    Heavy Vibration at 2.2 Thousand Revs

    Hi Guys,

    I have an A3 2.0 TDI Quattro with 100000 miles on.

    When ever I get to just above 2000 revs, the car makes a lot of noise, and vibrates, but once I get to about 2600 revs its ok again.

    This happens in all gears, can someone please help.

    Am sure someone can come up with a definitive answer, but when something similar happened to my ex-GF's Ford Escort it turned out that the engine mounts were shot. Is certainly possible on a 100k-mile car, and diesel's are heavier engines that tend to vibrate more than petrols in the first place.

    To get a proper answer - you need to get vagcom on it to see if it brings up anyfault codes or you could be spending money on parts you dont need

    id get it checked out if i were you, do it as early as possible. could be something very major but could also be something very minor!

    It's funny you say this as my car appears to be displaying similar symptoms around the same rpm. It's only recently and i don't know if it's a coincidence but the only thing i've done recently, like you, is mapping it using the ST3!

    I originally thought it maybe DMFW vibration or wheel wobble because it appeared lightly in fifth at 62mph (approx 2-2.2k rpm). Now i get a very distinct judder / vibration worst felt 1.9k to around 2.5k in second gear at full throttle.. i was thinking that the turbo was starting to stick??

    That said I was at Audi at the weekend for a free health check (don't laugh guys) so i removed the map and I was unable to replicate this on the way there and back!?

    I don't have Vagcom either and i'm not saying this is our ST3 map but smells fishy to me?! Wonder if it's worth trying your car without the map and feeding back the results?

    I dont trust these damn maps clutch problems and from what your saying mate its overkill on the engine , I think them st3 are pushing the cars to hard , Ive not herd any probs from revos or others it these st3S..... I dont think il be getting one im gona go revo when i do id rather spend 500 and have piece of mind that my turbo isnt gona die my clutch dosent slip and my car dosent fall to bits .....

    Mine does it ever so slightly at the same revs. 2006 A3 2.0 TDi Quattro...& standard. Seems like you can accelerate through the vibration.
    Im thinking an engine mount tbh, but not had a real chance to poke about as yet.

    Economy map seems just as powerful as Fast Road tbh. Delivery seems smoother and can't replicate juddering second however it does appear at lower revs (1.4k ish) in third albeit a much reduced case.

    I'm going to go back and stick with Economy again, it's the best for my journeys anyway (short bursts of power buy mainly cruising dual carriage) .


    10blazin: are you suggesting this would be classed as clutch slip?
    I've seen clutch slip vids of the S3's and they didn't seem to judder, the rev counters just seemed to rev more without extra drive then the drive would pick up again??

    ByronM: yes the vibration defo goes.. the original clutch is at 47,200ish miles however previous owner must have been a muppet because i got the car at 38K and the engine died (oil pressure issue between cylinders) after a further 800miles. New engine fitted under warranty but not sure if the mounts would have been changed?? It's the 1.9TDi by the way...

    no other thread,s with clutches slipping ,turbo pipes blowing ,kazes turbo blew ,this engine judder all about 2 to 3 months after getting st3s .....

    But my car is standard and the symptons are the same for me??! Which means your theory is flawed.

    Guys,

    My car does it with the original map, and the map has not made a difference to the juddering, the thing with the juddering is, it gets very noisey around 2200 revs but the acceleration still carries on like normal! And then is ok after 2600 revs.

    After some more digging around and speaking with some industry people, I am starting to think my judder is down to the dual mass flywheel failing.
    Diagnosis isnt confirmed as yet, although symptons all point to a common fault.

    I work in the fleet industry, and have exposure to 100's of maintained VAG products - and we have conclusive history and evidence to suggest this is the problem. Bummer.

    flywheel had to be replaced on my previous A3 TDI 54 plate

    I had a low vibration at low revs, especially noticable when under loads such as hill starts. audi stealer quoted me 1,200 to replace flywheel and clutch.

    i pointed out it was under used warranty and got it replaced

    If it's a Quattro could it be something to do with the prop or drive shaft?

    After i had my 330diesel beemer mapped with a bit of wear and tear i experienced a judder/vibration under heavy boost, which was early on in the rev range like you've said. It turned out to be either the mounts for either the drive or prop shaft - can't remember which..

    Don't take much notice of my ideas... just thought i'd offer the idea!

    Sounds like engine mounts to me. Car's done some miles so they could be rock solid or even split.

    I just had similar problem with my car - turned out to be the weight on the propshaft for the quattro.

    Did you ever get this problem resolved and what was it?
    My 2.0tdi quattro is now exhibiting exactly the same issues. around 2200 revs there is a heavy vibration especially in 6th, but goes if you drive through it at 2800
    Its driving me nuts because in 6th thats around 70-80 mph cruising speed.
    Suspect it could be the DMF?? or possibly the rear engine stabilizer/mount
    if you could let me know

    follow this thread guys, you can do the job yourself if you have a ramp/pit and its fixed for 250.

    Audi 55reg quattro load vibrating at 2 thousands revs

    I've heard of people being told by audi that its the propshaft being out of balance, ********!
    Thats coz they charge you 1k+ for the prop then probably 8 hours labour for a job that takes less than 2!
    Money scamming buggers that they are!!!!!!!!!!! Time to get a new marque i think!
