when i turn the ignition the glow plug warming up symbol doesn't always show first time so before starting it i try it again and it'll do it.

When reading the manual it says if this happens i should get it serviced.

just wanted to be educated on this topic (having never owned a diesel or a turbo or a turbo diesel for that matter)

thanks in advance

As it says - you may be due a service - is the car under warrenty?

If you go to Audi and explain this, they will say it needs a service anyway

what miles are on the car? how old is it?

did you have a 60k (roughly) service?

I think the next service date is around 80k anyway

If you'd read the manual properly you'd have seen that the 140/170PS TDI engines as fitted to all A3's since 2003 have a better style of glow plug coil and if the ambient air temperature is above 5-7 degrees then it will not light, you can start the car like you would a petrol car.

If you discharge the coil and then turn the key again it does need to 'charge up' hence why it lights on the second attempt.

You're potentially putting excess strain on the glow plugs and battery by doing this every time. I'm sure it's not serious but you're probably shortening the life of both.
