Question Ipod connection probs - any ideas?

I've posted the same in the ICE Forum a few days ago but no luck..
Anyone shed any light on this? Cheers.

    __________________________________________________ _____________

I have a Dension iPOD connector that I fitted to my old car (Skoda Fabia) and assumed it would fit my 2008 A3 with the latest Concert headunit.

So I bought the correct stereo removals keys off ebay and went to fit it yesterday. Stereo slid out easily, no problems but I'm scratching my head as my Dension doesn't seem to connect up to the HU.

Mine is pictured below and is marked VW on the back of the Dension unit.
Can anyone tell me if it should fit and point me to a "how to" guide if there is such a thing.

    Cheers.

I assume you've plugged the 12-pin blue square into the spot marked by the X

Then presumably the other end of that same lead runs into the black denison box.

Is the black wire which is holding the cable together connected into the connector on both ends or is the end that should be in the 12pin blue square free? If it is free it is probably an earth so you'd need to find a bolt in behind the head unit and connect it up.

I fitted a Phatnoise Jukebox to my car last year and it hooks in the same way using the CD Changer slot, but the VW\Audi CD Changer harness required an earth which was not available from the blue square. If both ends of the black wire are in the connectors, then you don't need an earth.

    Hope that helps.

Marc if you don't get a 'Thanks' for that post then I'll be annoyed. I have noticed since I have been back that some people have been really going out of their way to help others out but aren't getting the 'Thanks' that they deserve!

Thanks is what separates the forum gurus from the lurkers.

Well I've had my fair share of assistance from some members over the last year and a bit since I bought my second A3, so I think it only fair to offer assistance when I can too.

I'm fitting a front armrest and parrot BT kit to my mate's girlfriend's A3 on Thursday, so I'll be documenting those for reference purposes. He's actually the dude who bought my old A3 off me, so my driveway will look like an audi showroom with three A3s on it!

On mine the slot you show marked with an X was already filled with another blue plug connector so I'm not sure what thats for.
Will have a go and see if the Dension blue connector fits in, but it seems a slighlty different shape IIRC.

The black block plugs into the Dension yes.
Yes the black wire is the earth connection - so hopefully will find a convenient earthing point - or can it be wired into the stereo earth? God knows which wire that will be though!

Thanks for your help - I will give it another go over the weekend.

    Cheers.

Assuming you don't already have a CD changer wired in, I can only assume you have three wires in the existing blue socket (four if you have BOSE). They should be AUX-L, AUX-R and AUX-Ground.

See the top right section of this image for the blue plug. Note that this is an upside down view of the back of the radio.

If you don't have BOSE and your blue connector only has three wires then they are controlling the AUX-IN port next to your handbrake.

If this is the case, then you have two choices:
    1) unplug the existing blue connector and plug the Denison one in
    2) transfer the pins from the denison blue connector into the existing blue one at the back of the head unit. this will allow you to use the Denison and the AUX-IN port.

Wait, just looked at the Denison harness again, and spotted the problem.

The Denison blue connector is actually making up 8 of the 20 pins required for the old Symphony II style connector.

Here it is on its own:

You will need to buy one of these:

    Part number: 1J0 051 445 D (about 8 from your dealer)

You then connect the blue bit from the denison adapter into it like so:

and you should be able to find a bolt in behind the head unit to take an earth off. See the brown wire in the above photo.

You won't have the yellow and green blocks but you should be able to make it fit.

The other end of the above adapter slots into the back of the head unit in the spot I pointed out in my first post like so:

As I said in that last post you will need to make a call on whether or not to transfer the three pins for the AUX-IN from the existing blue block to the one on the end of the new adapter.

I had to do the same procedure when wiring my Phatnoise Jukebox into my Jan07 A3 with Symphony II+ (since been replaced with an RNS-e). I had fitted the same unit to my Jan04 A3 without issue, so when it wouldn't work on the 07 one I went to the dealer to find out if there was a new cable for it. They didn't know, they got on to Audi UK and they didn't know and some dude in Audi Germany took a week to come back with the above adapter. They threw it in FOC for the inconvenience!

Hope the above makes things a little clearer for you.

If you have trouble getting the part, print this post off and show the parts dude the adapter you want, and also see if he can source the green and yellow 6pin blocks to fill out the red end of the adapter.

You are an absolute star mate! Thank you so much.

Yes the blue block on my Dension connector is the same as the one in your picture that plugs into the adaptor.

I will see if I can get the adaptor lead from my local Audi dealer.

    Cheers.

I just re-read you original post and see that you had this unit in your old Fabia. You may well have the remaining bits of that 20-pin connector lying around (green and yellow). How did you have that blue bit hooked into the back of your Fabia's head unit?

The connector just plugged into the back of the head unit in my Fabia. I never had the yellow and green spacer bits although there was space for them to fit come to think of it. It seemed fairly secure without them though.

I used to have some slight interference with the Dension's earth point in my Fabia, so hoping I wont have the same problem in the A3.
I have been advised since to wire the earth up to the stereo earth to stop this from happening, but don't know if this is possible.

Cheers again for your help - much appreciated!

The red end of that new adapter will be the same size as the slot on the back of your Fabia, so it should just slot in the same way then.

I had this same issue on my golf but I then attached the black lead to the stereo casing and then had no issues. Just look for a screw on the back you can attach it to.

Had a quick look around on the net and ebay to see if anywhere sold the connector I need, but look like I will have to go to Audi or VW.

Here is one for 7 + 2.50 shipping. Coming from Poland and they say 3-5 days for delivery.

Probably not going to be any cheaper than your dealer and it doesn't say of it is an OEM part. Having said that, I've bought from them several times before and they are very good.

Yes I shall go to the dealer as difficult to say if that one is OEM.

I need to order some genuine rear mats as well - still think Audi are really tight for not supplying rears, only fronts!

Skodaudi can you edit that post please mate to get rid of all the pictures from Marc's post. It's taking up unecessary space on the board. When you quote someone you don't have to show their entire post.

Must be an Audi UK thing. I got a full set of Audi mats with both my A3s, and a full tank of fuel too.

FYI I have just been in contact with Dension with regards to the compatibility of my Ice-Link plus and the Audi A3 when moving from a VW golf. The cable is fully compatible but needs a firmware update. They have emailed me this and told me how to update it as they are programmed to the headunits. If you mail dension customer support they will send you the files...

    Update:

Fitted this morning and the new lead suggested by MarcQuinlivan works a treat!
I fixed the black earth cable to the headunit by loosening one of the screws on the back of it and securing the wire.

I then loosened the glovebox so I could feed the ipod lead into it and then tightened it back up, so the ipod will live there for the time being.

It charges fine but I can only hear music coming through very faintly and thats on full volume. I suppose this is because I need the firmware update as mentioned above.

I will contact Dension and see how I get on.

    Cheers.
