car can read contacts from the phone via Bluetooth? If the iPhone doesn't support this does that mean that no one can use the dash controls to select a contact?!

    Hi Staz,

You don't need rSAP. If your using regular Bluetooth (which the iPhone has) the phonebook will transfer just fine and you can use your MFSW to browse the phonebook via the DIS, make calls and adjust the volume control. The rSAP function is controlled over bluetooth and uses the external aerial, but puts the phone into sleep mode. You then control the phone either from the rSAP module you've fitted onto your cradle, or your MFSW (if fitted)

I have the iPhone 3GS and it works just fine on my A3 OEM factory installed bluetooth kit. I'm not using the iPhone dock, as its in the armrest, and I like to see when I have new txt messages etc. Im using the Brodit Pro clip to mount my phone on. Really neat and not like some tacky mount on the air outlet types. See below for pic. There are a few mounting options for the A3. I use the one shown in pic 2. Let me know if you want me to post a pic. Dead easy to fix. (Loads on eBay by the way)

    http://www.dsldevelopments.com/searc...&DisplayPage=2

The one thing I do wish Audi had on the MFSW is a mute button

Bit of an odd combo but i've spec'd iPod dock & BT prep... I am wondering if I can use the iPod dock to charge the iPhone and play my tunes and if I can then answer the phone over BT whilst it's docked? Sorry for hijacking the OP's thread!

The iPod dock will not charge an iPhone without a charge converter (such as http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TW...co=MTY3ODQ5OTY )sat between the two, however the AMI option with RNS-E will charge due to different cable etc.

Once your charging is sorted you can do exactly as you describe.

    Hope that makes sense.
