Brief review of common rail 2.0 TDI 170

Just noticed that Auto Express have done a 'first look' review of the diesel TT, which gets the new common rail 2.0 TDI 170 engine, also destined for the A3 :

No, that will be the old PD engine.

The new 170 CR engine has only just come out. It can be ordered for the TT now, but not for the A3 until November (at least in Europe, anyway).

The PD 170 is a bit of a hybrid however. It has the piezo injectors of a common rail design, but still has the mechanical camshaft driven fuel pumps of the older PD engines. A true CR engine has a very high pressure electric fuel pump feeding all cylinders via a common chamber (hence the term 'common rail').
