    2.0TDI appalling fuel consumption?!

I know petrol/diesel prices have gone up recently but I have recently noticed that my Ł25/week is not getting me my usual 200 miles a week.
    More like 140-150...
I'm sure I should be getting more than that!

Ł25 a week is approx 21.5 litres (based on Ł1.16 per litre)
    Which is 4.7 gallons.
    150 divided by 4.7 is 32 mpg.
Yes, that is poor for a 140tdi.

    I'm getting approx 500 miles to a Ł60 fill up in my 200bhp D3.
    That's 51 litres, or 11 gallons.
    So approx 45mpg.
    Not too shabby.

sorry, what I mean't was you cannot work out fuel consumption based on the value of the fuel, you need to look at the actual litres put into the tank. The 3p was just a figure I used, so if when you filled up petrol was 114.9 per litre then the next time it was 117.9 its not exactly the best way to work out MPG as you are not buying the same amount of fuel, I was in too much of a rush to get me dinner !!!

It doesn't make that much difference, when dealing with such low figures as Ł25 worth of fuel.
I worked it out, based on Ł1.16 a litre, that he's getting 32mpg.
If you go to Ł1.18, or even Ł1.20, a litre, it's still roughly 32mpg, maybe 33mpg.
So it's still poor, no matter what he's paying.

    that is terrible mpg

get your deisel filter changed, new oil, maybe new air filter and some deisel treatment

You should see upwards of 45mpg regularly

Hmmm, I found a regular 45mpg pretty hard to achieve.
    Low 40's at best.
I do appear to be achieving 45mpg in my D3 though, with 60bhp more.
Driving it the same way, for sure.
Running in went out of the window long ago.
The only difference, I can fathom, is that I'm using part-throttle more in the D3.
I don't have to put the foot down, like I did the A3.
Which makes sense, given the extra power/torque.
This must be why people report better mpg after a remap.
    Same principle.
    Less throttle for same result.

I highly doubt all that is needed on an 06 TDI?

Recently mine has fallen into the same mpg, which is disappointing and surprising. This has been with BP fuel so I might switch to another BP station and test it to see if the other station is ripping me off.

    I topped up Ł25 @ 1.15/litre and got 170 miles - insane! I usually get 200-300 (mixture of motorway/towns).

Thanks people. I just don't know wether I should be going to Audi just yet.
To be fair, I have been doing quite a bit of town/country roads driving recently. Still, 32 mpg from a diesel is appaling- I really don't drive it hard!!

Got 691 miles out of mine the other week! Was so close to 700 that I've reluctantly set myself a challenge! lol

Average MPG 62+ and do a stupid amount of motorway miles.

Sat, try another petrol station as well. That's what I am doing as this has happened to me as well and I can't find anything to explain why except the possibility of the station ripping me off.

34 ish from mine - it's been pants for about the last 12 months, but then there's been so many other issues in that time that the fuel consumption was merely another one.

Bowfer, as our co. car list is derived from the Emox published figures, and then put through some kind of company grading mangler, pound for pound the 3-series are looking very attractive when I come to toss in my A3.... Do you know if either of the BM 2.0 diesels responds well to chipping - something I haven't done with my A3. My thought is, that potentially I could take a 320d SE, or, drop to the 3188d but M-sport spec.

Appreciate your views (and no, our car lists are a bit weird - for example, the Tiguan is coming in about 3 grades higher than A3 2.0TDI sport, so there is no Alpina ability...

Mine was the same was getting 47 mpg until I took it for first service at 17000 miles and 2 new tyres on front , mpg immediately dropped to 40mpg and remains at that level. Have had it back twice , garage have checked everything and on contacting Audi they have been told it falls within the limits so everything ok . No explanation why a car can lose 7mpg overnight. I have found DIS 2 to be very acurate, eg within 1mpg of calculated figure brim to brim. All very annoying.

I posted a similar question about 6 weeks ago, saying that a lot of Audi owners thought they were great cars until they went for their first service and then their mpg for no reason dropped vastly, these people I had spoken to stated it was well known fact but no one on this forum had heard of it

  28. #27
I'm on holiday in the north of Scotland at the moment and pottering around, mostly at 50-60mph and I am getting 53mpg from my 170. When driving normally my average is around 43-45mpg. I used to get aound 46-48mpg from my 140 with similar driving. My car will be due for it's first service soon, so it will be interesting to see what happens after then.

The 320D can be chipped to 205bhp.
The 318D can be chipped too, to around 180bhp, I believe.
    Personally, I'd rather have a 318D M-sport, than a 320D SE.
I think the 320 needs the M-sport spec to look good, minimum.
    I can't see you being disappointed with a 180bhp 318D M-sport.
In fact, it might be quite fun.
People will think 'ha, lowly 318D', then get a shock when you plant the foot.
Either should be good for your company car tax.
I believe both are now under 130g/km, because of the stop/start technology.
My Alpina doesn't use that, so it's still up at the 156 g/m mark.
Which means I pay around 3% more tax than a normal 320D driver.

Does make you wonder about the longevity of the battery, starter motor and solonoid with this stop/start technology.

As it is under warranty I'd get it back to an Audi dealer ASAP for it to be checked. I'd say temp sensor or MAF at a guess, assuming tyre pressures etc are all ok.

Do about 1,000miles a week with work, and comfortably get 47-49MPG reguarly. I 'brim' the tank when i refill, and so thats 550miles before the light comes on. If I am light footed i can get it above 50mpg.

In terms of dropping the MPG after servicing, could it be that the computer hass been reset? I know the cars 'learn' your driving style and effect the response. Maybe there is a bedding in period or something that is cancelled at the first service (maybe I am just talking crap though! ).
Any spelling/ grammatical errors are there purely to annoy!

    Intersesting ......

Our 2.0 Tdi is getting 40 ~ 45 mpg which i think is rubbish. The only thing i can blame is the GF and her heavy right foot.

I was begining to think there is something wrong with it. It does a lot of varied driving but how can a diesel be so sensitive to driving unless it's the 16valves?

My 130PD 1.9Tdi does 50 even when flogged hard?

Our DIS1 read whatever it feels like and tends to settle on how you drive it for first 10 mins.

DIS2 is reading approx 49mpg which i think is a little generous.

i checked last night by brimming tank and checking against miles 42mpg !!!! that didn't please me

I had a GOLF MK4 PD-150 before and that use to do about 50-60 mpg at around 70 mph and didn't hardly use oil from service to service, But now my AUDI A3 does about 40-45 mpg at the same speed and always topping up with oil (it might be due to the long life oil??????).

I thought my A4 used long life oil too?
I could be mistaken, it was 3 years ago.
    Anyway, your findings mirror mine.
There is a lot of evidence that the 2.0tdi is far less efficient than the 1.9tdi, with far more variable oil usage in the process.
One can only assume why, but it has to be either a basic design flaw or build quality/tolerance issues.

I can easily achieve mid to high 40's on a motorway run. A couple of weeks back I tried to see how high I could get it on a run from Dunstable to Daventry and I achieved 58mpg!!! Granted I was driving at 55~60 on the motorway but I was well chuffed for a remapped 170 Q.

As far as oil goes, I'm coming to 5k miles and it hasn't lost a drop!

My Bluefinned 140 averages about 47-48mpg at the moment. That's not from the DIS, but me working it out everytime I fill up. Just passed the 9k mark.
