    econ light

hi, my car was in the garage last week as some of you may already know,
getting a new turbo intake pipe fitted as the old one blew off,
(big bang, lots of black smoke!!!)
now i noticed today that my 'econ' button/light was on, and i am unable to swith it off. i have had a look on here at some other posts regarding this issue, ie. faulty pressure switches, not been re-gassed properly etc...
but i am wondering, is it possible that while it was in the garage there is maybe something in that area they might have done to cause this, as
the light wasnt on previous to this!!!
    OR
is it possible that i just need my AC re-charged, and if so, what is a reasonable price to get this done?
    thanks!

Check the F8 Fuse mate (in the manual to its location) and let us know how you get on

if its blown, replace it and see how it goes.

EDIT: is the emissions light on?

it looks liek this and is in the dash cluster where the revs are

Fuse box is in the far right next to the battery - you have to slide to clips and pull it open...

Here's a pic of the fusebox opened with the battery without the cover on - yours wont have the blue or red wire from the battery.

is this a serious problem, do you think, or does the AC just need regased?

Vagcom (yet again) could help to diagnose the problem. It is possible that it just needs re-gassed. There are probably other places you could take it to that specalized in aircon? Lucas used to do a free health check but i'm sure they went to the wall recently...

Then invest in it! If you only have one or two faults on your car then VAG-COM can easily pay for itself,

If the F8 fuse is fine, the blow off from the pipe hasnt doen any damaged to the IMF or anything - if that goes, the f8 fuse goes with it as well a broken IMF.

It could jsut be a AC issue now matey but get it on vagcom to get to the route of the prob!

Have a read of the relevent part in this thread mate:

    http://audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=57270

I would suggest that it's very possible something was knocked out of place whilst your car was in for work.

Have a close look around the compressor and follow the hoses as best you can all around the engine bay and to the condensor.

If you can't visually see anything wrong then you might have to take it to a specialist.

thanks buddy, but as you may have noticed, i am a bit dim when it comes to all things motor related!!!
where is the compressor and the condensor, and what do they look like, please?
so you think it might be possible it has something to do with the garage it was in last week?

i have just driven home from work, and the AC was on when i was stationary outside of work, 'econ off obviously!'
then when i pulled away, econ on, then stopped at traffic lights half mile down road, econ off, AC heard kicking in, pulled away, econ on, heard AC turning off again!!! next set off lights same scenario, except when i pulled away, the AC stayed on and econ off for about 2 miles, then alas back to the original problem, econ on permanently again!!!

Yeah, you have a fault! lol

If the econ is kicking in and out I would say it could be a pressure thing and it's dropping in and out of the allowable limit.

    OR

There could be a faulty/loose connection somewhere.

Ok the condensor is a radiator looking thing mounted to the font of the engine bay attached to your radiator. The air con hoses are different to others and look similar to this:

If you follow those hoses around the engine bay you'll find that 2 of them (one thicker than the other) both join onto a motor looking thing attached to the side of the engine (it's on the left as you look at it on a TFSI engine) it looks like this:

This is the compressor. It has 1 electrical connection, this controls the electromagnetic clutch (used to turn it off and on) you could try checking the connection on it by wiggling the cable about along it's length, particularly at the connector.

If it's not that and everything looks ok then take it to a specialist and he can pressure check it straight away. Of if you find someone with VCDS they'll be able to tell you if it's the pressure or not.

So you know, refrigerant has a greenish tint to it, so if you find any of that then you have a leak. It can be fairly hard to spot without the special torch or a sniffer though.

EDIT: lol I didn't know you'd bumped, I just haven't be online since my last

No worries mate. I'm always happy to help people who want to try to help themselves. I get frustrated at work when I get called out on a job for something simple where the user should have been able to suss it out.

I haven't used VCDS for fault finding before to be honest. I would assume though that if the car knows the pressure is out of limits and disables the air con then it would flag up a fault code to state that too.

If you get fualts and don't know what they mean just post them on this thread and we'll try and work it out.

    hi,
met up with 'sleeves_008' from here today, and the car through up a few faults after scanning. when he emails me the log of the scan i will post up the codes, see what you guys make of them!
now i had a look around the engine, and could not see anything obvious that was loose or damaged and after we scanned the car today, he cleared the codes and i drove most of the way home with the AC on, and it stayed on! (had to turn it off, me and my son were freezing!!!)
so fingers crossed, but im thinking, as it was fairly cold outside today anyway, maybe the AC wasnt working too hard anyway to keep the temperature inside the car at artic conditions and when the outside temperature gets hot and i need the the AC, thats when the 'ECON' light will come back on!

but anyway, i shall post the fault codes when i get them!

i would also like to say a big thanks to 'sleeves_008' for his time and help. a nice guy who went out of his way to help and who knew what he was talking about, so cheers again mate!

Did you clear the codes and did they come back after they were cleared?

Unsure on the first one but it is to do with the A/C and the other ones im pretty sure are associated with the pipe popping off.

This guy had the same faut code 00819 (http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=22368849) and his A/C wasnt workign either.

Im certain that they're all linked with the pipe bowing off and they could have just needed clearing to get the car running again...

I'll take it its runing fine now?

yes we cleared the codes, see post #23 for details.

so you think that my intake pipe blowing off has thrown up these fault codes and caused the AC system to shut down?

any ideas about the last one, 'the rear door window motor one'?

Nothing to worry about - if the battery was disconected or the sensors jolted up and down whilst the car was moving - that could have been the cause of that.

If the cars working fine and all is good, i dont think you have anything to worry about tbh.

Not been on since we last chatted Martyboy but those first codes are 3 different faults with the same sensor! Maybe the sensor is on the way out. Only time, and heat, will tell.

do you think there is a possibility that clearing the codes might have done the job, or am i just clutching at straws?!?!

and do you know if its a big job or expensive to replace this sensor?

    cheers again!

Yeah I think so mate. The first 2 are 2 minutes apart and the other 1 was 2 days later!!! I really have no experience with this sort of fault diagnosis but if I was a betting man I'd say the sensor is buggered.

The pressure sensor can be anywhere on the high pressure side which is pretty much half of the whole system so I don't know how easy it is to change or the cost to be honest. The system would need to be broken into to replace it anyway, so the refrigerant would need to be recovered, the work done and then it put back in again. That just adds to the cost.

I would wait and see what happens. If it goes again at least you're armed with the knowledge of the fault codes.

just an update, cos i know you are all dying to hear about my AC or lack of it!
the econ light has been of since the codes were cleared with vagcom last week, then for reasons unbeknown to me, it came on this morning on my way to work, and wouldnt go off, same again on my return from work!
i then went out this evening and the light stayed off for the whole journey, and i even tryed having the AC on for a while, and it worked!!!
i am confused and p*ssed off!
can anyone recommend an AC specialist or even a good garage/mechanic near me, that i could take the car to. i am in east kilbride, just south of glasgow, and i really need to have the AC working for the hot weather starting!!! the missus is pregnant and would like to be comfortable whilst being chauffered around, and would also like for the baby to be comfortable when it arrives in august!!!

Yeah I'd say that sensor is goosed or it's at least got a loose connection.

I wouldn't be too scared to go to Audi directly in this case. The fault codes are there and they'll know better than any where the sensor is.
