you need to set the radio type

    go to the cd changer
select disk 6 and press the left bottom soft button - you get an on-screen round circle with various forward/reverse options for the changer

rotate the round knob to select the next track and press the lge round button (cant remember if its forward or next) - should move to item2, then another press is 3 etc - go to item 24 (radio type t) and select scan to confirm - it will tell you radio type t selected, then beep
the rns-e and buttons will now do what they are supposed to do

now you can use the top left soft button to choose the various functions - cd4 for artist, cd3 for album etc, and the forward/back or steering wheel roller will select the previous/next of whatever you chose eg artist.

in artist mode, press and hold the forward/back to jump letters rather than individual artists and holding the mfsw roller is the same as holding the forward button

at this point it should all be rather obvious once the buttons and doing what they are supposed to be doing

hi boydie, phatnoise is the vw/audi music keg with a 20gb drive installed into it, which can be removed and connected to a dock on ur pc for drag and drop music etc, its a fantastic piece of kit, it will actually speak to u announcing track names album titles etc. best 200 ive spent lol

it was sold through audi dealers but only available on ebay now second hand - audi and vw heads think its got a cd changer attached but the disks 1 - 6 select various functions and playback lists etc and it speaks selections to you so you dont need to look at a display to choose any of your music collection

fortunately someone has a crack for the hard disk in the cartridge - you can now use standard ide drives once the unit is patched - then a 160gig hd is only about 40 - should hold a decent amount of music then...

in terms of a slick interface to an audi head unit, then yes:

you can get gigs of music with access via only the 6 buttons on an audi head unit and the voice readout, high quality electronics, some degree of multifunction wheel control and all for about 120-200

if you already have a changer - just plug in the phatnoise instead - done

if you dont have a changer, get an audi cd changer cable and plug one end into your head unit and the other into the phatbox, then recode your head unit and/or steering wheel to tell the car you have a cd changer fitted - job done.

be aware that most ebay changer cables dont have the changer power ground wire in them, only the audio signal ground, so the unit wont power up until you fit a power earth lead somewhere or buy the proper lead....

problem with the ipod is that it isnt handy at all - you have to pick it up and use the scroll wheel while you are driving - not good at all

the interface kits enable cds 1 to 6 to play a selection of preselected playlists but thats it - very limited in reality

the phatnoise gives you full access to gigs of music via playlists, artist, genre or album and you can access any individual music via the 6 changer buttons, without being too distracted or looking at a small screen whilst driving.
