Car Care During Winter - What To Do

With winter fast approaching I was wondering what I need to my TDI to make it Winter proof.

E.g. do I need any anti-freeze? Should I carry certain tools with me? Should I change my driving style? Should I change anything or get it something checked over before it gets any colder?

Stuff like that really.
