    S3 Price/options list

I saw a copy of the S3 price list, it does not make good reading.

    DVD Sat Nav Ł2175
    BOSE Ł355
    Bucket Seats Ł1685
    Black Styling Pack TBC
    Acoustic Parking Ł260
    Flat Bottom Wheel Ł270

Think you will find the price similar to the 8l S3's price (before the prices were revised) with all those options.

I thought the flat bottom wheel was the RS4 wheel.

option prices look pretty much the same to me. A fully loaded 8L S3 was about 32K. People seem to have the strange idea that S class cars are cheap!! Since when has that been the case?

    Hi Mark88,

The way I see it is the S8 style wheels, as pictures on the audi.de and the front of this pdf -
    www.recoil.co.za/stuff/s3.pdf

Are standard, although why you would want to swop them for the other wheels shown in the brochure is beyond me.

Have you got any official news from your dealer yet? Nothing from mine as yet, Although my car is in for a service today so I'll be asking when I collect it!!!

    Regards, John.

    .
We know those wheels are standard. BUT alot of us expected 19" RS4 wheels as an option, especially considering they are offered on the TT.

The german audi.de site has a pic of RS4 wheels on the S3 pages. I actually quite like the S8 style wheels, just would have prefered 19's.

Hello John, Nice to see you are considering an S3 in sprint blue. I visited the dealer in bristol last week and they had an RS4 in sprint blue and an S6 in sprint with bucket seats too.... Awesome. It is definately the colour to have.

I had no problems spending Ł22.5 K on my old S3 from Germany (with a 5K saving), but am having to seriously think about Ł32K for the same spec as mine for a UK model when I can get a 18 month old S4 for the same money and have a V8 soundtrack... Its proving to be a difficult decision this time...

I noticed you still have your S3, did you get this from Germany through Colin? Are you planning to part-ex it? If so what price were you offered?

    Hi Steve,

Got my S3 through the same route via Colin. It was one of the best weekends of my life. Stretching the cars legs a little on the Autobahn. (Jurgen said the engines were bench run before going in the car).

Spoke to colin recently on MSN, unfortunately with the Ł:Euro rate being not what it was 4.5 years ago, theres hardly any savings to be made on personal imports these days.

But I'm in the same situation as you: which car next, new S3, S4 v8 (2 year old), or Boxster S (2 year old). Although i have small deposit down at the dealer for the new S3, I don't think I'll be taking a full order out. The styling - I'm not keen on. And to be honest, there have been so many performance niggles with my S3, its put me of Audi's. Similar with my old A3 1.8T. Girlfriends Golf GTi Anni, 4 years old now, starting with same performance niggles. Just not keen on having another Audi 4-pot turbo.

But I've been looking at part-exing my S3, one place (indepentant car trader) offered me 12K. Porsche kind-of loosly agreed to something around 13K. In April '06 Parkers guide listed trade in at 13900. Mines 45K miles, immaculate inside and out - as I'd expect most peoples cars are on here.

The main complaint on this thread seems to be about the high options prices.

The biggest savings on an import are on the options prices. Even if there is little to be saved on the basic price of the car, surely it's worth considering an import for this reason alone ?

I think when you start getting into Ł32k you really start to look elsewhere. New TT, Lotus Exige, Lotus Europa, S4s, Boxsters, 996's...

I would imagine I'd have to part with 12k to go from my current A3 to an S3, and considering visually you can barely tell them apart. I gotta ask myself is the performance and fancy seats worth all that money.

    Hi Steve,

I'm the other John with the S3! However it did come from Germany, but not from Colin. I'd like to part ex it, but the dealer wouldn't give a price until closer to the delivery of the new car. Figured I'd have a more luck selling it now, not in January!

    Regards, John

There is no way i'd pay list on a new S3 with all the options - Ł32K, unless they limit supply ala R32.

Look at the last models, Ł27K (new price) '03 S3's are Ł15-16k while, Ł22K (new Price) R32's are still Ł17k anywhere - WTF???

I don't buy my cars purely for re-sale but anything can happen so you have to keep one eye on future value. I think the Golfs have more of a cult following and the 4-door option helps it sell to the bespectacled 2.4 grown-ups!

I was looking at used R32's on the VW web site last night as another option (along with scooby's, M3's, Porsch's) and there are flippin loads of R32's available (so I can't see its a limited production volume), they are around the Ł30K mark which seems a lot to pay for a VW that is.... (which is supposed to be limited numbers)

I spent yesterday evening doing a trawl of the S4's on the market and there seems to be limited choice (as you would expect) but look like there are great deals to be had. A lot I vewed were around the Ł30-32K range with the first 18 months depreciation gone, which I would have to bear the brunt of that with a new S3...

Hello ALB, I remember speaking way back on audiworld! Sad to hear that you had so many problems with your S3, the only thing I suffered was a probem where the electric motors on the xenon headlights go to sleep and dip downwards, but after just under 60K on the clock of a nov 2001 model it has only ever regularly drank oil (exaclty what the manual quotes) other then that it has been amazing fun to drive and a joy to own and rock solid reliable, being just enough understated to stand out and hide from the crowd (at the same time)....

(BTW it was unmodded too but I don't think that counts towards the relability as they are massively overengineered these autoban rockets!)

Are people he considering a group buy if we can get a slight discount? I am still unsure, but Ł30K is better then Ł32+ and it is worth asking.

Oh, yes, and I looked through the pdf price list 6 times last night, no TT mangetic suspension option..... damn, I was hoping that might make it to the S3 this time....

Pricing Ł30k-Ł32k on the new S3 is brave by Audi. Esp considering the depreciation likely. Like stevec says, its not a limited production so you'll easily kiss goodbye to 50% of its value in 3 years. I'd reckon the new RS4 will suffer [from severe depreciation] too because of the mass production. Its especially odd as there are number of very good mass market cars at the same price, BMW for instance with its 335i and 335d could be alternatives - they'd probably have a wider appeal on the 2nd hand market which could make them depreciate less.

I'm also in the same boat as to what to do with the S3. I bought mine new in 2003, and have done 40k. The only problem I've had was squeaky bushes. (I'd not have had the patience like AL_B). I'm considering keeping it as a weekend car and get smthg cheap and fun for commuting, Fabia VRS maybe.

My thoughts are the best S3's will just sit at the Ł8k-10K mark for years to come. Decent examples becoming harder to find, thus will maintain their value. There are numerous specialist to keep the car fit so maintenance costs if not low, are fairly surprise free (ie cost of clutch, cambelt etc). And most surprisingly insurance costs are very low (perhaps S3 drivers write off fewer cars unlike Octavia VRS drivers ).

There again, Audi might repeat history and shaft early purchasers of the S3 like they did with the TT & drop the price by serveral Łk.

    SteveC,

Hi! Wow there are some people on here (and on TS) that go way back... 4.5-7 years. Its great to see people are still knocking around.

Both you and Ed (Silvers3uk) sound like you have been quite lucky with your ownership. The only thing that has plagued my car really, is the hesitation issue. The only thing that ever stopped the car from actually getting me somewhere was a coil-pack back in Feb 03. Only major work performed was 2nd-3rd gear synchro mesh crunch (common problem), then more recently the gearbox hole, caused (I think) by the dealer not putting the gearbox back properly when the synchro was done. So actually, mechanically, the car has been pretty sound.

I'm perhaps a little picky and perhaps overly tuned-in to the car - I spot things almost immediately when something changes performance wise or mechanically.

Ed has a good point about keeping this model of S3. Well maintained examples might hold a decent price.

When I priced up the options for a new S3, basically spec'd to the same level as mine now, with one or two other bits - it came to just under Ł30K. Also priced up a V6 new TT, and that came in at Ł32K.

Now I think the TT is probably the better buy, basically because its a new shape, new car. Where as the new S3, may only be produced for say 3 or 4 years (then a new new shape A3 will be on the cards). They may even facelift it part way through like they did with ours, maybe hike the power up a bit, and worst case, maybe even bring out an RS3. All that will definitaly result in residuals being 50% (or less?) after 3 years.

I think, they should have brought the car out with a higher power output. Lets face it, if it had 300bhp and flaired arches, I think for most folk those would outweigh the quirky front nose and side sills. But at 265bhp its not shocking people into thinking "wow, I want one of those". People have that now in their modified S3's.

    Not on the RS4 :-)

I dunno, it just seems the options to make this car a bit special, ie bucket seats, sprint blue etc really bump up the price..

Perhaps if I didn't already have an A3 then I wouldnt be moaning so much, I just dunno yet if it's going be worth the extra. Is anyone else with an current A3 considering getting a new S3?

Mark88 posted some photoshops in a different thread a while ago.
Here it is in Sprint blue. (I thought it was a little too red so this is my version.)

Metallic paint on the A3 is Ł485, so you just saved enough cash to pay for your windscreen sunband , why is this a paid for option?????

My dealer has spec'd up their demo in solar orange with 19" RS4 style wheels so they are an option.

It will look a little ford asbo I think!

The guy in question at the dealers said he had just got back from Germany on business and has spec'd up their demo S3 as outlined above. He said he had spec'd it like that to stand out because the very very first available allocation of S3's due to UK are already scheduled for build and are basic spec cars in safer colours.

He said the demo and factory spec cars will be due in early November and any car specifically spec'd with less common combo's will not be ready until march unless you are lucky and one with your preferences has already been programmed for production by chance! That will be when they are available to be spec'd up by customers.

BUT: He's a dealer and dealers lie everytime their lips move!

Thanks for the info. My dealer told me that the they will get their demo car in November. Customer cars can be ordered with options for January delivery, no sooner. Although he didn't say when that is likely to happen.

But as you say, he is a dealer.....
