Changing oil pump on a 98 1.8T A6. Engine code AEB. What a bitch of a job getting the sump off. Does the subframe have to droped to remove the sump and the oil pump? Can anybody help.:faint:

Ok. Hi anybody thinking about changing a oil pump on a AEB 1.8T, in an 98 A6.
Just finish the job. Hope this helps. You do have to drop the sub frame. Tried undoing the engine mounts and lifting the engine up, but is just doesn’t give you the room needed to slide the sump out and will not give you the room to extract the oil pump. Plus it is so much easier, with the sub frame hanging, to get at all the bolts holding the sump on. This, once the sump is removed will also give you the room to pull out the oil pump and its shaft.
Now the reason I’m changing the pump. Had the oil warning light come on, while slowing down from motorway speeds, when hot. Fine at 70+ and at tick over, but not at 1200 to 2000rpm. Oil warning light came on. Thought it was the typical oil strainer choked up, but no. It was the pressure relieve valve. It was heavily scored and sticking. After the oil light had gone out the engine sounded very tappetty! If you stopped the engine and started it after 30 seconds, the engine was quiet again. Maybe the relieve valve had freed its self with no pressure in the system? Hope this helps and may some indication to oil pump problems!
