    sounding like a kazoo!

    hi guys,
yet another problem, i am really beginning to dislike my car!

on my way home from work this morning, i noticed the car making an actual whistling sound, like someone had whistled on me, when pulling away! (so much so that i stopped and looked around to see who was whistling! DUH!)
now this happened when the turbo kicked in for about the first couple of miles, then the kids kazoo sound started between about 2000 and 3500 revs!
i think there might be a slight loss of power as well, but i really didnt want to give it any welly once this awful sound had appeared!
i am dreading to ask, but does this mean my turbo is f**ked, and if yes, how long will i be able to drive the car, as i need it for work!
    cheers guys!
ps. on searching this site, this thread came up, i dont know if its relevant or not!

Sounds to me like you have a split hose somewhere. Have a look around and see if there is anything obvious. Other than that it will need a pressure check.

    thanks,
just had a look around the engine, , god i am clueless!!!
couldnt see anything, although that doesnt mean much, as i dont have a clue what im looking for!!!
when im sitting at standstill and revving the engine, nothing, but when i drive it, whistling and kazooing very loudly!!
are most run off mill garages equipped to do this pressure check, or does it need to be a specialist?
    cheers

You will need to take the top engine cover off and look at all the hoses you can see. Especially the ones from the turbo.

will do cheers. so is this normal, to only whistle/kazoo when driving and not do it when just sitting revving? as this makes it almost impossible to locate the leak, other than visually!

Usually don't get any noise unless the car is under load and the turbo has come in

Hi Mate, Have been looking for a diagram of your engine but can't find one. If you can locate the turbo check all the pipes from it and to it. Also check the intercooler (small radiator) pipes. Hoses are the first thing to check. If you can get it Vag-com'd that would be the best bet if you can't find any leaks. This would show any failing valves like the diverter valve or a defective turbo actuator. Not that knowledgeable about the Audi diesel but just looking at the basic things I would check.

thanks again, i cant see anything noticeable, but its hard to see anything in there! ive put my original map back on my ecu, as it seems to be too much of a coincidence, that after less than a week of having the fast-road map on this has happened! dont know if im imagining it, but it was a little quieter, although it does still sound rediculous!!!
i will try and find a garage near to me that can pressure test it, although it is hard to find a decent garage near me!!!

Would you say it also sounds like a dentist drill?

Maybe you could record a sound clip?

I still think there is a good chance there is a boost leak somewhere, especially seeing boost would have been increased with the map. Who did the remap? Maybe you could go back to them and say the car is now making a noise. Although, I would have thought prior to the map everything would have been checked. I would have also thought that if it was a valve like the diverter(710) you would not just get a loss noise but a loss of power. There are a few people after having remaps that have experienced a severe whooshing sound. This was down to the Turbo waste gate actuator (N75) not being able to handle the extra boost. Also the most people change the diverter valve to a Forge diverter as the standard 710 is crap. Here is an extract from another post

Yes mate, It looked ok to be honest, I was expecting it to be Wrecked but I cleaned it up a little and Inspected it and it seemed fine, Maybe if I was to crack it open then would I see the split?? or is there a way to actually find out without mashing it up??

Before I changed the valves it was getting louder as in there was a whooshing sound - maybe that was because My pipe was reay to completely blow off but it sounded a little like an atmospheric dump valve sometimes..

chipped uk done it, via the st3 unit, and im not sure about sounding like the dentists drill, it is just a gradual whistle at 2-2.5k revs then this buzzy kazoo sound from 2.5-3k revs then it stops at higher revs!

chipped uk did the re-map via an st3 unit, so there was no checking of the car first!!!

ps. it starts of as only a whistle when the engines cold, but when the engine reaches its optimum running temperature, is when it starts the buzzy/kazoo noise!
do you think this might be because the hoses are cold to start with and as the engine heats up, the hoses do, becoming more supple, making a split open/loosen more?

took the car to the garage yesterday and the 'mechanic' went for a spin with me, and instantly said the turbo's knackered

i asked what he based this diagnosis on, and he said, and i quote, 'if a turbo diesel engine whistles, it always means the turbo's knacked!'
so when he tried to book me in, i made my excuses and left!
now after trawling t'internet all day yesterday, i have booked the car into a company called 'argyle diesel electrics ltd' who are going to pressure test the engine tomorrow!
so heres hoping its just a hose or something, fingers crossed!

ok, had the car at a diesel specialist round my way.
they pressure checked the engine and what they found was a small leak
where the boost pipe connects to the turbo, and its a new pipe thats on,
so the lugs on the turbo where the pipe connects have been slightly worn,
    causing this slight leak!
now the mechanic, who seemed to know what he was talking about, gave
    me 2 choices!
if it was his car, he would just turn the radio up slightly! OR
renew the turbo, which is a touch more expensive!

so we got talking, and i mentioned ive only had the car 2 months, and he asked if i had got any kind of warranty with it, which i did!
so we read through the policy, and the maximum they would pay out for repairs (that they cover) is 750
he said that he might be able to 'find' a fault with the turbo that means it would be covered under warranty!
has anyone else had a turbo replaced under warranty, and if so, what was the problem?
and how much is the going rate for getting a turbo renewed nowadays anyway?
    cheers

never bought the car from audi, bought it from a garage who gave me a 6 month warranty with some crowd called 'motorcare' and the claim limit is 750!!!
not sure what they cover as the policy is written in gobble-de-gook and very very vague (deliberately of course!)
but it does state something along the lines of, no part that is faulty due to wear and tear is covered!!!
    doesnt leave much else!!!

hard to say mate, the boost pipe blew off after a week or so of buying it, and it wasnt re-mapped then!
uploaded the new map and it was fine for about a week, then the whistling and kazoo sounds suddenly appeared, so dont know!
but the mechanic did say that the lugs wearing on the pipe would also cause the opposing lugs on the turbo housing to wear as well, so who knows!!!

what i was wondering though was, has anyone ever their self or heard of anyone putting any kind of araldite formula or other such substance where the boost pipe connects?

    cheers
