Went through an underpass earlier today and noted how the backlit dials turned off about 5 secs of being in the dark (with the lights off)

anyone know how to leave them on permanently?

I got my dealer to set mine as 'always on' before I collected my car.

Mine just has the needles lit. A total nonsense straight out of the factory....

If you go into "17 - Instruments" and then select "07 - Coding" the last digit controls the instrument lighting.

Mine has just needles lit (which I think is a 7). You can change the values from 0 to 9. I think 0-4 is for US and 5-9 EU.

The options are (I think) :
0/5 No Lighting
1/6 Back Lighting
2/7 Needles
3/8 Both
4/9 ?

You can do a bit of trickery with VAG-COM.

you can have nothing lit, needles only, backlit only, all lit.

what's VAG-COM??

I thought there was something wrong with my instrument cluster! Although my does it when going under thick coverage of trees!

apparently it dims to remind you to put your lights on when it gets dark
