Anyone know where to buy a sat nav for my a3.I have looked on ebay. Does anyone know if the sat nav out of a a4 the same as one out of an a3.

There's one on eBay at the moment for BIN £699. The A4 unit is the same unit technically and operationally, but it has square edges on the facia, whereas the A3 has rounded ones (at the top).

Have there been any reports of thefts of the RNS-E unit? I mean the is the face of the unit removable?

Quite worrying this. I always thought that factory fitted satnavs weren't touched by thieves. I suppose on the whole they are much safer to have than your tom toms and the likes...
One advantage of a PDA or TomTom type unit is that it's very easy to take it out of the car and take it with you.
Depending on where I am leaving my car I either take my Sat/Nav PDA out of it's Brodit mount and put out of sight in the armrest or take it away with me. The Brodit mount is hard wired and just looks like a phone mount.
In the past, when radios had removeable fronts to deter thievies, I even had some smash a window and steal the main unit out of the dash whilst the front panel was in the briefcase in the office.
But my PDA is mounted in a Brodit mount down near the radio so there is no mount on the windscreen! But Yes it's a good point if it is windscreen mounted.

I don't think so. There was a feature on national news recently which said that in one year (can't recall if it was 2005 or 2006), a staggering 265,000 portable sat nav units were stolen. The police added that this figure doesn't include attempted thefts, where the pond-life broke into the car hoping to find hidden portable units.h5djr said:

The RNS-E does not have any removable fascia parts. It does however have an anti-theft code, which I understand is verified against the car it is connected to. What this means (I think) is that if you disconnect the power and reconnect it a short time later to the same car, you're not prompted for the code - at least this is what has happened to me. My point was that most 'all-in-one' dash top type units are mounted using a suction system on the screen, which leaves a tell-tale mark unless it's cleaned off each time it is removed.
A PDA such as my HP4700 unit just pushes into a cradle which povides a recharging power connection. In my case I use a Brodit cradle and it looks like a mobile phone cradle and obviously there is no mark left when the unit is either hidden in the car or the boot or simply removed from the car completely.
I not sure how many 'Audi' radios are stolen from cars but I would thing the RNS-E unit is no more vulnerable than a standard fit radio unless the thief knows the value of these units. But either the radio or the RNS-E are quite easy to remove if you have a set of the removal keys and I'm sure there are people who can easily get around the coding. In never made any difference in the past if a radio was coded - there was always someone who could crack the code.
Thanks for clearing that up Dave! Fair point too; obviously you're going to use your PDA away from the car, so without evening thinking about it the PDA will go with you when you leave it. Much easier to live with as you say instead of wiping clean sucker marks from the windscreen.
The RNS-E isn't infallible of course, but to virtually all opportunists, it will appear far too complicated to steal and moreover, difficult to move on quickly. The custom A3 (or A4/A6) fit and complex connection interface means it's not going to go into another car easily, and while the codes can be broken (see http://www.navplus.us), only the most serious of specialists will be able to do it - not like the early days of anti-theft codes, where you could leave the stereo in the freezer for a few hours!

They must be! There can't be that many cars over there with sat nav in to get stolen and if there was they must have run out of units to pinch now that many have been sold!

Agreed. There was some speculation over on navplus.us about the high number of RNS-Es available there, but as you say there is a steady flow from these vendors. In addition, navplus.us was running a thread on eBay experiences with RNS-E purchases which is well worth a read.JamS3 said:

As long as the seller has very good feedback and has sold plenty of units then I would not worry about getting damaged/faulty goods. I got mine from ebay from the same person as JohnS3 on here and it was a immaculate 2006 model.
