Thumbs up BSH Catch can group buy offer - CLOSED

    Hi folks

I have been reading various threads about JonnyC's coking valves and have decided that as there is an offer on for catch cans I am going to invest.

    See link here

For 100 it seems a decent price and saves me doing any PCV mods etc..

I just need to decide whether I am going to Seafoam in order to try an decoke the valves before fitting it.

This is a pic of JonnyC's valves and they weren't high mileage:

    More info: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/in...p?topic=7040.0

At the current price I think it is another one of those sensible protection products which can help to overcome some of the VAG oversights particularly on modified cars.

Go to the site, register, and put your name on the group buy (think it is about page 8 at the moment). List is quite extensive and there seems to be no opposition to non Golf Mk5 forum members signing up for it.

FYI: This is not my group buy so I know nothing further than this, just wanted to give you all a heads up that I'd seen it through another forum.

Get your wallets out DAMN quick if you are interested as by tomorrow morning it will be closed.

Yeah it's a known issue/limitation which is made worse by Direct Injection.

The Yanks are really feeling it with lower quality fuels and oils.

And if you mount a catch can, then you have to clean the valves? Or it cleans itself?

I'd like to see some real world testing of this item to prove it will work as to often see ideas that dont actually do anything, with my blown turbo recently it has led me to look into the engine more & I have found some ghastly ****e caked in the intake manifold that no way can be solely from my turbo blowing cause the oil didnt get that far through the intake system so reading up on this kinda makes me wonder, might take manifold of to have a look inside see how caked it really is, someone mentioned more boost the worst it is so remapping hasnt helped, now with hybrid it will get worse, oh the joys of owning cars huh.

Well given the good weather and a few spare minutes I have to hand, I went out to have a look and see whether I could fit the catch can.

After looking at potential installation locations near the battery, where the OEM intake used to be, and near the carbon canister, I decided on the latter as there appeared to be just enough room. If I want to change a DRL bulb I will have to remove the catch can, but at least its not a big issue.

There is a gap between the plastic slam panel cover and the slam panel itself which enabled me to slot the catch can bracket between the two layers and then bolt it in.

There was just enough clearance between the bottom of the can and the belts on the side of the engine to make it a viable fit:

The job went pretty smoothly apart from 2 minor workarounds.

    1) Taking the excess of the right angle joint threads

The right angle joints protrude beyond the inner edge of the alloy panel which connects to the head. I had to use a long hacksaw blade and a fine file to cut these down. I then used PTFE tape on the threads to ensure that were they to move about during driving they have a slightly better seal than if they had no form of sealant. I didn't have any thread sealant / loctite to hand so this will have to do for now.

    2) Connecting the right hand air pipe
If you look in the picture below, you will see a thick black OEM pipe (apologies for the lack of techno speak) connecting to a silver collar (top right hand side of the photo). This pipe clips off and on by flexing an outer hoop and it dislocates the connection.

When you have fitted the BSH panel and then you fit the metal collar (the spanner required for this is enormous, possibly 23mm or over), getting the OEM pipe back on is a nightmare as there really isn't much slack on the pipe (on the S3). The collar has to go on first. Then you have to get the OEM as straight as you can before attaching it to do it successfully otherwise the O ring pinches.

You will no longer have a pipe going to the plastic manifold section, and I found the cap which blocks this off had unusual sized connection bolts. Turns out the 3 silver bolts seem to be an imperial size allan key rather than metric (possibly due to being a US kit). Think it was 1/8".

Also I only had 3 jubilee clips (use 6mm socket for the supplied clips), so I had to supplement a spare from my personal stores.

Started the car and fortunately all works, and no unexpected side effects. I have to assume there are therefore no air leaks. Idle sat solid as usual, but initial notes are that the slight hesitation is still there as usual. Whether this will ever clear remains to be seen.

I assumed the brassy coloured wing nut at the base needed to be done up, so I'd done it up tight. A bit of AutoGlym vinyl and rubber cleaner helps you get the can in and out nice and easily.

If you are doing it yourself you will need the following tools:

    1/8" allan key
    T25 torx bit
    Small ratchet and extension bar
    6mm socket
    Stanley knife
    PTFE tape
    Long hacksaw blade
    Fine edged file
23mm(?) spanner or a very large adjustable head wrench
Drill & drill bits (if you end up drilling the slam panel)
2 nuts, washers and bolts to connect the bracket to the slam panel
A spare jubilee clip (if your kit only has 3)
Some lint free cloths to clean openings

Job time: If you are skilled, less than an hour, if you are me, hour and a half (deciding on location takes the most time)

If you are fitting it yourself, be mindful of routing your pipes, and ensure nothing rubs / fouls / kinks.

Only other thing of note is RIGHT pipe to the TOP of the catch can, LEFT pipe to the side.

    Any questions fire away!

I'm very surprised any of this is necessary if you use a good fully synthetic oil.

If you'd have seen the sludge in my OEM pipes you would be glad to have one. Just another one of the foibles of the 2.0TFSi.

Warrencox I read on SCN that you were having some issues with the car hunting idle after the install. Any more info on this?

BSH suggest there could be a leak in the PCV system somewhere if you get this problem.

Yes, was bought to my attention that the cap they give you to seal the inlet manifold doesn't always form 100% seal so its best to use an offcut of piping between the manifold and the end cap. Hopefully this will resolve he issue tonight!

Warren, do you get any burning oil smell in your car? Apparently this is one of the side effects of this mod?

I can smell it a tiny bit if I open the bonnet, but not inside the car.

As it all beds in car seems to run a little smoother, particularly now I have reseated the inlet manifold blanking cap. Think there was a minor leak on this originally causing a fluctuation in idle RPM, but now resealed it is all OK.

Are you thinking of the race can which vents to atmosphere? You would certainly get oil smells with that but I would be surprised if you get oil smells with the standard catch can.

I run with a Neutradol air freshener jammed in each door as my sinuses get really irritated by pungent air fresheners (Magic trees have me in fits of sneezes). Any slight smells will be masked by the odor absorbers, but as KRL says the road system is sealed, so the only under bonnet odors you tend to get are the usual under bonnet smells. There was the slightest hint of oil smell from mine, but I found a slight leak in a joint which I've now rectified.

The engine certainly seems to run far more smoothly in cold air conditions as it had got really jerky with the OEM PCV system on it.

Anyone who is skeptical about this product should see this link.

Makes you wonder what's going on inside the engine with the PCV fitted.
