The oil light has just come on in my 2.0 TDi - but what oil do I need to top it up with??

I'm assuming it'll be something like 3W30 fully synthetic - like the Castrol stuff Halfords do for about £15/litre?

Anyone suggest any particular brand, or good place to get the oil from?

As long as it says VW506.01 on the tin, it's fine.
Someone mentioned that Partco do a version, that's a fraction of the price of the 'name' brands.

In my owner's manual it states that with all TDI's with a DPF one should use oil to 507.00. That is the same spec as for the long-life service routine, even if one has fixed interval service.

Everyone's right. The new TDIs with a particulate filter (the ones with a straight out exhaust from about 2006 or 2007) require 507.00 spec oil, but its backwards compatible and 2004 cars like Pete's or mine (with slightly downward pointing exhausts) can use 506.01 or 507.00.

It was me who got 507.00 oil from Partco for £10 + VAT for 4.5 litres....
They didn't know anything about the specialised nature of the oil, but the spec was one the label. They just put it through as "normal" 5w30 synthetic.....

When I bought my 2.0TDI (140) I asked the stealer for a litre of oil to go with it. The bottle he gave me is as follows:

Castrol SLX Longlife III
SAE 5W-30, VW 504 00/507 00

If this helps at all ....
