No, my engine is extremely quiet, inside and out, hot or cold.
No discernable tappet noise at all. I would say it is as quiet as the 2.4 V6 A4 I used to own a few years ago.

Get it checked out at your dealer.
(I assume the oil level is OK ?)

I get a tappet like noise on my petrol - sometimes there, sometimes not.

Mind you, mine chirps too now and again which is odd.

A bit off topic, I had a caterham 7 HPC with the Vauxhall XE engine. Normal use the hydraulic tappes where fine, a little noise for them for the first few mins, then quiet (as quiet as that car could be) as a mouse. 10 mins on the track pulling 1.4 latteral G in the corners and they started to make loads of noise, oil level was fine etc etc, and the data logger recorded no loss even momentry in oil pressure. The solution was the oil I was using, mobile 1 was to thin for the engine under hard load, so I switched to mobile 1 motorsport. But this in its self did not solve the problem because the hydraulic tappets held onto a large amount of the old oil which was to thin, so they had to be removed from the engine and flushed (or replaced dependent on my budget), and that solved the problem.

It might be that the very thin long life oil is causing problems with the hydraulic tappets but I guess the best thing to do is pop into the dealer and see what they think.

yup my TFSI is the same

i think its more to do with the high pressure injectors rather than the tappets.

i wasn't worried about it at first but not anymore as it seems to be a 'feature'!

I am not even sure the TFSI uses hydrualic tappets, but if it does how many miles have your engines covered before the noise has developed?

The point on my original post was to point out that some designs of hydrualic tappets don't circulate their oil, so the thin long life oil filling them could be well past its best.

I think you may find that it actually is the injectors you can here, not the tappets.

Mine is the same, and while mine was in yesterday haveing the seat frame replaced, I had a 2.0 T FSi A6 as a courtesay car and it was just the same.

    Nothing to worry about.

It is a very noisy engine. And I believe it is the injectors, a VAG specialist mentioned it in passing to me only the other day.

It is the same in the 2.0FSI (non turbo). I have seen it mentioned in various forums and apparently it is indeed a 'feature' of FSI engines. It is the high pressure injectors that you hear.

I first noticed it in a colleague's A4, also a 2.0FSI, a couple of years ago and was kinda dissapointed to find that my sportback made exactly the same noise. If only they would put the same noise insulation in the petrol cars as they do in the TDIs. It is no problem inside the car, but outside it is very apparent and kinda sounds like a diesel clatter.

Well, my 2.0T is extremely quiet, even starting from cold. It is one of the smoothest and quietest engines I have ever owned, by a huge margin.

If yours is noisy, it is either defective, or it has been thrashed !

As previously stated it is a feature of the 'FSI' engine and is nothing to worry about. I raised my concerns with a good friend who is in to his engines/ cars and he informed me that is all part of the FSI engine and not to worry.

This guy strips and re-builds engines for fun at the weekends an know's his stuff so don't panic mate, just enjoy the noise when you put ya foot down!

have you any proof of that?

its the injector noise as i said in my previous reply.

the FSI engine uses very high pressure fuel injectors similar to new diesel engines.

Then why is my engine quiet, and completely free from rattling of any kind ?

If I stand outside my car after starting up, all I hear is a smooth hum. No rattles.

Inside the car, at idle, the dominant noise is a smooth burble from the exhaust. Pulling away, above about 1500rpm, the exhaust noise disappears, and I just hear a very faint hum from the engine. It's very similar to a 6-pot actually. That's it, absolutely no rattling of any kind, at any time, at any temperature !

BTW, my car is 6 months old (bought Sept 2006), so I guess it is possible that the newer cars have been modified by Audi, if there was a problem on earlier cars. Incidentally, so far, my car exhibits zero oil consumption, which would be consistent with an engine with low wear and/or low mechanical noise.

perhaps you are more special then everyone else then...........

As you can see from the baove replies there are several owners who have the name noise and also this was mentioned on the Mk5 Golfs forum and people with the GTI's which has the same engine also noticed the same noise.

The noise isn't that loud, its just a faint clicking sound of the injectors pulsing.

Well my 2007 S3 is slightly noisy and thats brand new with 2.5k miles on and no oil consumption! Not bad through!

The new TFSI engines are noisier than others because of the technology.

Well, there seems to be a huge inconsistency between my experience and the handful of reports above ("very noisy engine" vs "extremely quiet").

I can only conclude that Audi have made some changes to the design recently.

It depends upon what experience you have had ie what cars exactly have you been used to that your are basing your comparison to?

Iv'e come from 2 8L S3's and at the min the noise seems more diesel than those on tickover.

    Yes I agree.

I am basing my criterion for an engine being 'quiet' or 'smooth' against the 2.4 V6 A4 and the 320i straight six I used to own a few years ago. So, that's a pretty severe test, I think you would agree.

Please note I'm not saying its 'very' noisey and mine too does not make hardly any noise when idling at any temp and all i get is a nice rumble from the exhaust but I noticed a slight noise (if i kneel down by the front bumper by the grill) after about two weeks of owning the car which I have been told and has been veryified several times in this thread is just a feature of the 'FSI' engine and how it functions.

Its not a sign of a faulty engine, or design changes by audi or that the motor has been thrashed, its just the way it is any maybe some are louder than others???

called into audi today asked technician to take a look at my car concerning injector noise and he confirmed this is a feature of fsi engine it is to do with the pressure the injectors are working under just as robina3 has said

    Jam is right.

The 8L S3, and in fact all the 1.8T engines, have the same tappety noise. Its actually a combination of all sorts. There are numerous solenoid valves and obviously the injectors, etc. that all make clicking noises.

So I expect the 2.0TFSI is going to be very similar, and probably sound even like a diesel slightly because of its high pressure direct injection system.

I'm pretty sure it does as most car engines do. It stops you from having to adjust valve clearances every x miles. Strangely my Mum's Honda Jazz has solid lifters so it'll need checking/adjusting at some point in its life.

Car engines generally don't rev high enough to need solid lifters. Not sure about the likes of CTRs and RS4s etc with they're highish redlines.

I think if I was in your position, I would ask my dealer to demonstrate a couple of their 2.0T's. If you can't tell the difference, then that's end of story, but if your engine is significantly noisier, you would have a good case for a warranty claim.

Audi is supposed to be a premium brand, and there is no way I would put up with my engine being noisy and rattly. As I've said, my engine doesn't rattle, and neither did either of the two cars I test drove before I ordered it.

No, petrol engine is definitely quieter, but comparing these FSI engines to some V6s, of course you would notice they generate somewhat different noise at idle (or when cold, but at least petrol isn't freezing so easily ).

Not that there's much noise on my, sure it doesn't sound that nice as 6-cylinder from outside when it's cold morning, but it's near-silent inside.

My engine is the same. I popped the bonnet and I reckon there are 2 things causing it. One of them seemed to be coming from the alternator belt tensioner. And it seemed to be vibrating quite wildly too. The other noise I'm not sure about.
While driving there's no noise but at idle it's unacceptable. Gonna get it checked out this week now I'm on leave (yay!). I will ask them to demo me with another tfsi if they try and fob me off.

I've booked my car in for thursday.

The tech said it was normal noise so I said that lots of guys on this forum said they had quiet idle. He said he'd do a diagnostic check on it so I said I wasn't happy with that as it wouldn't show everything up. He said they then compare it to 3 other cars with the same engine, preferably of the same model.

Fingers crossed they'll get it sorted.

mm, that reminded me.. on another forum, there was some talk about belt being a bit loose, which would cause it to slip when engine is cold, making some kind of weird noise. It would go away when engine got warm, but they did something on the service to it.

No idea if this the same noise, but.. just came to mind.

    Got my car back

Audi dude reckons there's nothing wrong with it. They compared it to another a3 tfsi that had only done 2 miles and it was the same apparently. Are we being too sensitive??

I've made a vid which clearly shows the noise I'm on about. Plus halfway through I closed in on what my mate said was the tensioner and you can see it vibrating. I'm not sure it is a tensioner cos it doesn't look like it touches a belt! The audi guy didn't correct me though.

    Anyway......
