    I hate snow!!

Skidded across a T-Junction today and put the S3 into someones garden brick wall. Gutted.

Fair play to German engineering, the wall came off far worse. Main damage is mostly cosmetic. New front bumper, new headlight on drivers side, and new washer bottle.

More serious damage is to the drivers front wheel which took a nasty kerb slightly sideways and seems to be slightly out of alignment now (steering wheel is slightly off centre too)

Now, for those who ahve been here before, would you suggest going for the insurers preferred repairer, or should I insist on Audi??

Sorry to hear that mate - major downer!
Insist on Audi if I were you!
At least they will be familier with the car and Audi guarentee the work, so if anything isn't quite right you send it back and they HAVE to get it back to showroom spec.
I've had an issue with some paint work on mine and they take it back without any argument. Just more reassurance for you really.

Always insist on Audi. Anti corrosion warranty is void if you don't.

    Damn - sorry to hear.

Go Audi mate - they have their warranty on paintwork so if anyone else was to touch it and there was an issue with the paintwork in the future, audi wouldnt pay.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I agree I should insist on Audi, i'll give the insurance a ring this morning.

Luckily its just the front bumper so no need to replace or respray any of the panels or bonnet

I almost had an accident on monday when i was going round this corner when i almost collided with an oncoming car just because the cars parked in the pavement were blocking my view and i couldnt stop because of the snow. Luckily the left side of the pavement was clear and i managed to steer up the other side of the pavement or my front end would be gone! Anyway, insist going with audi if they let you.

This is why I drive with my hand over the handbrake at all times, in snow.
If you find yourself 'snow ploughing' straight on, pull the handbrake on, kick the arse around and you often get yourself out of trouble.
    One of the advantages of getting more snow than you boys;
    Practice!

    3500 though!

nope. labour was just short of 700 too, so most of the cost is purely for Audi parts, and probably huge margins.

You can see why insurers push you to their own approved garages!

What percentage is it they use to determine a write-off?
    50%???
If so, your little prang would write-off a car worth 7k...

    Never understood that (urban myth?)

Using your example, why right a cheque for 7000 when to repair would be 3500

Because they will get a salvage value for the car at auction and save on courtesy car costs. They've done their sums; don't worry!

Mates mother in law stuffed her Merc recently, and the Insurance co paid to have it fixed at around 80% of the cars value.

My mate tried to pursade the Ins Co. to write the car off and they refused on the basis that it was still cheaper for them to to fix it than pay out on a total loss.

Many moons ago I had a Corrado written off based on the fact that the repair was 3.5K and the Ins co valued the car at 6K, (which was a ridiculous valuation at the time)

I fought the valuation and after weeks of debate they paid out 7.5K, which meant the car was written off for a repair costing much less than 50% of the final pay out.
    Idiots.

To add insult to injury the tw@ts wouldnt let me buy the car back!

Just doesnt seem to be consistency from what Ive seen.

Insurance Companies? Daylight robbery more like......

    cheers

good your getting it sorted mate.

My clever neighbour reversed stright out of his driveway into the farside of my car on a clear sunny day (go figure) so i went stright to audi who took the car gave me a brand new 0millage a4 sline with the navi/bose and dsg for courtesy car till the car was repaired.

Can not complain at all the service was great and got the car back looking like the day i bought it...they axidently sent me the quote for repair instead of the 3rd party and it was near 3800.

    You need Quattro!

I watched my neighbour try to negotiate his Merc of his driveway this morning, then watched him get stuck, then watched him being pushed back onto the driveway, then he gave up.

I cleared the snow off, got in my car and drove off as normal!

Mind you it doesn't help you stop!

My A3 was hopeless in the snow too, so I used to use the wife's Clio.
My BMW is bad in the snow too, but I expected that.
Of course, you get all the quattro/4x4 smartasses using this as justification for them dragging around 150kgs of unnecessary metal for the other 360 days of the year.

Um, having driven many front and rear wheel drive cars in the rainy, cold conditions we have 50% of the year I would beg to differ.

You can either wheelspin everywhere or go sideways everywhere. And I bet the weight penalty for 4wd over RWD isn't much anyway, certainly not 150kg.

Depends on how much power you have.
In your case, fair enough, you think 265bhp needs quattro, even though there are plenty of more powerful cars without it.
Under 210bhp, quattro certainly isn't necessary for 99% of the year and you're certainly not going to be slithering everywhere.
    I drive a 200bhp car, my colleague drives a 207bhp car.
Both RWD, both putting out considerably more torque than an S3.
Neither of us have traction problems, other than snow.

I checked the weight difference, by the way.
In the case of the 170bhp Tdi, it is exactly 100 kgs difference between 2wd and quattro.
So, their completely unnecessary quattro is akin to having an 18 stone passenger, all the time.

My old E30 Bmw HATED the snow LOL, no toys in it to help either. As said, quattro gives you grip for slopes/hills but wont stop you any quicker.

I was comparing the weight of RWD with 4WD, not FWD. Seeing as they both need a propshaft I doubt there is much in it.

Anyway, as usual this is a pointless discussion.

Presumable Bowfer, you didn't get Quattro because you had DSG and you couldn't have both at the time?

Imagine if you'd spec'd the car the other way around...you'd probably still have it. And you wouldn't be such a hater.

You are correct that you couldn't have both at the same time.
However, that isn't why I didn't go for quattro.
I didn't go for it because I considered it utterly pointless in a 140bhp car.

No, I wouldn't still have it, as its three years were up, regardless of spec.
Would I have enjoyed it more during the three years?
Perhaps, it's certainly a better car with the manual box.

I really don't see what this has got to do with this thread though.
It's gone OT a bit, but still reasonably valid.
That being that this is the only time, IMO, quattro owners can truly justify their purchase.
The rest of the year, as I said, they're driving around with a needless 18 stone passenger.
