    Bleeding oil consumption...

Oil warning light came on yesterday.
Had to beg/borrow/steal a bottle from another tdi driver in here.
So the whole litre went in.
Bleeding warning light is STILL on !

We've recently bought two more 2.0tdi's in here.
    A Passat and a Jetta.
    That's a total of 5 x 2.0tdi's we have in here now.
    A Passat saloon,a Passat estate,a Golf,my A3 and a Jetta.

Only the Passat saloon, which is sitting at 4000 miles, hasn't used oil like it's going out of fashion.
It became quite a topic of conversation in here yesterday, when I was running around trying to borrow some oil and every other owner was saying "mine uses a helluva lot too"...

The MD is getting a bit p-eed off at the bills too,at 15 a bottle.

I've never owned a car that needed forward planning before, but this thing does.If I'm going on a long journey,I have to make sure I have oil in the boot.

    That's a joke.
That sort of thing should have been left behind in the 70's.

I've gone thru 2 litres in 17k miles, which is way more than my 150PD used in 40k miles. I wonder if its a trait of the 2.0TDi engine?

4 out of 5 cars in our fleet says it is...
2 litres in 17k miles is good.
I've gone through at least 6 litres in 20K,minimum.

Try removing the dip stick and poking it back in if you haven't already!

I will be doing that before I tip any more oil in.
It did occur to me that the sensor might be faulty,as 1 litre usually takes me from warning light to 3/4 up the dipstick.
Oh for an electronic oil gauge, like the wife's car...

Mines a litre every 17k, it seems 1-2 litres per 10k is normal though according to my dealer

    I'm quoting the manual here:

"Depending on how the car is driven, oil consumption can be up to 0.5ltr/1000 kms"

So maybe my 6 litres in 20k miles / 32k kms isn't that bad after all.

Audi say I could have used as much as 16 litres and I still wouldn't be able to complain....

    Unbelievable,but there you go.

When I had to put some oil in mine the low level light never went out. Pulled the dip stick out and the low level light went out.

I think mine used about a litre for every 4k... Seems excessive but as has been mentioned, it does say it in the handbook (I know that doesn't make it right)

Strange, but I just checked the oil and the litre I put in yesterday didn't raise the oil to it's usual mark.
It was still barely registering on the dipstick.
I borrowed another half litre from an A4 1.8T driver I know a few units down.
Interestingly,he said his petrol A4 1.8T (56 plate) is only getting 4000 miles to a litre too.
So it's evidently not just the diesels that have a thirst for it.

I bought a 4L can of the correct Castrol oil when I first got my new A3. Last week-end I finally finished that can. I have not even opened the 1L bottle supplied with the car. I keep that to take when I drive to Austria each year, just in case. My car has done 33k miles so far.

Well I am on my 6th Audi (5 of them petrol), and none of them have used significant oil.

I have found that they typically use 1/2 to 1 litre in the first 5000 miles, then nothing after. My current 2.0T also seems to have no appetite for oil !

Think yourself lucky you had someone you could borrow some oil for. Mine once drank an entire litre in 500 miles, producing the dreaded warning in the middle of France.

I managed to find a VW dealer where no-one spoke a word of English and thus had to try to source the the correct oil using my basic French and a lot of pointing.

I've used 1.5 litres in 35K on mine so not excessive I think.

A mate has bought an a6 2.0Tdi and has got through a litre in around 4K... Seems quite common

Mine is now on 11K and used 2 litres ....
I phoned audi and they say 1litre per 1K miles is the limit ....

Come on audi that is crazy....
But what can you do or say

I once had a 325tds bmw with 178K on the clock...It NEVER used more than 0.5L of oil between 10K services....

I'm wondering if it's a feature of being on the AVS system - effectively you are getting twice the distance out of your oil as you are constantly adding fresh to the system. That said, my 170 is on 3300 miles now and last time I checked it hadn't used a drop.

The dealer never had an explanation for the litre in 500 miles incident, although they agreed that was far outside the normal range.

When I had the cracked cylinder head replaced a few months back the service manager said they'd had quite a few of these in as apparently it was a manufacturing defect which afflicted quite a few of the early 2.0 TDIs. Looking back I wonder whether this defect was responsible for the heavy oil usage.

It drinks oil far far more in stop-start traffic than it does on motorway runs.

I've evidently got a faulty low oil-level sensor now,as the friggin thing will not go out, despite the dipstick showing the oil is now on max.
So not only is the ridiculous oil consumption (by anyone else's standards but Audi's) a pain in the arse, but I've now had to book another trip to the dealer too.

God,I cannot remember a car making me so angry.

Nigglynigglynigglyniggly little faults, all the bleeding time.

Mind you,I'm kind of glad I can't sell it (company car).
I'd probably struggle to sell it,especially with a straight face...

My first new A3 2.0fsi used oil like it was going out of fashion, I ran the car in gently etc etc. The car was a POS and I p/x it for my current A3 2.0T, this car was an ex demostrator, so pressumably may have not been run in too gently?..............It uses no oil at all, you also need to remember Audi use fully synthetic from new. We had a bulletin from Porsche some years back now that said "Mobil 1 must NOT be used for the first 500 miles" sounds to me like it stops/slows the bedding in procedure.

I can't see anything other than wildly varying build quality and/or tolerances for the vast differences in oil consumption that owners report.
If you're lucky enough to get an oil-tight car, think yourself lucky.
    Bit of a lottery though.
A lottery I won't be buying a ticket for again.

I wonder whether Audi have quietly made some mods to the FSI engines ?

Several people here have reported that their FSI's (2.0 or 2.0T) are rattley, but my 2.0T (and both cars I test drove before buying it) are totally smooth and free of rattles, either at start-up, or when running. Maybe this is why it uses no oil.

    Wink

Had a 4 hour test drive in the new S3 today and upon opening the rear hatch noticed a pouch on the left, un zipped it and inside was a nice litre of oil...

Is this something we should be concerned about? Seems a little off that the new S3 has a special leather pouch in the rear of the car just for oil?

Me wonders if the next model will have a nice tube into the engine bay and a tap on the dashboard? :-D

A spare litre of oil is standard. I also got one with my A3, in a zip-up wallet that velcro-fastens in the boot. I don't think you need to read too-much into it

Audi probably call the spare litre of oil a 'courtesy',but there's no blue-smoke with an oil-burning fire.... ;-)

    Anyway,update for you.

I'm sure I mentioned above that the low oil warning light wouldn't go out, even after the top-up ?

Well, sod's law dictated that it decided to go out the night before I was due to visit the dealer to get it looked at.
Bloody infuriating when it had been on for 4-5 days..
I went to the dealer anyway.
    You can guess the rest...

    "No fault logged"

They couldn't explain why the warning light took 4-5 days to go out and aren't going to do any more investigations.

    So that's that then.

Time will tell if my oil sensor is knackered or not.
If the engine seizes,it'll be knackered.

Reading the above, guess I have a 'good un'!!

I have covered just over 7k in my TDI 170 now with the oil still 3/4's of the way up the dip-stick, never having been topped up. The car has been driven quite vigorously at times even from new and the oil consumption on my A3 is no different to any other cars Iv'e owned.

My yellow oil light came on while i was driving on the M1 yesterday. Done 10200 miles, bought some Mobile 1 from the stealers and all seems ok now. Reading the posts above worries me a little now though! Bought the car with 6800 miles from Audi. Hope it hasn't got too much of a thirst for the stuff at £13 for a litre!!

Funny this thread gets updated, because I'll be purchasing a very similar bottle tomorrow.

Our Sportback 2.0TDI has used about a 1.5 litres in 2.5 years/22k. After using up the Audi bottle, I had another half-full one from a previous car which is now spent. The car has had one service in that time too.

So overall the oil consumption isn't that bad at all.

Not sure if the VW stuff comes in a silver bottle ... I know it now comes in a leather case.

Do the TDI and TFSI use the same oil?

Would be useful to know as we have a Touran 2.00 TDI, and will be looking at getting an S3 in the future?

0 to 4000 miles over 10 months on a 2.0T FSi. Not used a drop of oil yet.

I know I do a lot less miles than most, but I was fully expecting to need some by now.
