Turbocharging a 1.6 sportback

Hi all,

Any ideas as to what can be done regarding turbocharging a 1.6 engine?

I know most of you will ask why and say get a TDi etc. but I have a 1.6 now and won't be changing cars for a coupla years.

Any companies out there selling kits that can be fitted on?

Would i be able to, for example, stick on a 2.0T turbo kit in the 1.6 engine? if not what sorts of changes would be necessary?

Would be cheaper and easier in the long run to sell the 1.6 and buy back the same model with a better engine. 2.0TFSI or TDI.

Is there a reason not to sell?

well, got the car end of last year, and it is financed. if i sell it now, i'll probably lose a lot through depreciation, although i may get a good buy-back/trade-in deal if i went to the same dealer.

Any suggestions as to how it would work if i wanted to sell a car that hasn't been paid off yet? or to trade-in for another? would i just refinance?

adding a turbocharger to a n/a car will totally destroy its resale value too. Just walk into the dealers and say you want something faster, they'll then try to screw you over! But if you really push hard you might be able to walk away with a half decent deal. Its worth seeing what they can do for you anyway.

I can't imagine how boring a 1.6 sportsback might be!

Those financing guys want your business and they will figure it all out for you.... You just have to pay in the end...

Although I am a big fan of engine swaps, I would suggest to stay away from it unless you have a whole lot of money to blow and a 2nd car (your car will be with a "specialist" for the coming month or two). To top that all off, even if the swap is problem free, you will need to spend more money on suspension, wheels etc. to make your car more balanced...

If the 1.6 is your 2nd car and you are looking into building the ultimate 1.6T with 300hp...that is another story...

and brakes, clutch, gearbox etc etc. And if you're worried about depreciation now that's nothing compared to when you try & sell a 3 year old A3 with that sort of "upgrade".
Trade it in for a 2 year old 2.0T and it shouldn't cost you much if anything.

possible it is.... but apart from being expensive... like someone said when it comes to resale no one will touch your car...

A turbo conversion can cost around £3k-£5k... so is up to you if you think it is worth it...

Also To get serious hp from a turbo conversion you are going to need ECU upgrade, Exhaust upgrade, intercooler, probably new injectors... all the engine needs to be tuned/upgraded accordingly...

With the money spent... if you trade in the 1.6 you can get a 2.0T probably...

Seriously... not worth it... and maximum power output would be around 150hp... nothing spectacular...

Thanks for the input, i have been looking around online at the local dealers and for a 2.0T that's 1-2 years old, I'll be paying around 5000 pounds (NT$ 300 000) more.

I guess that's the way to go if a turbo kit will add up to as much as you guys say.

I'd also wonder what the finance company would have to say about you heavily modfiying a car which essentially belongs to them until you pay in full? - May be a load of twoddle but I was under the impression cars on finance and PCP or whatever couldn't be modified?

Good point, but i don't think that it matters in Taiwan. When I bought the car, I spoke to the dealer about body kits and suspension kits etc, and he was more than willing to tell me more and even introduce me to some people, without ever mentioning that it would not be allowed....

anyway, after looking for more info and thinking hard about it, I guess my needs vs. my wants are telling me that i don't really NEED anything more than a 1.6. I drive in cities 95% of the time and hardly reach more than 60kph! It's just feeling of having a powerful and fast car gets me WANTING!

Although to be honest, the mileage I'm getting from the 1.6 isn't that impressive, even when i'm driving like a granny! Diesel seems very attractive now!
