What has been the most fun car you have owned (current or past)??

    Hi Guys,

just curious... what has been your most enjoyable car to own/drive. Is it your current A3 or a previous beauty. I do miss my mini cooper S. It had some custom Hamman Alloys and tints and custom Stereo. Am now driving a 2.0 TDI which is a great car, much more practical and comfortable, not to mention miles more economical than the mini and surprisingly doesnt feel much slower on the go, but it aint anywhere near as much fun to drive. Miss that supercharger noise too.

Reckon the cooper S was my most fun car I have owned, drove it to the south of france and it was awesome. there were very few mini's in france and even the french came up to me and talked in English to me about my car. Dont think it liked coming back to the Uk tho because shortly after it did someone drove into the back of it and it developed many faults towards the end of my ownership so sold it for the audi. How have you guys fared??

    to this point,

owned: either mk4 r32 (RIP!) or VR6 corrado (most indestructible car i've ever owned!!)....

driven: formula renaults were good fun in the wet at castlecombe... still love the lotus elise for its sheer simplicity, power to weight & handling.....

...but then i'm still waiting for my s3 to arrive! hopefully that'll bring the smile back to my face that my diesel bmw has managed to remove!! ;o)

I must admit I always prefer my current car over all my older ones. Each one up to now has generally been a step up from the previous one. Some years ago I had a Golf VR6 2.8 which was great fun to drive at the time but the problem is cars have moved on since then and a would probably not enjoy it so much today.

Gotta admit, I've ragged the crap outta my brothers New Elise 111S (160bhp)around the Bedford Autodrome last August and on an empty airfield and I really love the elise. Am very tempted to get an Exige S in the next few yrs as a fun car and maybe keep the audi as the main runabout/prcatical car. 240 ish bhp in that thing would be astonishing!

Right throughout my twenties I had company cars and they were all french oil burners so not much fun there (apart from the 306 which you could throw anywhere) so for me I guess it was my 205 gti. It caught me out a few times (nothing too serious) but if you were brave and kept your foot down it was great fun and used to embarrass a lot of cars through the twisty bits.

Probably the most fun car I've driven has to be the Exige...it really made me want one but I need a boot.
Unmolested Ming blue S3 (so it doesn't handle or stop very well), Bose, sunroof and centre armrest but no heated seats - Gone but not forgotten although I am enjoying the new 350CLK!

For me and maybe time has been kind but my first car after passing my test back in 1989 was a, wait for it, MG Metro Turbo. This thing was seriously quick for a first car and was great fun........but then as ever with British built cars the problems started. Blown head gasket (*2), knackered engine mountings (all of them twice!), gear box smashed itself apart, worn valve seals, running on after switch off, rust etc etc

    Ah the good old days.....

Oh I had one of them (mG metro rust bucket), unfortunately without the turbo!!

Gotta be my astra 1.8 SRi on a 03 plate although on saying that I had a very old mini many years ago (S reg 79 I think) which stuck to the road like glue. Only problem with it was that I had to shove a bag around the distributor and carry a boot full of WD40 when it rained..

Driving through puddles was definately a big NO NO otherwise it would just die....

Ah yes the old theft issue - I have never owned a car since that attracted as much interest from the scumbags. I used to park in the city centre where I worked and came back to find my drivers door open and the ignition barrel looking like it had been attacked - they must have been disturbed so the next day I pulled the fuel pump relay from the fuse box. Left work to find the car had gone (but I knew not very far!) and found it at the other side of the car park - can imagine their faces when it started running out of fuel

Still nicked my parcel shelf though !

You need to let this pp thing go, seriously! You're starting to sound stupid now. My cv of cars isn't the greatest. But my Renault Clio 172 was so much fun, don't miss it though, bring on the A3!

I need more power to do this 2.0TDI engine any justice... I think it's more bomb proof than the formidable 1.9TDI 130's... I just need to prove it!

Bring on the mods, i'll be laughing all the way to the strip & back.

Great post this by the way!!

This is gonna sound a bit **** but i can honestly say the new S3 is the best car i have ever owned bearing in mind i have owned an M3, TT, MK4 R32, 8L S3, GOLF GTI

i suppose its not as much fun as the rear wheel drive M3 but after a while the fun became fear, it was quite a scary car, i just prefer the 4WD system of the S3 you feel protected

Modern cars are far too restrained by electronics to ever be called fun.
Competent and safe, yes, but fun?
    No chance.
The most fun cars I've ever head were RWD.
Believe it or not, a Datsun Violet 140J and an Escort RS2000.
Both could be held on full lock in third gear, round some tasty local roads.
I've never, ever, had that much fun in ANY front wheel drive car.
Which is more than partly why I plumped for a BMW next.
Even if I only get it slightly sideways once in a blue moon, it will make me smile more than any FWD car.
It would appear many people are confusing 'best' with 'most fun'.
There's no doubt my modern cars make a mockery of my old Datsun Violet in every way, apart from fun.
I can get from A to B quicker now than ever before, but most journeys become instantly forgettable, where you have merely been a 'guiding passenger', rather than a driver.
Fun doesn't really come into it any more, sadly.
How can it, when your input is 'second guessed' by a computer all the time?

Most fun: Honda Integra Type-R - by a long way.

Best to drive: Porsche Carrera 4S (scary...and often requires too much concentration to be 'fun'...very rewarding though)

Best all rounder: My well sorted Audi S3 (8L)

Not always the case...but more often than not true.
Occasionally you find a modern car where you can turn all the electronics off...then the 'fun' can return - if that's what you want.

Even rarer...you find a modern car that has no electronics at all...and behaves in a rude manner every now and then.

Sadly, idiots crash them...and Manufacturers stop making them.

    But...they do exist...

Modern bikes are going the same way as cars.
They become competent to the point you can be going really stupid , life and licence threatening, speeds without any drama whatsover.
Hence the rise in value of 1980's bikes, where 100mph felt like 100 mph.

    Got to agree...
A power selector on some bikes and cars? (GSXR 1000, M5)
    Wow!
I always though your wrist/foot could be used as a proportional controller, not just two-step?
    How wrong was I?

It's a sad day when this sort of thing happens....when the majority of people have to be dumbed down and mollycoddled to the level of the doofus who has no idea.

    They've all got something.
Even my Datsun Violet had 'something'...
It had four headlights, so you could have the dip on and still look cool when you flashed your mates.
It also had M+S tyres on in the summer, because they were reduced.
Wet grip was non-existent, meaning opposite lock at any speed!

    my Wife's S2000 probably.

I don't think it's as quick in a straight line as the S3 but it sounds / feels like you are going much faster. Also at this time of year any right foot activity results in sideways action ( at which point I usually get shouted at by said Wife ! ).

4wd is not all bad though, I had a little play following a Z4 coupe this morning in my S3. I think he was trying to lose me by accelerating around a slippy corner at which point his tail stepped out about a foot! No doubt he ( or the electronics ! ) caught it but I could have gone way faster round that corner in the S3.

Yeah, but who was having the most fun in that scenario?
There's no doubt the S3 would handle the scenario more efficiently, but that doesn't make it more fun.
If you're being honest, don't you have a little more respect for the bloke that can get the tail out, rather than Mr.average who can plant the foot in a computer controlled 4x4?

Yeah, when driving the right car I like to think i am that bloke!

To be honest I'd say the S3 is a bit boring, all depends on what you want I guess.

If we didn't have the other car I'd probably have something different.

You can't argue with the poise / balance and effectiveness of the S3 but it's not going to offer much sideways action.

I always remember watching Rowan Atkinson drifting in a Morris Minor in the wet at about ten mph. Part of the problem with modern cars is you have to be going pretty fast to get them to slide which is not very sensible on our crowded roads.
