Can any one tell me where the fuel pump is located on the s3? How big a job is it to remove and replce the internals?

Under the engine bay - top right, sitting on top of the engine. Gold/silver colour with a black plastic top on it containing the part no.
Easy job to replace the internals but VERY risky to do it yourself on your own car with no experience. I wouldn't fancy it.

No i wouldnt be doing it myself, as you say far to risky. Would a local garage be able to do it or is it best to go to a specialist?

Personally - I would only take it to someone who could confirm they had done a few beforehand successfully.
Mine was done at AmD where they do hundreds and they told me it was slow, steady work. You have to be very careful. It is EASY to do (technically) but get it wrong and its not going to be good.
I drove 240 miles to AmD and 240 back again because I knew they had done loads before and knew what they were doing - and I'm not sorry.
I could have got a local garage to do it and saved the time/cost but is it worth the risk ?

The High-Pressure fuel pump in the engine bay (as opposed to the in-tank sender fuel pump) has to be bled first, if I remember correctly. -Failure to do so correctly results in the stored high-pressure fuel being sprayed as a fine (and extremely combustible) fuel-air mist inside the engine bay. -If the engine is hot, it's not a safe place to be, and if there's any spark or naked flame around... it doesn't end well!

I know a geezer who got fuel sprayed in his face, dropped the spanner which was in his hand, it made a spark, and "woof"...

With a "how-to" I know that it can be done, but you DO need to know which steps to be extremely dilligent and careful over.
