If you get someone who actually knows the cars, just randomly browsing the site they wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about if you said you had an 8P2. They'd actually have to look up this thread to find out that you'd come up with a numbering system for the models and then it would make sense to them. Anything starting 8P0/1/2/3/4 instantly makes me think part numbers.
But there have been instances of people using descriptions like that that DON'T make sense! Also that example makes sense to you but it won't make sense the vast majority of newer members. Nor of course will the 8P1/2/3 system but at least this way they can learn the system in about 2 minutes instead of trying to suss it all out over a period of time from various threads which all use terms like 'pre-facelift' which don't all mean the same car.

Don't forget how confusing things can be when you're new to it. It's like one of those puzzles that you just CANNOT work out, then when someone tells you the answer you see how bloody simple it was. It's not hard to tell the cars apart once you know the differences but some people new to the A3 could be so clueless that they don't even know what a facelift is in the first place. Others may know there are differences but not know the background. This thread hopefully removes ALL ambiguity in one fell swoop.

It all just seems a bit pointless to me.
You seem to be the only one who feels that way. I respect your opinion but I just don't think you're looking at the bigger picture.

I think the first 8P3s were from the start of the 2009 Model Year in June 2008. The first Pricing and Specification Guide showing the 8P3 was dated June 2008.

This particular thread is rather strange. It's about two seperate items:

    1. The naming of the various versions of the 8P

    2. Do we like thin ladies.

    Strange!!

Officially its 8P1 for A3, 8P7 for A3 Cab & there are also 2 other ones for 5 dr A3 which show as 8PA in elsa & this is the bible as such, personally I'd just have double grill, single grill & facelift as this is understandable by everyone old & new to AS as it is also a descript of your car version & usually tallies up with parts aswell, easy cause double was 03-05, single was 05-08 & facelift was 08-present, this is by far the simplest because everyone knows exactly what these are & if they dont then they have no hope, lol

I'd also have to agree with Mitch tbh, I think we're adding more confusion to new users I really do, well versed as us would know exactly whats what you'd think anyway, but many others wouldnt, so no need to shut your mouth Mitch as I also see this as a very valid point & also about the parts, I see daily 8p1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in etka

TBH to me overall its just plain 8P, its not exactly a ball breaker to say single, double, facelift etc etc, everyone knows these descripts well across the mk2 anyway

Or is it cooler to have 8P3 in your sig than 8P1 lmfao, gonna make mine 8PTractor1

Hmmm, not sure about all this, I'm in two minds.......

..... is she too much of a 'hard body' and lacking curves, or is she heaven in a bikini????

On the naming thing.... not sure I get it.
New member joins, thinking of getting an A3, and they get a whole new naming convention for the car, that has no significance than in here.
Goes to dealer, yeah I'm looking for an A3, the 8P2 version..... dealer looks on blankly.....

I understand why your trying and it does have logic for existing members that know, but not sure its serving any useful long term purpose.
    Sorry

I can see both sides of the argument.

BUT if someone said "facelift" then I would assume it was the 2005-2008 version first of all, and definitely wouldn't think it only refers to 2008 onwards.
Even seen "facelift" quoted on numerous autotrader ads and all over ebay, all referring to 2005-2008 models. In fact, even seen it on here millions of times too.
So I'm not sure "everyone knows exactly what these are".

The other problem with double grille, single grille, facelift etc is how do you describe a car that has had the front grille changed by the owner.

Hmmm, 8P1 doesn't become 8P2 just cause it has changed the grill though does it?
    Otherwise mine is 8P2.5

    Sorry
To be fair this thread isn't specifically aimed at people who are thinking about getting a new A3. It's not here to advise them on the history of the 8P. That information can be found on the internet easily. I agree they may get confused though so I will edit the introduction to my first post to make it more clear.

It's supposed to be for use by all, new or old, to help us all distinguish between the models. The vast majority of members on here already own an A3 so the issue above is irrelevant. As I said to Mitch, it may be simple for you to work out the differences but it won't be so easy for new members. PLUS when those new members try to talk about a car it's easier for them to tell you or any other seasoned member of ASN which model they're talking about.

I'm not going to force everyone to start using the system. The thread started off as an idea initially and there were quite a lot of responses so I guess it's a popular idea. We'll see how it goes.

It was a little yeah and that's fine with me. If you use it then great, if not then great too. But it has been used recently I noticed, so it must serve a purpose for some people.

with the new naming convention... does anyone know where I can get the 8P3 rear diffuser with the exhaust hole cut for the twin pipes and not the single one? I dont like how Audi have started shipping the 2.0 TDI with one pipe

It means when I get a new exhaust I need to find a new diffuser/valance as well..

    Thanks,
    Chris

sorry to bump, was wondering if MY11 should be 8P4?! there's probably about as much change between 8P1 and 8P2 as there is between 8P3 and "8P4"

yeah but for example there wasn't a rear light change - there was here. there wasn't an RNS-E change, there was here. wheels changed, engines changed (intro of 1.2T), exhausts changed (more engines with single), addition of start/stop
