    Can the A3 2.0TDI 140 be increased to 200BHP?

    Hi guys,

I've came to face up to the fact it looks like I'm keeping my A3 for the long run (not the wrost thing that could happen). I'm wanting to tune it to keep my interest up in it and keep a smile on my face!!

I was just wondering would the 140 be able to reach 200 with various mods?

The age old tuning argument about which companies, I'm not going to start again, I'm thinking Bluefin or Revo, leaning more towards Revo (185). But like I say wanting to find out if you can some how get near the 200 mark.

    Thoughts please guys.

    Cheers

    Jay

Lots of remaps to choose from, but you wont see much more than 185 unless you upgrade the turbo.

If you're really serious take a look at this link - it has been posted before, but shows what you can get with some serious upgrades.

The Allard phase 2 upgrade which is a remap and intercooler will get you close to the magic 200 figure.

I've got a Bluefin unit and I'm very pleased with it. The price has been reduced on these as well recently (I think), so with a 10% forum discount you should be able to get it for around the 450 mark.

Wow, checked that like there Jon, that's some serious mods but don't think I've got the kind of cash to do all that.

Glad to hear goods things about the Bluefin also seen the Revo for 499.99 and the switchable version for additional 149.99.

Steve do you have the switch to change maps?

I know a guy in Poland whoose A3 2.0 TDI has 220 HP BUT ... it`s a lot to do serious modification new big turbo, better intercooler, new exhaust, brake upgrade and stronger clutch is a must. Reaching that power just by remap will ruin the engine quite fast. If you want to do it it`s possible I`ve seen it done but only by serious and expensive modyfication not cowboy`s remap and like somebody said it must be quattro really A3 is far to light for that sort of power and torque to be FWD.

Although Revo is good. Dont go for the free test!!! I have read in another thread that if you do not go for the upgrade, when the free trial reverts back to the "original" mapping, the power will be less than what you started with. They have Dyno the car after the free trial and its about 5% less than original stock.

This was also verbally confirmed by my local Revo dealer and that is why they do not offer the free trial.

If you want a trial ask for a ride in a member's car!!

My understanding of this, is that the `lost` power is a result of the adaptive ECU returning to factory settings and the power returns after the ECU re-learns your driving style (usualy quite aggessive if youre in the market for a remap) wich takes around 50-100miles.
After such time your car is back to how it was before the trial.
Its worth speaking to REVO direct on this as they are very helpful. 01327 301901

Anyway, dont bother with the trial, mine lasted all of 2 mins and I went back for the full programme. You will definately want it, so if you do decide on the trial, make sure you have your wallet with you!

    Good luck.

Our A3 2.0TDI is currently running 212bhp and 301ftlb. Mods are a panel filter, hybrid turbo and a Custom Code Phase 2 remap. The turbo is probably capable of more but as the exhaust, intercooler etc.. are standard we didn't want to push it too much.

WOW, that sounds out standing. From what I've heard from the few that have given opinions, (thanks for that btw), I'm really thinking Revo is the way to go without a doubt.

Has anyone with Revo got the switchable maps, what is the deal with those?

I think the turbo inc. fitting would be around 1k (maybe a bit more) and the map would be on top of that. It was more on ours as we only changed the turbo because the old one broke. When the RAC turned up to recover the car my Wife told them she thought the turbo had gone but they still decided to start it up and rev the engine. This meant the labour we paid was alot more than just fitting as all the bits of the turbo had to be found and removed from the exhaust, boost pipework, intercooler, etc... We also did the cambelt and water pump at the same time. It drives really well now though and I would highly recommend it to those looking for more than just a map. Also of course the car still looks completely standard which is an added bonus.

    Can the A3 2.0TDI 140 be increased to 200BHP?

An interesting question. Of course it can. Almost any engine of realistic cubic capacity could. The more sensible question is whether it can operate at these levels reliably given the original design specification of the engine components and the peripherals that surround it.

How much of a gain would there be from just a remap for the time being?

    a) There isn't a trial on the diesel and there never has been
    b) Therefore the 'information' about not reverting to stock is utter toss
    c) Which dealer told you this? I'll get Revo HQ to talk quietly to him

My PD140 is remapped up to 203bhp and 290lb ft with no additional changes to the car. It could have been higher, but the fuel consumption went WAY down and it smoked a bit, so we left it at 203bhp. However I use the standard map most which gives 190bhp and 300lb ft, in my opinion the torque figure is the most important, its the one that gives you excellent in-gear performance.

Nice one, having a look on the site just now, switchable via VAG-COM which I have so that sounds cool.

Can it be removed for service time do you know, can't find anything on the site just now?

most generic remaps will give you about 275-285 hp plus lots of torque - you can remap to approx 200hp as stated above, and at this point the turbo is spinning pretty quickly - whether it will reduce its life, who knows? - ive tried a few different remaps and its very hard to tell the differences between for power, although drivability and throttle responses are quite different.

there is no more air to be had after this from the standard turbo so any more fuel in will just make smoke.

a turbodynamics md376 hybrid is a bolt-on option for about 1000 for the turbo, and you would need a remap to use this - some suggest a de-cat downpipe and exhaust will help keep the exhaust gas temperatures down (probably a good idea) - so for about 2000 to 2300 you will get anywhere between 220-230-240hp but it holds the torque a lot higher, so pulls easily to the redline without feeling its out of breath - a completely different driving experience (so im told).

allard do a vt2 turbo which is similar spec and they confidently claim 220hp for similarish money.

next stage is a much bigger turbo, but its not bolt-on. you need an exhaust manifold, different oil and compressed air lines and a custom downpipe (although if you were replacing the downpipe/cat and exhaust as in hybrid turbo above then theres no extra cost) - this is good for 250-260hp on standard injectors and thats the max fuel you can get into the engine without changing injectors (1000) or adding propane.

the pd140 intercooler is fine for this, but your clutch may not be. a DSG box can actually handle about 405lb/ft torque reliably so the 360-370lb/ft from either of the turbo upgrades isnt going to break it as long as the mapping keeps the torque to these kinds of figures - the bigger power turbo is simply a result of holding the torque higher up the revs range.

Cheers for that mate but what I'm wanting is one that I can put on and take off during services times. (Although sometimes I think is it worth it because as I mentioned I'll have the car the the long term anyways). But what mikep said about just over 200BHP just on Revo stage 2 is got me wanting haha!

No worries. Why do you want to take it off during service times?
If your Audi's under warranty, you might wanna check if it actually invalidates it, or if the dealers/techs can see the remap?

That's a fair comment, still got 2 years warranty yeah. It's also the fact that 'touch wood' I'm involved in an accident and the insurance company see the remap, game over, they won't pay out!

As others have suggested, power delivery must differ between a simple remap and changing hardware.
Alpina, to get 200bhp from the BMW 320 engine, have changed the turbo, the injectors and the exhaust.
Why bother, when they could have simply remapped it?
You can buy maps that take a standard 320D to 205bhp, after all.
According to them, the hardware changes make the power delivery better.
I haven't driven a remapped 320D to compare, but I can tell you the Alpina revs to the redline very quickly indeed, in a very petrol-like manner.
None of the breathlessness you usually get at the top-end of a diesel's range.
