The dreaded coolent warning came on the other day. The car is an A3 2.0 TDI (2004). I topped it back up to inbetween the maximum and minimum and it dropped to bang on the minimum line after approx 110 miles (so not a huge water loss, but still significant).

I took it down to the Audi specialist today and after 1 hour on the pressure test it didn't show up any loss of pressure. I spoke to two garages and the general consensus is that I should drive the car around and monitor the coolant loss and oil level (to check whether the oil is going through the head). Quite frankly I do not even want to contemplate the fact that it could be leaking though the block :(

My question is whether anyone would do anything differently or look out for anything else inparticular (I am aware that several of you will have already been through this experience). I expect to do almost 1000 miles in the coming week so the last thing I need is to risk damaging anything else like the turbo.

I am tempted to change the header tank first as I have never been too happy about that being literally two pieces of plastic glued together, and from what I know of a pressure test a leak in the header tank would not show up.

Quite frankly part of me wants this problem to be the cylinder head so that I can get rid of this horribly weak pourus head which has been bugging me since I found out about it (unfortunately after I purchased the car!!).

Any thoughts are most welcome.

have a look under the filler cap, has that got any signs of mayo?

if you are loosing that much coolant then i would certainly say you most probably have a head problem for sure.

There aren't any tell-tail signs under the filler cap so far. Really the level dropped enough for the warning to come on the DIS, and then I topped it up once and it dropped down to the minimum so maybe there hasn't been enough time for the white deposits to build up.

Check the header tank filler cap I had similar problem with my A4 Avant, changed the tank, still same problem, changed the cap problem solved.

i've had this problem and its come back

i started getting the coolant flashing at me so i booked it into audi and they pressure tested it and it showed up nothing so i went to midland vw and they looked into it.

they replaced my egr valve? because it was leaking and the turbo, nothing to do with the coolant but also my head gasket.

i thought that was it. 500 miles later COOLANT! flashed at me again.

so i took it back pretty angry, they said it could have been a air pocket which sucked the coolant through. so they sent me off to see if it happened again.

which it did, so i went back and they wacked it on the ramps and they found a tiny hose clip which was leaking and they replaced it for free.

and now within the last week it has started again, slightly slower leak but its still a leak, my cars going back in the garage in the next week.

WHY cant audi recognize this as a hugh problem with early a3's.

its getting really annoying now

just want it fixed :motz:

A couple of things for you:

1. What mileage have you guys got on your cars? Was the waterpump replaced with the timing belt? The water pumps have a feature designed in to allow any water that passes the seal to stay in a small trap, the heat of the engine allows this water to evaporate over time without causing a nasty "run" down the block/timing belt cover.

2. Have you guys ever tried Radweld?
If there's a tiny leak from around a hose, or from the radiator itself, the radweld will seal it up.
I would only use it to buy you a bit of time, better than having to replace the head etc.

I read about this on the honest john website i am sure it mentioned radiator leeks in line with the head failing... worth a look. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=545 but does not mention if this is the TDi or petrol or both!!

Does anyone know if at some point Audi fixed this in the factory?? (living in hope 56/170 owner)

im pretty sure that they had solved the problem by 56

from what i've seen its only the very early a3's
mines a 04 and has 97,000 miles

My money is on the water pump seal.

The pressure test won't pick it up, and the seal will only leak "very slowly" as the engine runs (the two sealing surfaces will pull the water through).

If they weren't exchange items I would say, pop the timing belt cover off and drill a small pilot hole at the bottom of the welded in "welch plug" if any liquid runs out, bingo.

The earlier models had two problems. The first was porosity of the head, the other failure of the radiator. The latter then caused the head gasket to fail, rapidly followed by the head itself.

Just a quick update on this issue...

Firsty the problem does seem to have stopped for the moment!! I just drove 150 miles without any real loss of coolant! I am hoping the reason for this is that when the water pump was changed (4,000 miles ago) the mechanic did not properly bleed the system and that accounted for the loss in coolant. However, the coolant does not seem to have been lost at a constant rate - infact I only noticed it start 1,000 miles ago. I will have to continue to monitor this...

To answer a couple of other questions people have asked:

  1. I have checked the radiator for signs of leekage and there isnt any. There is a spot in the bottom corner of the radiator which tends to leek on these cars but mine looks fine. My coolant has a red dye in it so I would expect to be able to see a red tinge somewhere on the radiator if it was leeking. Also, it seemed absolutely fine on the pressure test.
  2. I have considered using radweld, but as I intend to keep the car I would rather find and fix the issue now if I can. I can appreciate it could be advantagous for some people to prolong the symptoms but in my case I would rather fix it and not potentially damage any other parts of the car whilst waiting to do the permanant (I hope!) fix.
  3. It was just the very early (04 - 05) 2.0 TDI's that had the pourus head. However, I would certainly be interested in seeing the VIN range of cars effected if anyone knows it?
