Has anyone retrofitted the illuminated interior door handles or have any links to how its done ?

Not heard of it being done but you could probably buy the inserts with the LEDs and take a feed from the electric windows switch.
And I thought it was only me that read what I wanted the sentance to say !

pretty sure you can wire these so they on come on when the interior lights are on

I think that's just a normal disclaimer. But you wouldn't have them lit while driving anyway!
if you wire them to the interior lighting, and when you walk up to your car in the dark and when you unlock your car the interior lights come on and so will them door lights too, but soon as you start the car the lights will go off, abit like the BMW 1 series i think
