Xenon Side Light Replacement

Hi guys, Loving my Sportback, but one thing thats annoying is the yellow Side lights compared to the lovely xenons,

I want some white/blueish side lights to put in. Any idea how hard it is to fit and what bulbs to go for, also suppliers for the said bulbs

I have had a quick search around but cant find anything really!!

I think they are wedge style. Ultraleds.co.uk are a good place to buy and good value however choose carefully

They are well made but have a green tint, not suitable for xenons.

In my experience PIAA have been excellent, try here:

NEVER choose BLUE, they are soooo naff!!!

yeah I know, but the quality is much better than the ones listed in Ultra LEDs. and they last as long as they say! PIAA are excellent.

I've fitted Philips Blue Vision sidelight bulbs from eBay to try and match my Xenons. They're not actually blue, but a lot whiter and are an improvement. Only cost £6 delivered, so nothing to moan about!

They are a bit fiddly to fit because access behind the lights is limited, but with a bit of patience they go in fine.

Also note that if your car has DIS, fitting LEDs instead of filament type bulbs may throw up an error message on DIS if the wattage is too low.
 
I have just changed my sidelights on my xenons from the yellow crappy bulbs to some Ring Cool Blue ones.

Had these on my old car and liked how white they are when they were switched on.

Yeah this can happen, you can always put a load resistor across the two teminals of one sidelight.
 
Dont attempt to put a resistor into the sidelight wiring unless you know what the correct resistance that is required as we have had a couple of these in for wiring repairs that went on fire due to the wrong type being used especially if you have a bulb function warning system buy the correct bulbs with the built in resisters this would apply to all 06/07 models as far as I know but maybe someone on here can enlighten us all if im wrong
 
Correct, thanks for that Techimike. I know that PIAA have resistors built in but whether they are enough to replicate the resistance of a standard bulb, I don't know.

I have been using LED side light bulbs for years in my previous 8L S3, these were the ones I was using... Ultraleds "U5016W+ (501) 12V White Xenon 6 Super Bright Leds" ...

I have used these in my 8L S3 with no problems or warnings from the DIS.

However, this evening I decided to try a spare set I have in my new 8P S3. The DIS (auto-check system) must be more sensitive in the new car, as it reports that the side-light (parking light) has failed.

You can actually see the LED bulb light up and then go out. I believe this is when the system is checking the resistance of the bulb.

So, whats the solution? Which LEDs have resistors built in?

Also, can you tell me more about the resistor kits and the warning about burning out the wiring?

PS: thanks to the search engine, I managed to find plenty of posts about how to remove the side light bulbs. So cheers to all who posted how to do it.
 
Been doing some searching on Google.

The load resistors stocked at Ultraleds seem quite common, quite a few US sites sell them. But I also came across a post on a Lexus forum where one guy has done a guide about fitting the load resistors....

...sounds like they get ****** hot though so placement is crucial. There's not much room in A3/S3 8P head lights, and with the head lights cap/lid clipped into place, I don't think there will be much room.

I think it needs someone on here who is confident with car electrics to try this - and thats not me! :)
