Odd regular 'clunk' from left of steering column

    Hi all,

Last night got in my car to go home from work and there was a very regular (once every 5 seconds os so) 'clunk' or 'knock' from what appeared to be the left of the steering column lower dash. It wasn't that loud but could be hard above the stereo.
I thought it might be a stuck air vent or something like that so I had a play with the vent controls but nothing changed.
By the time I got home the noise had stopped and no sign of it this morning.
Just wondered if anybody else had heard this or had an idea of what it was.

    Cheers,
    Andy

Aircon clunks as things open\close or expand\contract I believe - heard it on all A3's I've driven.

used to it now but any "new" passenger seems to remark on it

Same here - first thought it was the CD changer, but even does it occasionally without any CDs....
