    Alpina D3 is ordered!

Only two new ones left, either grey or black.
Not bothered, whichever one comes first.
    Interestingly, I met a guy with a 170 S-line A4 at the BMW garage.
We were able to do a side-by-side comparison between an idling 170 and an idling D3.
No contest, the BMW is still much quieter, although the 170 is definitely quiter thn my 140.
He was having a test drive of the D3 after me, so I don't know how he got on.
    Anyhoo, I should be Audi-less by January(ish).
I dare say some (most...) of you will be glad!
Can't wait, haven't been this excited about a car for years.

If the extended test drive was anything to go by, it's some machine.
Obviously, because of the sales bloke in the back, I wasn't able to really push it, but he was encouraging me to boot it up.
1st and 2nd are over so quickly it's hard to gauge the 200bhp, but once you're into third and higher, bloody hell!
Refinement is much better than my car, even with the 19's.
Ride is also much more compliant, which just confirms that Audi can't really seem to manage sporty suspension without going bloody hard.
    No need for it.
Traction was the thing that got me.
The roads were wet, yet the D3 was just squatting and getting on with it.
No wheelspin, no TC light flashing.
My car would have been a wheelspinning mess, even with 60bhp less.
It'll be my fist RWD car in god-knows-how-long, but I'm looking forward to it.
Some controlled sideways action will be most welcome!
    Really, it's a helleva car for 28K.
    Perfect car for me.
    4 adults in comfort, 200bhp, 45+mpg and low Co2.
    Can't say fairer than that.
The sales guy was saying it would make a good private buy, and I can see why.
The projected resale is bloody good.
I'm still going down the company route though, I like the hassle free factor.

Well done Bowfer - I trust you've had a good test drive this time!

I hope you will enjoy your D3 as much as you've disliked your particular A3.

I'll stick some photos on here when I get it.
It's always a bad time of year though.
Thing will be filthy within minutes of leaving the dealer.
With regard to the dealer, my first impressions of BMW were very favourable.
Salesman nice and relaxed, not at all condescending.
    Test drive offered with minutes.
Handshake and door held open when I left etc.
Not at all 'sniffy', like I suspected it would be (for some reason..)

(as an aside, we walked through the workshop to get to the car.
It was packed full of Minis..is their reliability suspect?
    The wife wants one)

Good for you bowfer! Saw my first D3 the other day and it looked quite a motor. How handy was the Bank Of Scotland link?

I would have one. Normal 3 series is boring but the Alpina spruces it up a bit.

How much are they? Kind of thing I will get when I need more doors in a few years time

Their figures weren't too good, TBH, but the link was gratefully received, so cheers again.
I've gone for BMW's own lease deal.
It seemed competitive enough and they're able to allocate one of two cars to me quickly.
If it were a freely available car I'd shop around, but these things are like hens' teeth.

    Nice one.
There's a review on the Alpina site, where they say that the D3 is about 300 less than the M Sport ! Only downside is that you can't change the spec, without incurring a high cost penalty. But then, the standard spec is good anyway.

Any idea what the availability is like for a private purchase ?

Down your way, a dealer called Sytners seems to have a few low mileage ones listed on Autorader.

I was concerned it might have 'ALPINA' written all over it, but it doesn't.

I'd imagine the 'lazy' power characteristics of the diesel lends itself to quite controllable roundabout action, or am I wrong ??

Mine is on those 'kin runflats and there is nothing lazy about the twin turbos on the 335d.....and 438lb/ft does not help! It loses traction VERY easily but the tc is good at bringing it back. I have not got the guts to turn the tc off!!

Am I right in thinking there are different levels of TC on the BMW's ?
I remember Tiff Needel going on about it, but that's maybe only on M models.

Hold the tc button in briefly and it is semi off (!) hold it down for a few seconds and it is all the way off. Be very careful though as when they let go, they really do let go and i think only the tc would catch it. I have had mine seriosly sideways with tc on and going in straight line in the damp.......

I think yours will be much better though, less torque and non run flat tyres plus much better suspension (Alpina) equals more grip. BMW really have got it wrong with the M sport suspension, with the run flat tyres it is just too hard and offers no grip. Thats why mnay people are swapping runflats for non runflats but I cant help feeling you then have a suspension/tyre mismatch.... For my mind the only way forward is non runflats and purposely designed suspension, which yours has. If only they did an Alpina 335d.

Dont get me wrong the 335d is a GREAT car you just need to respect it if it is not 100% dry.

Bit nervous of the fact I'll be collecting my first RWD car in years halfway through January...
Can't be a lot worse than my existing car in the snow though, it's awful.

Dont worry mate. I read a report about an M Sport BMW compared to the D3 and everyhting they said about the M Sport (bad ride and grip) was right but of interest to you is that they rated the D3 suspension and grip etc as much better. I am sure it will be fine. I came from a line of 4wd cars and it took a while for me to get used to the 335d but I am there now and have just adjusted my driving style.

awesome choice of car, i wanted one but insurance wouldnt allow it for personal and leisure use etc, still test drove it, and found that there wasnt anything at all that bugged me, the only thing was that u have to pay a premium for sat nav, which i need badly as i never have a clue where to go lol.My mum has a 535d sport and tbh it didnt feel too much slower, and the handling/ride of the d3 is in a totally different league, the 535 fidgets so much more, which is also on 19s.

I felt much more comfortable leaning on the d3 after 20 mins than i do in the 5 series after driving it all the time.

    Any discount?

Congrats Bowfer, look forward to the pictures.

As the options appear limited you won't have ticked the optional 'non opening fuel filler flap' in error like we both did last time!

    LOL!
I didn't tick the 'two-stroke' option on the Audi either, it just came that way.
