My brake pad waring light hs just come on. I have covered 24k. Is this normal as it seems quite low to me!

I was extremely surprised when my pads still hadn't been changed by about 28000 miles.
In the past, I've had car pads wear out as low as 9000 miles.
So I was beginning to think the Audi pads were made of granite.
I wouldn't call 24K miles bad, but most of my driving is A/B roads, so I will inevitbly do more braking than your average M-way driver.

Do they check them when its in for service?

Think it depends on the service.
I've heard they don't bother taking the wheels off for minor ones.
FWIW, you allegedly have around 1500 miles between the brake-pad warning light and metal-to-metal grinding, according to my dealer.
