Thread: Things You Didn't Know Your A3 Did!

No offence, but who gives a monkeys that each different key remembers the respective driver's climate settings?
You're the only person I know where you/your wife even use different keys!
Everyone I've ever known just uses the one key.
After all, if they're not driving the car, they don't need a key for it!
IMO, these are clever little things for cleverness's sake.
If 99% of people never know it's there, it isn't needed.

Indeed, as a side argument, dual zone climate, in itself, is largely irrelevant.
Can't agree on the same temperature in an 8' x 5' car?
Must cause arguments in one's mono-zone living room then...
I agree with you to a degree about dual zone air-con but it does mean my wife can have warm air coming out of her side vent and I can have cooler air from mine, but the overall temperature will not be effected.

As for keys, my wife always keeps her key to the A3 in her hand-bag. In the past with a much older Audi I have been in the situation where I lost my key whilst we were a long way from home. No problem, Jenny had her key in her bag. It just depends how organised a person you are. We always take both keys whenever we go out. Several of our friends do the same, so I'm certainly not the only one.

If you don't want to know all there is to know about you car then don't bother to read the manuals. If you car is important to you and like me you want to know all about it, then the manual is the place to go. Some people spent every evening watching television. Personally I cannot think of anything worse. As I said, each to his own.

I'm confused about the filler cap thing - i certainly can't work out where it clips on to stop it sitting on the bodywork - someone mentioned it does????

There are two slots in the filler cap itself and these will allow it to hang on the metal filler flap when the flap is open.

If I have to resort to a manual, I get mightily hacked off.
'Perusing' a manual for no particular reason never, ever, crosses my mind.
An Argos book would have more appeal.
Totally agree here - In fact paper based manuals are a total waste and should be banned for the sheer number of people who dont use them (Not going all green but it is one giant waste of paper!)

I stick the filler cap into the handle of the fuel filler to keep the trigger in the on position without having to hold it.

There is a small catch on the trigger that is meant to do this, but it is disabled in UK for some reason...but they work at german fuel stations.

That because it illegal here LOL. They are removed because the cut off is more of an assistance rather than definate safeguard. If the fuel doesn't hit the nozzle at correct speed/angle the pump wont cut off or at least 'burp' fuel out. bummer if its diesel & you are standing right next to it.

May I ask that you stop promoting the user guides h5djr? If anyone was to start reading them, people who do our jobs would be out of work :P

It's peoples lack of intuition and willingness to click the frikking help button that keeps our service desk busy!

Another 'thing you didn't know' (or maybe you did).

My open-sky sunroof on the A3 gets defrosted when you use the button to defrost the rear screen!

No idea, but whenever it was frosty, I used to get out of the car after a short journey and the sunroof was totally defrosted with the rest of it still frozen up. The glass itself was pretty warm in the same way that the heated mirrors was.

Slightly off topic - but where do you store the handbook? The A4 has a slot under the steering column, but the S3 doesn't seem to have any place it fits nicely.

In the passenger side door pocket there's a little lip that keeps it in place towards the back of the pocket.

It was removed to stop the problems of fuel fires started by static sparks. If you have to hold the trigger you stay earthed. Using the lever lock, you can move away from the nozzle, get staticly charged and then spark when getting hold of the nozzle again, this could cause a fire ball with the fumes coming out of the filler neck.

Look on you-tube for forecourt firs and you'll often see the person filling the car moving away from the nozzle whilst filling, and the fire starting when they get back to it.

how cool was that woman when the fire started, I'd have s**t myself

Is it my imagination, or is it only Americans that manage to blow themselves up at petrol stations? I'm sure that bloody nonsense about mobile phones and exploding petrol pumps comes from that region of the world...

It was in my 56 plate A3 too. Just put the whole wallet in the passenger door pocket and push it all the way to the rear and it stays there. It's never once moved out of place.

The Auto headlights come on a set speed, think its 90mph (not that I ever travel that fast )

If you have an electric sunroof, it will automatically shut when it rains (I don't have one to test), but think you need auto wipers.

If you take your foot off the accelerator the car slows down...if you put your foot on the accelerator, it speeds up.... I'll get my coat.

New thing I never noticed with S-Tronic is if you are going downhill and brake and then release the brake pedal, the car will maintain that speed all the way down the slope.

Years ago it was used to signify higher powered versions of certain engines but that was a long time ago before the 8P. Now it just seems you get whatever colour "T" was in the parts bin when the car was made.

    Concert III diagnostic mode

One that is NOT in the manual!

On the Concert III stereo, press and hold the 'Menu' button for 5 secs or so, and the radio will go into a diagnostic mode which will display which tuner you are using, and also display the signal strength!
Press again to return to the normal display
