Best place to get tyres???

I need to get two new front tyres on my TDI shortly (after only 8000 miles!!!!) they are conti SP2s 225/40/R18 92Y - and i would prefer to replace like with like - anybody got any tips on where to get these from?

Also, on the same note i've had a quick look around and can only find SP2 N2 or something or S3 - have they been changed?

Just checked event and they want £286 for 2 tyres fitted - is this the best i will get do you think?

You could try Costco if you have a membership there. I got 4 Michelin Pilot Sports from there a few months back and they were £115 each. But they were only 17's. So you could try and see if they got any 18's. My previous tyres were Conti's and I think these Michelin ones are a bit more comfortable and the grip is great!
 
well finally got round to getting new tyres - forced upon me by a puncture as it happens (in a diff tyre to the ones being replaced sods law!) so got a mobile tyre firm out this am to sort the lot in one go - had good testimonials on the website so i thought i'd give them a go.

The result.....

All three wheels with multiple areas of damage (pristine and non-kerbed beforehand)

Great! This is what you get when you 'trust' someone.

I've told them i want three brand new wheels putting on my car. Not accepting refurbishment.

It wasn't event mobile tyres was it? I used them for years without issue but then they damaged two wheels and refused to admit liability.

I hadn't pointed out they were perfect beforehand so they just claimed it was old damage.

It's unfortunate nobody seems to have any integrity these days.

I still haven't got them refurbed but I'll be £100 out of pocket at some point.
 
No it wasn't event. I'm reluctant to say who it is until i get something sorted. I have been told by the manager that I will be 100 percent happy by the end and three new wheels will be ordered on Monday
 
now something else i have noticed - why would having new tyres fitted cause the car to now not track in a straight line, ie, when car going straight steering wheel ever so slightly to one side - even though this was perfect with old tyres??

Any ideas?
 
Maybe wheels not balanced properly?
 
surely that wouldn't cause it to track wrong - this would cause wheel wobble at high speed? It isn't wobbling at high speed.
 
no but i'm going to check them tonight - would this have this much impact ont he tracking - i do remember actually he said he put 30 in fronts and should have been 35 - he topped the passenger one up but the airline wouldn't reach the drivers so i said i'd sort it - would 5psi really make this much difference?
 
tyre pressures now fine im at a loss with this - i had my wheel go out of alignment on my old A3 and i could never ever get it straight again - audi just came out with some crap about the steering column being twisted.

Also tyre place have said that new wheels are £360 each so they are trying to get me to get my old ones refurbed at the wheel specialist - anyone had any dealings??

What should i do???? So ****** off. Had 4 spotless, original audi wheels prior to saturday.
 
i've now also noticed a funny noise when pressing my brakes firmly - kind of a rattly whispy kind of noise - again not sure why i havent noticed before the new tyres if it wasn't present beforehand but dunno how changing the tyres can possibly have caused this.

Re the tracking - i've been reading up on it and it seems the general consensus is that generally tracking is harder to 'knock' out than garages would have you believe - by all accounts you would have to give a wheel a good hard knock - say ramming it up a kerb or something to cause enough force to bend something in the suspension - only other things that would change tracking over time is worn suspension components bushes etc - clearly this cant be the case as my car has 10k on it. The state of my wheels (even now) suggests that they haven't come into contact with anything untoward or with any force - so how could tracking be out?

lol what do you mean back to the thread??? it is my thread and it has run its course through choosing a tyre fitter!!!! read above!
 
How worn is the tyre you never changed as if its pretty worn it may cause some tracking probs even on the rear i believe
 
i didn't change either on the rear - had one rear puncture repaired but same tyre went back on - both have about 6-7 mms of tread so plenty
 
ah ok i read it as 3 new ones sorry otherthing might be them not balanced right on the front check the tyres are on in the correct position aswell
 
think balance is fine as they don't wobble on motorway - they gotta come off agains anyway to either go on new rims or have the rims refurbed (but properly - tyre off strip down to metal job) - i'm really hoping when they go back on again the problem will correct itself?
 
right looks like ive gotta have the wheels refurbished - new ones are £460 a pop ( i thought they were £250)

anyway i have been in touch with a place called the wheel specialists - have been up there today to see their work. have to be honest on the face of it for refurbishment it looks pretty good - they don't repair the wheels they just completely re-coat them (so hot blast them to metal then completely re-finish inside and out)

Anyone had any dealings?

The next question is all four are being done so wondering whether to change the colour - quite liking this dark grey look wheels i keep seeing but not sure how they will look on my car it is dolphin grey - they are probably best on a contrasting colour right - like white? Or maybe im best just going for as close a finish to factory to keep it as original as possible.

Any suggestions/opinions?
 
omg do people really read threads anymore? - you only have to read a couple of posts up to see that i've gone past the point of 'choosing' where to buy tyres from......
 
ok well I can at least answer the opposite of this question now and release where NOT to get tyres from. Mobi-tyres.co.uk - they will ruin your wheels, then get them refurbished to a very poor standard, then tell you that is all you are getting and leave you high and dry.

Before dealing with this company I had 4 mint (i mean mint) flawless original audi 18" S-line wheels in original factory finish (unrefurbished) and i now have 4 wheels which although at a distance look ok, under close scrutiny are nowhere near the standard they were, ie, flawless.

STAY AWAY PEOPLE.
 
Mobi tyres use lots of different fitters, its not the company that screwed your wheels, its the incompetent fitter.

I have used this company before and was really worried when a young lad 18-19 years old started whipping my wheels off. When he got in his van it had all the right gear in it, plastic tools etc, couldnt beleive how quick and easy he made a 235/35/19 fit, looked effortless with no damage whatsoever, Easily the best tyre fitter I have seen in action.

You obviously got unlucky and ended up with Billy bodger!
 
But it's still their problem if they are using tyre fitters that are incompetent. And in any case they come in a mobi-tyre branded vehicle so as far as i'm concerned the tyre fitted works for the company - no need to get any more complicated than that. Mobi-tyres are responsible, and have left me high and dry.

Remember the sign of a good service/company is not what they do when things go right - the most important thing is what they do when things go wrong - these leave you high and dry - and thats the company NOT the fitters.
 
If you're within driving distance, I'd always recommend Tyres Northampton. Not the cheapest, but always pretty close to Black Circles etc pricing. They've fitted a lot of tyres for me on different wheels on different cars, and never the slightest mark.

I'm just bored of dealing with **** companies that do a **** job. It's refreshing that there's companies like Tyres N'pton out there that still take pride in doing a good job.
 
well thats a bit far - nothing a new set of wheels won't cure - however this is going to cost me dearly - a fair bit more than the £270 for new tyres
 
Got four 225/45/17 Kumho KU31s fitted today (£315 delivered with mobile fitter from BlackCircles). Excellent service - the guy was done in an hour with no damage to the wheels. I suppose it wouldn't have mattered if he did damage them because they all need refurbing...

I picked the Kumhos mainly on price but also because they'd done very well in tyre reviews (EVO magazine issue 110 if you have it). Third overall for rolling resistance which given my car is a 2.0TDI, and therefore not particularly sporty, is arguably an important attribute. Driving home they're noticeably quieter than the Goodyear GSD1s (fronts) and Pirelli 6000s (rears) I was running before. Early days but I wouldn't ignore these tyres at this price.

those kumhos are good tyres - i ha them on my golf, my mum has them on hermerc and my uncle has them on his vectra 3.2 V6! A softer tyre but handles really good in the dry and not so bad in the wet and give a good feel!

Very very good value fr money but do wear a it on the quick side but still, worth the money! :D
 
Well for anyone with wheel damage or needing tyres I'd not hesitate to recommend Lepsons! Had 2 kerb damaged alloys fixed with them, and 4 new tyres all round. Perfect job and couldn't be happier. Very rare to find a company I'll say that about these days!!!

I have used their Gillingham branch and they can make badly kerbed, warped etc alloys absolutely perfect again. They also have a tyre branch who will fit new tyres if you need them without scratching your alloys up. Tyre price was the best around too!

Steve, if you haven't got yours sorted yet, get your wheels to these guys and then pass the bill onto the mobile tyre fitters you used. :icon_thumright:

Threads on a public forum are for the benefit of everybody that reads it, not just you! tut tut :asskicking:

I was going to suggest Camskill, they are pretty cheap, and Blackcirlces are also very good, used them a couple of times.
