Owning an Audi was a dream that has turned into a nightmare

thought some more about it after i logged off! I know you have last owners details , i would make the call , nothing to lose - especially when you put it top them your not after anything but help "one audi nut to another" .
when you sell a car to a trader IIRC they fill in the red slip so that for the time it is in the traders possession it does not acrue another owner on the log book. it is possible 'daves body shop' had it on the red slip before selling it onto carcraft/third party whom then had it in their name on the red slip. However , to do this the V5 would have had to go back to Swansea for a new V5/red slip to be issued.
I know you can pay £5 for the list of previous owners/keepers , i dont know if 'traders' whom never had the V5 in their name (just the red slip) would show up on the print out from DVLA though.
worth a punt !? might just prove carcraft knew exactly what was going on.
even if the V5 check comes to nothing the previous keeper might give you a name of a body shop/third party it was sold onto.Someone/somewhere will probably (hopefully) have the proof that it was sold to Carcraft with them in full knowledge of its previous history. :eyebrows:
 
what if a salesman at a garage has had it as his company car and smashed it? maybe?
 
I think you have a case here and you have been played with....

Do not judge Audi in general for this case. Audi is a good brand with some problems but overall is a reliable and good brand if somewhat expensive.

I am fortunate to have a trouble free car but other reported some problems that, when compared to yours, are tiny little details...

I would investigate further the history of your car... Have you considered asking to replace the car for a similar model/year/mileage? If they are a used car supermarket they should have other Audis same model of yours..... Just a thought.

Also if they say that your car is fine then they should have no problems exchanging it for an identical one... as a goodwill gesture?

Another question, the previous owner had a personalised number plate. i have a vehicle check report here showing the original number plate. Would that make any difference to the vehicle check?
 
Man i dont know wether this is getting worse or better! I just got off the phone to DVLA and they confirmed that there were 2 previous owners before me. Carcraft told me there was 1!

Personally i wouldnt do a thing , especially covertly record conversations - might not be able to be presented as evidence when it comes to it.
Go through your local yellow pages and look for a solicitor who specialises in trade description/sales etc and get your free half hour comsulatation. As good as your solicitor might be , one whom specialises in criminal law/matrimonial cases etc wont be as good as a specialist. Do nothing other than seek EXPERT advise!
Only thing i would do is if you have the original Index number is do your own HPi check , maybe contact Audi and they will/should be able to give you the Index by way of inputting chassis number.Did you buy it with personnal plate or private ? What did they do the HPI(if they did one) aginst ?
As previous , Solicitor is expert so will tell you what evidence you need and how to gather it so it can be presented as such if and when you go to court.
On the face of it i would say your position has strengthened tenfold in 24 hrs from intel gained , hang on in there and get it sorted.

Yes u are right, i think i am saying things out of anger more than anything. I know my priority is to gather as much info as possible.

Iv got the car booked in to a body shop next week, they will look for any signs of accident damge. I have also asked DVLA to double check their records to make sure there is no mistake on their behalf.

I have a friend of a friend who will do a full HPI check for me i spoke to him today so that will get done in the week.

I bought the car with the registered (original) number plate. Looking at the vehicle check they did it says, recorded against VRM and VIN
 
And to speak the obvious , keep bills/receipts for EVERYTHING ie bodyshop/HPI etc etc etc - once resolved you WILL be claiming the costs back wont you :icon_thumright:
I am slightly confused - DVLA say two previous owners ? what does V5 show ? Pay them the £5 and get a print out of previous recorded keepers.
Still think it might be worth contacting Audi for a service shedule . What does the Service History say ? Two different main Dealer stamps from opposite ends of country *might* loosely indicate different owners.
Lots of circumstantail evidence that can be built up 'gratis'/cheap to add weight to any deffinitive proof.

I am slightly confused

The V5 shows 2 former keepers which i thought included me. When i contacted DVLA they said that is 2 registered keepers BEFORE me. It also says the previous owner aquired the vehicle on the 12/07/05 but the date of first registration is 11/02/04

Looking at the service record, it has had 4 services all at the same place, west london audi.
 
I bought it from carcraft (the uk's leading used cars hypermarket!!) for £11500. 68000 miles on the clock, 1 owner full service history (aparently)
The AA inspector told me to reject it. i tried that and failed...

Do we have proof of this statement ?
68k miles and only 4 stamps ? Im no expert but wouldnt you expect a post delivery stamp + maybe 1 every 10k miles ? I dont know about newer Audis but our last 'new' (99 plate) had 10k service intervals.If the two addresses are not in West London it can be reasonable to expect it not to have a FSH.
Although i am just a 'lay person' on the face of things it looks like you have a pretty strong case , just a case of getting a solicitor whom specialises in trading law to collate all the evidence and put it in a well greased envelope :laugh:
He will probably be able to advise you has to requesting the file that Carcraft holds on your car, or indeed do it himself . Having a full copy of it will only strengthen your case ( copy of 'sale' schedule " 1 owner + FSH blah blah blah" . Multiple refusals to supply said file(s) to your brief will add weight to your claim in court as it will appear they have something to hide.
Aswell as body shop/alignment etc fees start collecting every bus/train/taxi receipt you have ever incurred from today - i am 99.9% sure that you will be able to claim these back.

I dont have any proof of that statement although, there is some paperwork with stuff the actual salesman wrote, i will check in the morn. but rest assured i was told 1 owner from new and a FSH.

As for the service shedual can anyone else shed some light on this pls?
 
I phoned trading standards and TBH the person i spoke to didnt have time for me, i also tried citizens advice and the old lady that dealt with me there couldnt even operate her computer lol. As silly as it sounds, its true.

Update....

I took the car to a body shop this morning. The guy had a quick look at the car then test drove it. He then looked underneath, he said there were no obvious signs of accident damage, none that he could see anyway but he was more concerned with the engine.

I told him i had the engine replaced and why, when i told him where the engine was replaced he had a weary look on his face. He told me to try and track down where the engine came from because the garage that did the work cannot be trusted and he didnt believe the engine they put in had done 20000 miles like they said.
He also said that they shouldnt have put a second hand engine in under warranty, it should have been a reconditioned one.
 
Engine number on 'older' VAG group dervs are (as your looking at injectors) under/between the 3rd + 4th injector stamped onto a flat face machined onto the block -anyone on here know where it would be on this one ?.
Get engine number and try DVLA again - should be able to cross reference against a V5 (hopefully) from that should be able to get chassis number , from that you can HPI the chassis number for mileage.
As previous , get PROFESSIONAL help on this (not a load of forum lawyers) .IMHO Dont do anything/speak to anyone that could jepodise your position BUT get as much info/proof as possible to strengthen your case when you speak to a solicitor.

Bought an A3 TDI 2.0 '03 plate from used car dealer but new shape on Jan 14th. Didn't know about porous cylinder head issues on these early tdi models at this time (see my other posts) 2 weeks later, oh sh1t, coolant leak. Dealer tested it. Couldn't find cause. Has been in used dealers "approved" garage 3 times since because coolant continued to leak.

Eventually took it to Bristol Audi who were quite good and who listened to me (albeit for a price) and found it to be the cylinder head. This will costs thousands to replace and I am currently trying to get the dealer to pay up because the leak has been there since buying it.

In addition the cam belt hadn't been changed at 80k miles and I bought it at 87k. I should have picked up on this but the dealer I got it from agreed to "go halves" on the cam belt,tensioners and water pump change.

The f@ckwits at the garage the used car dealer uses didn't replace with G12+ coolant when changing the cambelt (and I wonder if they bothered testing the leak properly) I worry if they carried out cambelt change fully/properly and I might get Audi to look (expensively) at that when doing cylinder head change.

I phoned Consumer Direct who were quite helpful. They said the car should be sold in a satisfactory condition, and if not I should be entitled to repair/refund or replacement. They told me to write a letter to dealer headed with re: Sale of goods act (that act mentioned in posts above) and explain the situation. Dealer has wrote back saying "we will look at coolant again, we're sorry, we tried to help you etc." but no reply to the 2nd letter telling them it was found to be the cylinder head (early days yet though). If this dealer doesn't pull their finger out I will be on the phone to consumer direct again. The first letter was written and applied to within 3 months (The timespan for the automatic warranty for any car bought from a trader)

I will fight this all the way and I think the dealer is aware although I haven't written any threatening letters. Just polite and assertive ones. I will wait for them to respond as I cannot say they have been complete @rseholes yet and it might have been the previous owner who was dodgy. Thinking about contacting BBC Watchdog because only last week they were on about car companies being out of order not replacing defective parts even if no longer under warranty.

I want to believe Audi is a good make. "Vorshrung Durck Technik" or whatever. I think that although we have both been unlucky, the cylinder head problem apparently shouldn't really happen even if out of warranty and no longer occurs in newer models.

People have said that the moral of the story is: Don't buy second hand and if you have to, use a dealership.

Mate, I realise my situation is quite different from yours and, by the sound, more comprehensive, but I hear you. Haven't read every post above because in a hurry but have you tried consumer direct?

This is the reason I buy relatively cheap, but new, cars for the wife.
She's always asking if we can get a better, but used, car for the same dosh.
I keep saying yes, of course we can, but no warranty....
That usually changes her mind.

Sorry to hear that. Dont give up and keep appliying the pressure! I have and things are starting to turn in my favour. Doesnt matter wether the car is second hand you still have rights because the car should be free of any defects especially serious ones.

If the dealer is "fobbing you off" get an independant inspection like i did because it has worked wonders for me and although it cost £200 i will be looking to get compensated for it.

You can reject the car for up to 12 months after purchase but if i were you and if i was not getting anywhere with the dealer i would reject it asap. If you reject a car in the first 6 months the onus is on the dealer to prove the car was defect free at point of purchase. If you reject it after the 6 months the onus is on you to prove the car was faulty at the time of purchase.

How did you pay for the car? was it finance?
 
just refuse to pay for the car and buy another one. They will be quick enough to come for it then.

Beleive me, ive bought 15 cars on finance, over the last 25 years, just dump it and they will be forced to pick it up or abandon it. Buy one NOW before your credit file is damaged, then pay that one, blocking the bad car finance company from blackening your credit history, besides, cars dont show up on credit searches by experian and equifax.

OR leave it in the rough end of town, so it gets stolen / burned then GAPped, full payout and new car for you...
