Could someone tell me if S Tronic is classified as an Automatic as my wife only has an automatic licence.

I'm guessing it is as there's no clutch but I just want to be 100% sure

Yes it is.

My wife also has auto only (she`s Canadian) so the DSG is ideal for us.

I agree. According to my V5C Registration Certificate my A3 with a DSG is designated under Model/Type as an A3 SE TDI Auto.
