    Extended Warranty - Warranty Direct

Just got off of the phone from a sales adviser.

I have been quoted Ł400 for an extended warranty and I confirmed with them that the DSG box is covered. That is for their Network rate i.e. not done by a main dealer (that is fine as I'll use JKM in Portsmouth).

He also offered me an extra month and said that if I take it out whilst under Audi warranty then the normal 90 days Wear and Tear clause will be waived.

So everyones thoughts, either way as I'm still deciding.

Less than Ł40 pcm isn't bad for piece of mind.

Only thing with W/D is catalyst and stereo not covered: otherwise they are way cheaper than manufacturer. Got my Touran on for Ł275
Nothing has fallen off / gone wrong since!

    Just considering this right now.

Been quoted Ł530 for 13 months cover, thats their top cover with all extras like airbags etc too.

My car is an 06 2.0 tdi quattro 140 manual.

The question is to take the chance that nothing will happen or pay out for this cover???

The only thing that I would say is that in the two years I had a warranty (WD first year and Tescos 2nd year) I didn't need to claim on either and touch wood it has only been minor issues since (temp sender and boost pipe seals) other than normal servicing that I had to pay for. Part only on both as best mate is a mechanic.

It is a difficult choice to make.

I have had a Warranty Direct policy since I got the car in Dec 2009. It's a 2006MY 2.0 TDI sportback with 66k on the clock.

Full warranty first year was Ł310 with wear and tear not kicking in until after 3 months. I didn't have a claim.

They wanted Ł350 to renew but I knocked them down to Ł320 based on low mileage of less than 7k per annum.

Renewed in Jan. so wear and tear included straight away but with it being over 70k miles the warranty only covers 80% parts and 100% labour.

Turbo went in Feb !!! Took it to my VAG specialist who quoted Ł750 incl vat (recon Turbo Ł400). He rang them and they gave him a claim number over the phone. I paid him the money and then sent all receipts and proof of servicing and MOT to Warranty Direct and got a cheque back for Ł550 within a week.

They do not include for any other bits i.e oil and filter etc or the new turbo oil feed pipe that was a condition of the turbo suppliers 12 month warranty and I had a Ł50 excess which came off the invoice.

All in all a completely hassle-free claim and I have ,so far, paid Ł310 (year1) +Ł320(year2)+ Ł200 (turbo) which totals Ł830 but I have a new turbo and 9 months still to go on this years' premium. They even sent another claim form out with the cheque !

On a car of my age with 70+ k on the clock I think it is very worthwhile and would recommend WD to anyone.

No doubt others will have different experiences but that's my two pence worth !

Im glad your happy mike but looking back would you not have been better off having not paid out?

Im still swaying towards the side of risking it...touch wood again lol.

    No, for two reasons.

    1. I have a new turbo and
    2. I have the peace of mind that the company pays out properly should anything happen and I have another 9 months cover for anything else.!

It all boils down to whether or not you are prepared to, and can afford, mechanical breakdown insurance.

Car insurance is mandatory so we have to live with it. I don't live in a flood plain so I don't need flood insurance.

Thank God none of us live in an earthquake zone

As far as I'm concerned Ł300 ish a year, claims or not, gives me a nice feeling of security and especially now I have experienced a claim situation with this particular company which has been satisfactorily resolved.

Maybe I'm lucky enough to be able to afford to pay for peace of mind. If I was trying to run an expensive, up-market car like an Audi on a tight budget then perhaps I would not bother. However, if I was in those circumstances then perhaps I would not have aimed as high as Audi for my car choice !

I hope your crossed fingers and touching wood work ok should you decide that route.

It's all down to how much risk you are prepared to take versus the price you have to pay.!

    Good luck

I am not going to wind myself up about Warranty Direct but I have had a poor experience with then and would not recommend them to a family member or friend.

They piss and moan that Audi charge too much and want me to contribute but I have paid for the main dealer rates!

I would maybe consider it for Ł300 ish a year but im getting quoted Ł530!

But yes i do see where your coming from mike.

Im only 21 and have pushed my budget to own such a decent car at my age so fingers crossed is maybe my best approach til uni is out the way!!

I guess for me with a mate as a mechanic, it no longer makes any sence, but can see for others that it would be worth while.

Potentially that Turbo issue may have just been the vanes stuck with oily soot (if you've got a TDi) which can be resolved for an hours labour and Ł40 cleaning kit.

It really is a personal choice, will work for some and be a waste of money for others.

Ye my cars just under 50k now so thought i would have a look.

Got an online quotation which was something ridiculous like over Ł600.

Couple of days later i got a phonecall from there call centre and he reduced the price cos of a "special deal this week".

There obviously making more than their fair share out of it as the guy i spoke to was 22 and had a mk5 Golf R32. I work part time in insurance sales and wouldn't have the product i sell, also used to have an R32 when i was 20 :P (stupidity but fun!) so i guess that guy would be thinking the same as me if it were the other way around.

These insurances are there to make money for the company.

You're being stiffed, i was paying Ł30 per month when i had my A3 S line DSG 140 TDI, was paying the same on the SRI Astra 150 i've just sacked off too, payed out plenty of times on the Astra no worries, all it was costing me was the Ł50 excess for each claim, saved me around Ł2500. I'll use them again on my Sportback when the 6 months RAC warranty runs out.

    Haggle more mate.

circleswim, did you declare about the bluefin when you had it done as the only thing putting me off about going with WD would be that it might not be covered when i get it remapped?

I was quoted about Ł750 for my 2008 s3 which is coming off the manuifacturers warranty end of next month. It's done 18k miles and I'm still going to be doing around 6k miles a year. It's weird they don't take into account annual mileage for quotes, surely there is a direct link to claims. As such I found it expensive, they called me as well and I told them that and she mumbled something about seeing what she could do but never called back.

I am swaying towards risking it, I figure for Ł750 a year and my mileage I am basically paying for other people's claims there (touch wood)
