Yup, that only covers the knob part. It doesnt mention where to tap the power so it comes on and allow brightness/dimming adjustments as the other interior lights as well.

It would be easy to tap into the centre console wiring so the lights dimmed together. Still not sure its quite my 'thing' though!

Picked up my button and console trim piece this morning. Will hopefully get around to fitting it at the weekend. Gonna give hooking it into the start system a miss for a couple of weeks to make sure my ignition fault from last week has gone away. Don't want it to happen again and have them blame the start button.

    Will post pics when complete.

There's easy way about it. I think the whole console needs to come out - i.e. remove armrest, remove gear lever surround, remove grab handles, remove two bolts along passanger footwell, one bollt in driver's footwell, dead pedal, two venty things in driver's footwell, plastic bit under the handbrake, disconnect power from cigarette lighter and bob should be your uncle.

Not got around to it myself yet, but planning on doing it maybe the week after next.

Have you figured out which wire goes to which pin under the connector, or have you been able to source the 8-pin plug that fits into it?

A guy at the bottom of the third page of this post has posted a link to his youtube page and has a video of the S2000 start button in his TT (http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=HNDz2flw4Po), so I'm hoping he will be able to provide some notes on which wires control the ignition system.

Damn! Sounds like more work than I initially thought Popping out the gearlever surround is easy...there has to be an easier way to lift the console without having to remove all those other bits and bobs. Cigarette lighter also pops out quite easily...need to get some ETKA drawings.

Yeah, I've had both of those out while fitting my Nokia 610 button. Unfortunately the existing tray needs to be removed so you can slot the new one in and I can't see any other way to gain access without removing the console.

I can advise on start button as I have started to install mine, not wired yet, but it fits perfectly in the a3 where the cig lighter is, it comes as the one unit with cig lighter, the start button is removable from the one unit you buy, you have to buy the as we know repair yellow wiring kit for it, which is basically a plug & then you cut the 4 wires in half to give you the 8 wires with pins on the end, you then insert these into the supplied plug, you do have to use the key to turn to the 1st position, then you start the car with the button, no way round this, key must be used, its more of an audi cop out of full start button with keyless start on the rs4, but still looks good.

Centre console will have to be taken out so you can uncrew the existing cig lighter unit & screw new start button/cig lighter unit in place.

Note, when fitting, take the start button out of the unit & leave it out until wiring done & tested or you will have to remove the console again to get to the start button wiring as you clip start button in place & cant remove without damaging from the top anyway.

Even if its just a bling thing, it definitely looks cool & when wiring done which will I'm assuming would be just a relay switch to start running in parallel with existing start wires so key still works ok starting, then it will be a cool mod I reckon, if I can get it working on the a3 dsg tdi, that is, lol.

Do you have the part number for the repair wires? There are several types.

When you say insert the 4 wires cut in half into the supplied plug, do you mean the pins on the underside of the button housing, or did you manage to source the 8-pin connector that slots into the button?

Have you managed to work out what each of the eight pins is for?

Do you have pics of the install?

I will see if I can get the part numbers, just gotta find the invoice 1st mate, lol.

You get 4 wires with pins on either end, you have to cut these in half to make 8 wires, you then get the seperate new empty plug & insert the 8 wires with pins into that plug, then this plug then pushes into the underside of the start button, so its not a direct wired into start button, theres a socket on the underside of start button for the plug to insert/remove whenever you want.

But to get to this when its pushed into place is a *****, so dont fit start button until its wired & tested 10 times.

That sounded like a ramble but at least its clear to all, I think.

    Thanks.

I already have the start button and ashtray panel, but have been holding off on fitting it until I get the connectors and some idea of what wire goes where.

If you have the part numbers I can order them from my local dealer tomorrow and hopefully have them on Friday. I'm off work on Monday so was planning to tackle the install then. Even if I only get the button and lighter installed with the connector and wires I can refit the console and run the wires down to the driver's side footwell (making sure to label them 1-8 obviously).

Really all I am interested in at the moment is getting the stuff fitted and the lights hooked in. I'll wait for one of you braver chaps to tinker with the ignition circuit to find where you hook it in before trying it myself!

You mean the lights on the button?

The wires are specific to that start button mate, just awaiting my parts guy to ring me back with part numbers, but if you got the start button already they can easily match the wires in etka within 2 minutes easily fella, there arent anyothers for it, I'll update when I have.

Cig lighter is straight swap with wiring so thats cool, I need to do the trace on the circuit board to see how that pans out, but 1st I am gonna do my retro flat bottom mfsw today, ordered parts so see what happens, was gonna use happy dayz but he hasnt responded as yet, we'll see.

I might touch up that german guy for his wiring save us all time & hassle(that sounds worse than its meant, lol, trust me straight as a ruler, lol)

Yeah, the illumination of the "Engine Start" text and the ring around the button.

I have the start button so can play around with putting an earth and a 12v+ onto each combination of 2 pins to see which ones control the lighting.

Had a look in ETKA but couldn't find the wiring notes for the button.

Not to worry, I'll just wait to see what you've done.

I also emailed that german dude, but heard nothing back. There's another guy who has posted about an LED DIY on another thread who has a video of the S2000 start button in a TT, so I asked him how he wired it in, but have not heard back either.

    Hey Nigel!

I havn't had the time yet mate...infact I have also been waiting for the harness to wire up the START button for illumination. I have neen wanting to fit my OSIR dead pedal but have held back after Marc mentioned that the oem dead pedal would have to be removed in order to fit the START button. Please provide us with part number for the harness as that would greatly help all of us doing this mod

Was just going to make the same point.

If your car is LHD you don't need to remove the dead pedal. Us RHD folk have the dead pedal along the centre console.

From the photo it looks as if it is LHD:

Remove the dead pedal to fit the start button, why would you need to do that, wiring runs along console, up through the back of the rns-e cavity over across into the cavity under steering wheel, dead pedal shouldnt have anything to do with this mate, but I will double check as in middle of doing my flat bottom mfsw upgrade at moment, of all things to be broken the bloody new mfsw control module from audi, spent 2 hours resoldering these tiny damn pins on to the pcb, aaarrrggghhhhh, well pissed about it, new one on route but car sat in bits until tomorrow.

Anyway let me dig out the invoice as parts guy sent me the etka drawing but without the wiring part numbers, trust me he is good but brighton audi is having refit so he's under the kosh at moment.

    Watch this space.

The S2000 button is wired in differently to the RS4 one it seems. There are only 3 wires on the plug. 1 is the earth, and the other 2 to a 12V relay. The relay then connects to a permanent live and the live ignition wire. The ignition wire is under the steering housing trim which needs to be removed. (on the TT) This wire is only live when you turn the key to start the car (good way of testing). On my car this wire was red with a black stripe. Hope that helps you guys out Looking forward to the end result.

You need to remove the centre console to get at the underside of it so you can remove the existing tray and fit the new tray and start button. From what I remember the dead pedal is in the way on RHD cars, so needs to be removed.

Have you fitted your tray yet? If so, were you able to do it without removing the console?

I suspect the RS4 switch is somewhat similar - even though it has 8 pins.

2 of these will be to control the illumination. The other 6 then presumably control the starter and some sort of mechanism to check if the engine is running so as to disable the button. I assume that to turn the engine off you need to turn the key.

Yes the engine is turned off with the key. Does the RS4 button have a start-stop facility? I didn't think it did.

Its as Marc says, start only, dont worry havnt forgotten the wiring part numbers, I have called today as he is the only guy there & they are literally demolishing the old place which is why its taking alot longer than normal.

But MFSW Flat Bottom works a treat, looks cool, love it lol.

Oh I see yeah what you mean now, what a nonce, apologies, I thought he had already fitted the tray, sorry, yeah I believe you do have to remove the dead pedal, but its like 10 seconds job man nothing serious.

Yes my tray is in & the rs4 button is sitting in the cubby hole under armrest ready to wire up, need to do some meter checks on wiring on pcb, I suspect its just driving relays that have the higher ampage circuits on cause start button wouldnt take the current for starting the car as would probably burn the tracks on the pcb no???

Any link for this pedal yet??????

Already fitted mate myself, thanks anyway, I was chatting with Matt on phone other day & last night swapping info about our mods, problem I had was the control module had some broken pins, replaced today & all sorted, worked last night when I did the repair with my soldering iron, just need to do the steering angle sensor calibration now, then she's done ready for my next mod.

All that clever stuff is done by the master engine ECU on the RS4 - all the Start button does is connect to a pin on that, and it's the ECU that decides if the engine is running or not and how long to try to start the engine for. Starting the engine is done by pressing the button for a fraction of a second - the ECU does the rest.

Hey Dave, mfsw fitted with dual stage airbag, must pick up one of the airbag circuits as no errors, faults nothing, all systems go, coded mfsw, all works great so no need for cangate now, also just need to enable the sds 0660 hack when I can find a suitable disc to write on & we're of.

That osir pedal seems to be for the Golf range then mate, if the fixings internally are same, be ok I hope, TT shop isnt showing anything really, is there a email for osir?
